The Hill, a newspaper that covers Congress, has a story today by reporter Jackie Kucinich about Tom DeLay (yes, that Tom DeLay) who has created a blog in order to help Republicans regain the majority.
There are many interesting things about this story. First, the story was written by the daughter of Dennis Kucinich (yes, that Dennis Kucinich,) the way left-of-center Cleveland congressman who just announced today that he is running, once again, for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination.
So here you have the daughter of a very liberal member of Congress interviewing a man who was once one of Congress's most conservative members. And not just any conservative member but the Hammer, the enforcer when he was in the House leadership.
Another remarkable thing about the story is that DeLay told Kucinich that he wanted to replicate the grassroots success of Moveon.org with his new Internet-based strategy.
According to the story:
Sitting forward in an attitude of calm determination, in a conference room adorned with mementos and pictures from his tenure in Congress, DeLay explained how his blog was aimed at improving Internet communication between conservatives. And he acknowledged that Democrats were well ahead in this area.
“I think I’m as responsible for this as anybody. We don’t do communications very well, Republicans/conservatives; one of the real failures amongst many others during the campaign was the lack of communications,” he said.
He hopes the blog will fill a void between Republican politicians and constituents, helping both communication and organization.
Wait a minute. Conservatives have communications problems? That's going to be news to many people.
Conservatives are the ones with the vaunted message machine. After all, they actually redefined the terms in American politics. Remember when liberal wasn't a curse word? What about all the conservative bloggers?
Does DeLay mean communications with the grassroots? That has also been seen as a Republican strength.
It wasn't necessarily that the famed Republican ground game was faulty in the recent mid-term elections. It was more that the pervasive disatisfaction with the Iraq War, as well as frustrations with the Republican Congress, overcame the ground game.
It's doubtful that any communications strategy could have overcome the Republican difficulties this time out with the electorate caused by the Iraq War.
Besides its alleged messaging problem, DeLay blamed campaign-finance reform for Republican losses. That "culture of corruption" thing. Sure, it affected a few races, including his own, DeLay says in the interview, but the damage from that was limited.
It makes for interesting reading, that's certain. DeLay may be many things but he's rarely boring.

Comments
So is this the end of all the conservative claptrap about blogs not being relevant in politics today? Uh huh.
I'm hoping Foley, Rumsfeld, Santorum, Katherine Harris and all the other disgraced losers booted from the Beltway can start their own blogs as well.

Delay has confused the medium with the message.
The problem wasn't that people weren't hearing the Republicans effectively, it was that people weren't buying what they were hearing from the Republicans anymore.
They could have put out the "Stay the Course" message by internet, sky writing or carrier pidgeon, it wouldn't have mattered.

Wow, the extent of DeLay's alternate reality never ceases to amaze. He was on "Hardball" last night and could not understand how we are mired in these politics of personal destruction - never mind that this is essentially what he engaged in for every year Bill Clinton was in office. Now he thinks the GOP's ethics problems are a result of Campaign Finance Reform - his own ruthless and corrupt leadership had nothing to do with it. I guess what's more amazing is that the mainstream media continues to give credence to this crook.

Excuse me, but I beg to differ. Republicans have never said blogs aren't relevant in politricks today. Witness the gigantic pantheon of conservative blogs out there such as redstate.com, littlegreenfootballs, and too many more to list. It was conservative blogs that broke the story about Dan Rather's fraudulent national guard memo stories for CBS, for instance.
What some conservative COMMENTATORS have said is that the net roots aren't as effective as some on the left have claimed because many of the candidates they've backed (previous to the last election) had either failed or would've won anyway. As evidenced by the democratic sweep in November, at least the blogs of the left have either gotten better at picking the right candidates or done a better job politicking for them. Take your pick.
There are rightist net roots, too, though, and it'll be interesting to see how they mobilize their troops for the presidential election two years from now. DeLay is, as the post says, rarely boring, and he's a very effective campaigner. Now that he's doing that full-time it'll be interesting to see how he uses the conservative and moderate netizens of the republican party to help his preferred candidate for the presidency and to help regain the house and break through the slim lead the democrats hold in the senate. The net isn't the singular force in campaigning just yet, but it's growing in power and I think both parties are heavily invested in it as a campaign tool.

