The best at being the worst

The Miami Dolphins are 0-12 and have a chance to be the first team since the Steve Spurrier-quarterbacked Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1976 to finish an NFL season winless.

Hey, why stop there?

The Dolphins should really go for history and zero in on the NFL’s all-time dubious team record: 26 consecutive losses, also set by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1976-77).

Dating back to last season, Miami is currently on a 15-game losing streak. They could be at 19 by season’s end. And then if they play their cards right in 2008, who knows?

As Rob Schneider might say, “You can do it!”

If the Dolphins succeed (some might consider it failing, but I’m a glass-half-full kind of guy), they would be in company with these other famous losers:

  • The Vancouver Grizzlies and Denver Nuggets hold the NBA’s record for longest losing streak – 23 games.

  • In 1899, the Cleveland Spiders set a Major League Baseball record that still stands today with 24 straight losses.

  • And the Winnipeg Jets went an NHL-record 30 games without a victory in the 1980-81 season.
  • Hey, this might be Cleo Lemon's only chance to etch his place in football history!
