House Speaker-elect Rep. Nancy Pelosi has named Maryland Rep. Chris Van Hollen to be the new Rahm Emanuel, that his the chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
As the head of that committee, Rep. Emanuel of Illinois, received a large share of the credit for the Democrats' success in taking control of the House after 12 years of Republican control.
Not only did Emanuel raise more than $100 million for House candidates but he encouraged a number of strong candidates to run in moderate and downright conservative congressional districts, candidates like former NFL quarterback Heath Schuler who beat a Republican incumbent.
Van Hollen will be up against a tough comparison in terms of Emanuel's successes. It will be difficult for him and House Democrats to hold onto all the seats they gained since some of those seats were picked up in normally Republican districts.
And he won't have the advantages of voter disgust with a Republican Congress over the Iraq War or scandals as Emanuel had.
But he was Emanuel's second-in-command who made appearances for Emanuel when the former DCCC chairman couldn't. So he was a key member of the successful campaign leadership team and is probably the House Democrats best bet for success in 2008.