While we're talking about "disgraced ex-Congressmen," let's talk about Mel Reynolds, lefties. You folks talk, talk, talk about Mark Foley, but yet Clinton pardons and a child rapist (Mel had sex with minors, Foley DID NOT), gets a job with Jesse Jackson. Or Gerry Studds, who actually did have sex with a male page and was honored by the Democratic party upon his death and re-elected and re-elected and re-elected by your Democratic friends in Massachusetts. Or let's talk about William Jefferson and his $90,000 in the freezer, and your Democratic buddies just re-elected him. There are so many disgraced Democrats out there, let's talk about them.

Terry Shiavo was the start of his downfall right after Abramoff. Wich one of these is on the republican platform? Bigger government in your life or corruption?

Delay's blog site was shut down after 70 minutes yesterday.
I guess to many people wanted to show him the "love" that they have for one of the most corrupt, dispicable former members of Congress.
There should be a law against any Texas Yahoo's holding a highlevel elected,or appointed office in America from now on.
Posted by: John E. | December 12, 2006 1:54 PM
Little Johnny,
Since you're throwing around accusations at the Dems again,I'll tell you that I,for one, want William Jefferson gone, yesterday for that matter.
It shouldn't be to hard for the Democrats to do a better job fighting corrupt politics, than the Wingnut party has done for the last 12 years.
Republicans have set that bar awfully low,i.e. Tom Delay.
Now little Johnny, put down your keyboard, get out your Ann Coulter blowup doll, turn on Faux News, and take a nap, things ARE as bad as they seem for the Wingnut party.
Don't worry Prez Obama is coming soon.

Delay will have plenty of time to ponder his blogging technique at his future home, prison. This, after "bulldog" Waxman exposes all of "the bug killer's" criminal activities over the past few years and they frog-march his sorry ass off to the big house. Oh, and Thomas should have ample opportunity to brush up on his former occupation too, I hear roaches are rampant in the penitentiary.
Posted by: unlettered | December 12, 2006 2:07 PM
John D-
We could also bring up convicted felon Ex-Gov. Ryan, Jack "sex club" Ryan, the entire Iran-Contra crew pardoned by George H. W. Bush...
Are the Democrats pure as the driven snow? Of course not. But neither are the Republicans.
Posted by: Tony | December 12, 2006 2:24 PM
John E. Really? You'd ban Barbara Jordan and LBJ from holding office if they were still alive? What about Ronnie Earl? Under your dictate he'd have to give up his prosecutor's job and Tom DeLay would probably still be in congress.
That would be like me saying all corrupt Illinois machine politicians shouldn't be allowed to hold national office. Retroactive,y, that would've kept good people like U.S. Senator Everett Dirksen (led the fight for Civil Rights) and Peter Fitzgerald (appointed a U.S. Attorney who's nailing dirty Illinois politicians to the wall) out of office.
This is why you can't let reactionaries make policy. Whew! Thank God they're only allowed to post on blogs.
It it interesting to me that Mr. Kucinich's daughter works for Tom DeLay. He obviously was a great parent to have raised such a gifted and politically aware writer ;)

Bill & John D, why lower yourselves to defend a crook like Delay? Why do so many conservatives choose this state of denial? Your party lost in 2006 and you'll lose again in 2008, and politicians like Delay are the problem. You "rightys" just keep on backing the wrong guys and starting the wrong wars. By the way, Clinton is no longer president. Let's focus on the present mess your administration has gotten us into, shall we?
Posted by: Jeremy W. | December 12, 2006 2:28 PM
Yeah, his blog shut down but I read numerous comments on OpEdNews.com. It looks like many people have had their fill of Delay. What a creep!

