Reyes for MVP?

Jose Reyes has developed into such an offensive force from the top of the Mets' lineup that it's not a reach to suggest he'll earn some MVP votes and perhaps finish in the top 10. Heading into tonight's game, Reyes is batting .297 with 15, triples, 15 home runs, 66 RBI, 53 stolen bases and 102 runs scored. He's got at least one vote -- from manager Willie Randolph.

"I think he could be," Randolph said. "That to me is what a real MVP is. You're crazy valuable when you can do all of those things and play defense. If I'm a manager, I want a guy that can do all of those things."

So what do you think? Will Reyes some day be a legitimate MVP candidate, or is he already?

The guy leads the league in both triples and stolen bases, is close to the lead in both hits and runs, is likely to knock in 75 runs from the leadoff spot, and will approach 20 homers.

On top of that, he's a legit gold glove candidate, with perhaps the best infield arm in the league.

Finally, anyone who watches this team can see that he's the engine that makes them go, and that his energy is infectious whether he's on base or leading high-fives in the dugout.

And he's doing it all for a club that's overcome a number of key injuries to lap the NL.

If he's not top 5 in the MVP voting this year, it's only because Beltran will get a lot of the NY votes, and because home runs get outsized consideration.

Not easy for a leadoff guy to win that award, but in a couple of years - barring injury - he's got a chance to put up numbers like:

.320, 25 HR, 90+ RBI, 80+ SB, 40+ doubles, 20 triples, 140 runs, and a gold glove. None of that is all that far from what he's doing now at 23 yrs old.

And unless Albert Pujols is hitting .340 with 60 HR's for a division winner, that's an MVP season.

Willie,Willie,Willie have you lost your mind. Reyes is not going to be MVP,neither is Beltran or Wright. Mr.Pujols is the NL MVP.Also, the team who will represent the NL in the WS will be the Dodgers.

Boy, MUST BE GETTING VERY BORING TO COME UP WITH NEW STORIES ABOUT THE METS. ALL THE WINNING MAKES FOR BAD PRESS. So....How in the hell can Jose Reyes be the MVP of the league when he is not even the MVP of his team ??!!! He is great but he is firmly BEHIND Carlos Beltran, David Wright and pre-injury Duaner Sanchez.
Anyone who says otherwise is high and hasn't watched the team all year.

Hahahaha! The haters come out in full force when the Mets are on top. I get a good laugh at how other teams fans care so much about the Mets that they come to a Mets Blog to take shots! It speaks volumes and the insecurity cracks me up! lol! That's what happens when you get to the top.

If Reyes' numbers don't give him MVP, then his smile definatley does. That's just as valuable!

Amy , the race for MVP has nothing to do with your hormones. Jose Reyes is an inspiration as a baseball player. But he is not the MVP OF THE LEAGUE or even his team. He compares with Duaner Sanchez as far as team impact goes. Bottom line is Davis Wright carried the team all year, he is my MVP.
And Amy, he is cute too right?

Norton, YOU ARE A P-I-G AND A MORON. Amy has more class and Met spirit than you will ever experience IN ANY SEASON OF YOUR LIFETIME.

Remeber in 88 when both Strawberry and McReynolds put up career numbers and beat each other out of the MVP? Beltran and Reyes should do the same. Both are equally important to the Mets success. Wright is great, but his post-All Star slump puts him out of the running. If the Cards go to the playoffs, then yes Pujols does deserve consideration, but he would have serious competition from Beltran. It's hard to think which player is more valuable to the team Reyes or Beltran, but in a pinch, I would have to pick Beltran. Only because his bat makes the Mets lineup the most fearsome in the NL and except for those wangsters in the Bronx the entire ML. But man, is Reyes spectacular. It's like watching an 11 year old kid play ball. He's just out there having fun.

This is off topic I know but when it comes for a name for the new stadium it makes no sense to have a name of a bank or some other company that constantly has a merger. Some cities have changes as quick as when daylight savings time changes. Pick a name that will stick so fans get used to saying the name in general conversation instead of wondering what the latest name is.

Jose Jose Jose--

If he is not MVP, nobody is.
If I were asked which Met Player I would least want out of the line up in any game, it is Jose Reyes. That defines the MOST VALUABLE PLAYER on a team.

Seems he is climbing the ladder to being a great contact hitter as fast as he wheels home to third for trademark triples. A 30-30 is definitely coming within a season or two-and he will accomplish it several times.

Willie your time has arrived. I have been a Met fan since I can remember. Your team is a royal flush of leaders and thus far, egos have not ruined your mission. That comes from example. Wanting to excel in any field is a compliment to the leadership providing direction, structure, motivation and drive. These men seem to respect you and the composite decision making in the Met system. May it last a long time. Akin to the Devil's farm system, sometimes decisions are made that may take years, months or that one special moment making it all gel and the fans love ya! It has been too long that Mets fans such as myself have had a TEAM. Thank you, them and management.

Mike Visosky is
a poet , a hero.
a mench.
Please know, my fellow bloggers, that I plan on naming all of my family pets...
Visosky. In honor, of the greatest Met ever.
Mike Visosky.
Once again, Mike Visosky.
A legend.

I remember the first time...
the first time I ever saw Mike Visosky. He was running through a cornfield in his bare feet. Fastest man I ever saw, boy could he fly.
You just knew it,
you saw him and you knew it.
It was a good day.
