Tim Russert was in the midst of one of the biggest stories of his career when he succumbed to a heart attack, at work, at NBC News today.
The presidential election contest between Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama is arguably among the most significant in many decades. It certainly is among the top stories of the era of television journalism, which Russert dominated toward the end of his legendary career.
The best Obama-McCain debate of the year was likely to be that which Russert would have moderated. With his passing, both candidates are paying tribute.
"Always tough... always fair,'' McCain said of Russert.
In this business, it doesn't get any better.

Comments
I'm floored. Russert was that rare breed in Washington, the truly objective journalist who asked the tough questions of everybody. Senator McCain has lost a dear friend as well as the man who would no doubt have been the best debate moderator of this election.

Faux News and Rush must be breathing a collective sigh of relief. One more honest and honorable journalist they don't have to worry about spreading the truth.
Thank you Tim for all you did.

One of the most respected media figures of our time. I truly enjoyed his "To-the-point" questions and comments that are on most of our minds. He always impressed me by getting to the point in a very nutrual tone. He easily and elequently appeared as if he was actually reading and representing the minds of the people; specailly during debates. He will be missed in our home as one of the media personalities hi-lights. We wish to express our condolences to his family

Thanks for that. Tim took McCain's lunch money to a place where it'll be tough for McCain to get it back.

Listen to the difference between Obama's words on the passing of Russert and McCain' words. Obama sounds so insincere and phony. Without the teleprompter Obama is lost.

notice the difference in eye contact between Obama and McCain. Which is speaking from experience and from the heart, which is relying on a prepared speech?

We are sad, so sad for his family especially. My husband and I are middle of the road Republicans, but we always enjoyed watching Tim commentate. He was professional and could always be counted on to give a balanced perspective. Farewell our friend.

Not that I agree with you. At any rate, get used to it, four years is a long time.

If death was a transferable commodity, I would have opted to die for him. The world needs today the masterly scholars like him than anytime before. A rare breed of TV journalist, he was never offensive to the interviewed person even when he was aggressive with nagging questions until they were answered.

Journalism as taken a very tragic blow with the passing of Mr Russert, he was truly a genuine journalist with deep passion for all. His energy and love for journalism will be truly missed. His segments on the air will be trmendously missed.

George - I drew just the opposite conclusion. I thought McCain sounded very rehearsed and insincere while Obama seemed to really be thinking about and feeling what he was saying - I thought he was really speaking from the heart and he truly did seem grief-stricken to me.

Tim Russert was a true American. A genius, a pacifist, a patriot, an icon. In the words of Bob Costas: "A humanist." His way of broadcasting, primarily politics with his unique bipartisan approach is as intriguing as his quarter century legacy of journalism and broadcasting. Tim has left a mark on us all. Both Democrats and Republicans alike embraced this man for the truth he spoke and the country he represented. He is and was a role model for all Americans. One of-if not-the greatest journalists of all time, he is a man all men and journalists yearn to be. He was a great father and we have truly lost a great human and journalist. His death two days short of Father's Day, I pray for his family and friends, and co-workers. Tim Russert is smiling down upon us and is more than likely humbled of so many who care and are in mourning for his death. He will live on and we will learn from this genius. God Bless Tim Russert (1958-2008).

Bad news for human beings! Good news for GW Bush, Dick Cheney, Rush Limbaugh, Don Rumsfeld, and other such monsters in US public life!

You are judging someone off of how they said their words when asked about someone they knew died? Someone died and that is what your worried about. Oh evil Obama. He is going to be a horrible president bc he was lost for words.... He's so insincere wo his telepromter. It's called thinking of the appropriate words to say before you speak them. Phony! Do you know the mans heart! Someone like Tim deserved thought! Lets pay respect to the man. Not nit pick to be petty! I'm not voting for John but I give him the rspect not to judge him on this!

I have watched both repsonses form McCain and Obama and I find them both to be impressive. I have seen several comments regarding the presidential candidates that I see as racist and or polititcally motivated at a time when remorse and reflection is appropriate.

tim russert was a great political reporter. it is too bad he did not speak out like brokaw did against nbc going in a total left wing direction and becoming the press machine for obama.russert was a better reporter than that. he deserved better than to close out his carreer with a network that threw away it's journalistic integrity. tim you will be missed. unfortunately there are no reporters like you left. these amatuer reporters should study tim's life about being fair rather than a propaganda machine for lightweights like obama. our nation will not recover from this because they don't make people like russert any more.

to those of you who are comparing the speeches....you're totally missing the point. In this world, where integrity seems to be slipping through the hole in the ozone, Tim Russert was a man we could all depend on to bring us truth, in a fair, unbiased way. Focus on him and what he did in the world of politics; not how two men delivered their condolences.

First, my thoughts and prayers go out to Tim Russert's family.
Everyone saw the comparison between Obama and McCain in their statements of sympathy for the loss of Tim Russert. It appeared to me that Obama was uncomfortable and insincere. You may call it searching for words to say, but I am more inclined to believe he was searching for the right platitudes. I didn't get the impression that he was so moved by the event of Mr. Russert's death as he was concerned about how he would come off in front of the cameras.
Remember, the eyes are the windows to the soul, and Obama was incapable of looking into the camera or the reporter's eyes.

He looked like a nice guy. Although I never watched his show I did see him get interviewed on the news sometimes. 58 is too young and he should haven taken better care of himself. I think his job was too hard for him- not as smart as Stephanopolous but he meant well. Not that he was left or right rather he had to do too much work to do his job right and that s what did him in. An Ivy League type reporter like the small fellow on CNN would have no problem preparing or doing meet the press Anderson Little would never be overwhelmed by the job. If we learn anything from this is just do what we can handle; don t take a position that is over your intellectual capabilities. At any rate he didn t deserve to leave us so early. Just a nice average guy. We ll miss you Tim.

This is not the time to discuss the expressions of Obama or McCain. Please have respect for Tim Russert's beloved family . Tim Russert's death is a shock to the entire world and a heart breaking loss to his family. Our thoughts and prayers should be with them as we embark upon the celebration of father's this weekend. Please remember that Tim Russert often spoke of his love for his family . His wife, son , father and extended family were often spoken of by Mr. Russert with much endearment. Please do not use this time to discuss politics, pause for a moment and remember a great man , a great gift from God to this world.