John D it looks like J Dennis Hastert will go the way of Tom (The Crook) Delay. He is going to resign in March
Posted by: Dale Peters | December 12, 2006 2:48 PM
Tom, it seems, has much to be proud of. His "legacy" is so extensive it's hard to know where to begin. Let me try;
1. Probably the worst case of (and certainly the "timeliest") gerrymandering to date.
2. Most effective scheme for campaign fund laundering yet; utilizing those phony neocon PACS like Norquist's "Americans for Tax Reform", to 'wash that dirty money clean'.
3. That brilliant "K St. Project". The ultimate "pay to play", self-perpetuating, lobbying scheme. This wouldn't be in need of any "reform", would it?
4. Tom redefined pro-active politics. For instance, while some reasoned people were trying to make sense of the voting fiasco in the 2000 election, Tom sprung into action to "assist" by flying his "goons", (paid staffers, republican mercenaries, volunteers) down to Florida to "protest" and disrupt outside the Broward County voting districts.
On the floor of the House Tom had no qualms about setting new lows in voting protocol. How about keeping the House vote over Medicare Drug Reform open for THREE HOURS, while he threatened, cajoled, and bribed members to change their votes?
5. The list goes on and on; the Sciavo debacle, his absurd comments on the stem-cell issue, the abuse of Federal agencies to track down those wascally wayward democwats from Texas, the "family getaways" to Scotland. This guy defines the term CORRUPT.

There's going to be a nonstop frogwalking of corrupt Wingnut party members going to prison in the next few years,Bill.
Sit back and watch the show,it should be a good one.
We can call the show "All My Republicans."

I don't think it was a communication problem that resulted in the Dem. mandate on election day. It was that enough people finally figured out the actual Republic party message and voters bolted.
John e,
You are right. Trail Lawyers are going to suddenly gain in popularity among Republic politicians.

Unlettered,
Your Five DeLay points post is very good.
We need to have a Tom DeLay out there talking and getting quoted and shown on TV if possible. I t will only hurt him and his cause even more.
People have hit the RR Culture War wall and are fed up.
The more cars Ford produces the more money it loses. The Hammer and the Republican establishment are in the same fix; The more they hit their talking points the less popular they become.
Word up, Tom. Tell them what you think they want to hear!
Place elbow on table, make a fist, bash face into own fist, repeat.

Thanks for the tip re. special characters. It's a powerful tool in the fight against RR agit-prop.

The webmaster for this blog states, "Comments are not posted immediately. We review them first in an effort to remove. . .irrlevancies & unfair attacks".
Could have fooled me.
The problem with the rightwingnuts is they like to think in terms of sports events; "Republicans" is the name of "our" team, "Democrats" is the name of "theirs". Anyone on "our" team must be supported. Anyone on "their" team must be reviled & sabotaged. There are only two options: winning and losing. This saves them from actually gathering any facts, forming their own opinions, thinking in terms of cause & effect, working collaboratively, or focusing on how to get the best results for all human beings everywhere.
By thinking "win-lose" Republicans have become doubly pathetic: even lying, cheating and stealing they can't "win". And actually by losing Congress (and soon the Presidency) they've done their constituents a big favor.
Posted by: GDuell | December 12, 2006 11:18 PM
I remember during the Clinton years, the right seemed to only concern itself with everything Clinton. Was so wrapped up in trying to bring him down, no tactic was to low. They even tried to remove a sitting President because he cheated on his wife, and lets not pretend it was about the lie.
The outrage of politicians cheating on spouses is more damaging to right leaning candidates because they are the ones who claim higher morals than those on the left.
Tom Delay was a master of political manipulation for his party, not for his country. It wasn't enough to merely change the rules to ensure his parties hold on power, he even went beyond his own gerrymandering.
About the only thing worse than Texas politics, is Illinois politics. But atleast the Dem's in Illinois haven't decided to redistrict now that Illinois voters have declared it to be a Blue state in two consecutive elections.
Posted by: Thomas C | December 13, 2006 3:25 AM
Yo, Idiot Left Wing Loons, you guys gonna demand the resignation of Rahm Emanuel, who knew for nearly a year about the Mark Foley e-mails? Emanuel knew what Foley was doing but wanted to keep it quiet until October, to impact the election. So Emanuel put politics ahead of doing the right thing. Typical Demoncrap shenanigans.
And Demoncraps should never bring up corruption in Illinois. While we may have Gov. Ryan, you hypocritical loons have Blago, Alexi, Stroger, Bobbie Steele, Daley, and on and on and on and on and on and on. How many Demoncraps are going to jail and will be going to jail?
And, since when is allegedly wanting to have sex with your wife, whether in public or private, a crime? I guess only in the sick world of the Demoncraps.

