After almost a week of ignoring Republican protests, Democratic leaders stepped into the offshore oil drilling fray.
Top Democrats attacked the Republicans' floor protest as mere antics and criticized the GOP for holding up "real" legislation that would create "long-term" change.
Pelosi (D-Calif): "According to the Bush Administration's own Energy Department, if we repealed the offshore drilling ban today, oil and gas production would not begin there until 2017, and the impact on prices before 2030 would be "insignificant." Why do House Republicans keep calling for an action that they know won't solve today's energy problems?"
Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) put out his own statement, calling drilling a "temporary band-aid," and arguing for "visionary" proposals that allow for nuclear and other sustainable energies.
Even Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) weighed in. On a conference call today, he said that Senate Democrats also helped bring down oil prices by introducing a bill to eliminate some speculation in the oil futures market.

All you republicants want to do is Drill drill drill and Bomb Bomb Bomb! Lovely standards you are setting for your children and their children.

The GOP at that level is scrambling for any possible way to get free publicity as it was recently noted, their coffers are pretty dry this election year.
They are trying anything possible to look like heroes. What do politicians, of both sides, do best? Grandstand!

Let these Dems try and excuse the fact that speculators would react to a bill put thru for drilling and drilling underway. It's time to stop making excuse and trying to find all the reasons not to do the WILL OF THE PEOPLE. We aren't into all the silly bickerings the Dems want to do, stop waisting our time, get off your 5 week vacations and get it done!
Like Paris Hilton said, we need to drill here until we can get some of the long range goals for other alternatives going....they don't have speculators to react to them positively!

They don't have to go on the offense, all they have to do, is to recite all of the fantastic achievements the Bush/Cheney administration hasn't produced !! Such as the increased funding for mass transit system, including reinvigorating our passenger railway system. Stop bailing out mismanaged airlines. Let them pay their own way!! What is this, a socialist country !! Develop acres and acres of windmills, generating energy, acres and acres of solar panels generating energy, developing water generated power. That is just in the field of energy, you know, that field that has been dependent on fossil fuels for the past 250 years, with no new practical applications, in all that time. Doesn't that sound like a snake-oil salesman's pitch? No new practical applications for non-fossil fuels; if you buy that, I have barrels of snake-oil for you to buy. What a con job the Oil and Auto Corps have pulled on America and we go along like zombies, doling out what ever price they wish us to pay. Let me know, America, when you have had enough of this con game and I will join you in any action that will make these parasites go away. For starters, vote for Senator Obama, he isn't in the Oil Corps pockets !!

STP-1 What part of this statement don't you get?:
"According to the Bush Administration's own Energy Department, if we repealed the offshore drilling ban today, oil and gas production would not begin there until 2017, and the impact on prices before 2030 would be "insignificant."
The problem with your idea of pumping now is that gas will remain and go up anyway! So rather than invest in oil again for the next 22 years why not take that investment and push for alternatives????

Why anyone would vote for ANY Democrat for Congress this year is beyond me.
Democrats are totally dissing democracy. Personally, I hate the Democrats and everything they stand for.

San Fran Nan can't be bothered with this silly old energy stuff, she is out there pushing her new book.

And what is it exactly that you stand for Mainer1776? Would you care to explain further?

Well, well. Know that Ronald Reagan in the 1980's trashed President Carter's energy plan that is in use around the world today. Ronald Reagan said that we didn't need an energy plan! McCain must remember that. Intelligence will trump experience anytime anyplace. 167 more days until Obama is sworn in as our 44th president of this great Republic! whiteagle38

They'd better go on the offensive because this is a jugular vein election.
And, if Barack wins, I suggest a consolidation program, a take-no-prisoners, scorched earth policy. Redistricting. Judiciary Act of 2009. Truth Commission. Enlarge the size of the Criminal Division of the Justice Dept.
If you see what I mean.
Sort of like what Sean Connery did to that tarantula Dr. No put in his bedclothes in the first (and arguably best) James Bond film.
You remember what 007 did to the tarantula?
Dems need to take note if they should be so fortunate as to sweep in Nov.
You can alway blame it on your "mandate" to spend your "political capital".

When an animal is cornered and has nowhere to go, it snarls and snaps, mostly out of fear and desperation, rather than a well thought out attack or escape plan.
When a person is backed into a corner in a debate and has nothing in his verbal arsenal to counter an argument, he will often resort to name-calling, generalizations or empty insults to appear righteous.

Bush does not agree with his Energy Dept ! The EIA has said if we expanded supply it would reduce price. You also have speculators reaction to an agreement to drill.

Speaker Pelosi's Aug. 5 letter says it will take until 2017 to get any oil if we start now. WHY WAIT ANY LONGER? We should have started earlier.
She also wrote that the prices went down when a small supply was released from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. WHY NOT RELEASE THE OIL FROM NEW UNDERGROUND WELLS AND FORCE THE PRICE DOWN WITH NEW SUPPLY?
She further wrote that the GOP have not supported "serious, responsible proposals ...[which] would increase supply..." Their proposal to drill would increase supply. That is indeed a serious proposal. WHERE IS THE SPEAKER'S SERIOUS PROPOSAL. ALL SHE DOES IS SAY "NO"!
Speaker, remove your road block. It's costing America.

Scott- Bush does not agree with the Energy Dept's view on drilling. Neither do a lot of people. First the Dems talk about it being 10 years before we will see a difference (forget what speculators will do knowing we ARE DRILLING). Then, Dems pushed it backed to 30 years before we will see a diff. Sorry Bud, but your side is full of BS. Some have already said drilling can start in some areas as soon as 2 years. Here is something for you to read, so you get that they do understand what the impact will be, but they sure don't want to share it with us.

Scot...Don't you find it funny how the republicans supported and still believe everything Bush said and has done in Iraq, yet why in the world do they deny this statement?
"According to the Bush Administration's own Energy Department, if we repealed the offshore drilling ban today, oil and gas production would not begin there until 2017, and the impact on prices before 2030 would be "insignificant."
Someone please answer why you can't understand this report?

Then why does he bother to have an Energy Dept? Can't be that they actually study things related to, say, energy, do they? Unless, of course, Bush filled the dept with horse show judges.

DD-The head of the Dept is a Bush man. The ones hired inside are a lot of Liberal Eniro-Kooks.

And that message is: If you like the bunglings of the Bush/Cheney tag team then you will love the McCain/ Romney, " Questionable Conduct " and all. Mitt, alone, needs at least a barrel of oil a day, to keep his hair in place !! Oh, yes, they certainly will pick-up where the Bush/Cheney team left off, with regards to the Oil Corps. I am sure their profit margins for this year will far surpass last years, 123 BILLION DOLLARS. I'm sure they will know how to take care of the dynamic dual, Bush/Cheney !! Remember, you heard it here, first. Their profits for this year will set new records, in greed !!

So, what's your point? Why have the dept if you're just going to disagree with whatever doesn't fit your agenda?
And since you and Teresa are stuck on just one source, here's some more info to help you branch out a bit...