So the reporter for the Hill is the daughter of a far-left Dem Congressman? She joins the vast club of journalists with Dem political connections, including ABC's "This Week" host George Stephanopoulos (Bill Clinton's press secretary); NBC's Tim Russert (speechwriter for a Dem governor of NY); "Hard Ball's" Chris Mathews (Dem political operative and speechwriter); Cokie Roberts (both parents Dem Congresspeople); NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams (ex intern at Jimmy Carter White House); CBS News anchor Katie Couric (sister a Dem politician in VA).... etc. etc. And these are the "neutral" journalists who decide what we see on the nightly news!

Cheryl,
Brilliant.
My ribs are sore. He can't take the truth. Of course there are many
Stepford Christians that believe he is a wonderful man.
Here's 'Tom's song', same as Abramoff's.
No alterations needed.
Dogs (Pink Floyd)
You gotta be crazy, you gotta have a real need
You gotta sleep on your toes, and when youre on the street
You gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed
And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight
You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking.
And after a while, you can work on points for style
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake
A certain look in the eye, and an easy smile
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to
So that when they turn their backs on you
Youll get the chance to put the knife in.
You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder
You know its going to get harder, and harder, and harder as you get older
And in the end youll pack, fly down south
Hide your head in the sand
Just another sad old man
All alone and dying of cancer.
And when you loose control, youll reap the harvest that youve sown
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone
And its too late to loose the weight you used to need to throw around
So have a good drown, as you go down alone
Dragged down by the stone.
I gotta admit that Im a little bit confused
Sometimes it seems to me as if Im just being used
Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise
If I dont stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this maze?
Deaf, dumb, and blind, you just keep on pretending
That everyones expendable and no-one had a real friend
And it seems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the winner
And you believe at heart, everyones a killer.
Who was born in a house full of pain
Who was trained not to spit in the fan
Who was told what to do by the man
Who was broken by trained personnel
Who was fitted with collar and chain
Who was given a seat in the stand
Who was breaking away from the pack
Who was only a stranger at home
Who was ground down in the end
Who was found dead on the phone
Who was dragged down by the stone.
Tom, enjoy.

"And, since when is allegedly wanting to have sex with your wife, whether in public or private, a crime? I guess only in the sick world of the Demoncraps." - John D
Actually as I remember it John, It was your Republican buddies who dropped Jack Ryan like a hot potato when that stuff came out. They decided "Ambassador to Crazyland" Alan Keyes was a better candidate. The Democrats had nothing to do with it.
Posted by: Tony | December 13, 2006 10:09 AM
Wow Bruce!! It is a conspiracy. You ID'd 7 lefty journalists. What a "vast club". If only we had more than 7 news organizations in this 21st century. Why don't you try to take on the news and facts they report?
Posted by: jethro | December 13, 2006 10:27 AM
Tony, are you really the same guy who thinks Joe Lieberman wasn't forced to run as an independent? Jack Ryan chose to end his campaign. Real republicans (not the Judy Baar Topinka and George Ryan variety) would've still supported him. Unfortunately, his own internals showed that too many family values voters would follow Judy and George down the path to ruin they've led the Illinois republican party to. And to think Judy had the gall to complain about carpetbagger Alan Keyes after she and her committee brought him here.
Anyway, you can't have it both ways. You can't say Joe Lieberman chose to leave the democrats and then say Jack Ryan was forced to step down by the republicans. That's a nice little piece of doublespeak you've got going there.
Posted by: Bill | December 13, 2006 12:22 PM
I never said that Ryan was "forced" to step down. I said it was the Republican leadership that had the problem with his sex scandal, not the Democrats.
Ryan absolutely could have remained, and should have, in my opinion, but he chose not to. I have no more sympathy for him not ending up being the Republican candidate than I do for Leiberman.

What Tom has to tell us...
Well, according to CNN today Delay called Barack Obama a "Marxist Leftist".
So is red baiting the type of message that the Republicans want to communicate? Good luck getting people to take you seriously with that one. It's not 1952 anymore.

And for DeLay to be attacking Obama at this time shows he is s%@#ing his Texas diaper.
