The Republican National Committee announced today that more than 1,350 house parties have been scheduled across the nation to watch President Bush deliver his State of the Union Address tomorrow night.
At a party in Bloomington, Ill., an on-line invitation teased: "We will have a Jesse Jackson pinata (and) a dunk tank where you'll get the chance to sink my wife who will be dressed as Hillary Clinton."
The page from the GOP web site was quickly posted on a Democratic Party blog for all to see.
So is the Bloomington party real or a prank?
The parties are planned by local activists, but promoted by the Republican National Committee, so we placed a call to spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt. "It appears to be a hoax from an individual with too much time on their hands," she said, adding that her office would continue to look into the matter to see who was behind it.
It wouldn't be the first time a Bush web site had caused unexpected trouble. Remember during the presidential race in 2004, when the campaign allowed supporters to create their own signs for Bush on the Internet? The program was quickly scuttled after obscene -- and decidedly anti-Bush -- signs were being made on the site.
By late Monday afternoon, Republicans said they had organized 1,375 parties. (Plus or minus the one in Bloomington.....)
“The State of the Union parties are an excellent way for supporters to get to know each other while watching President Bush address the nation,” Republican Party chairman Ken Mehlman said in a statement. “This is an example of yet another successful Republican grassroots effort to galvanize support for President Bush and Republican candidates nationwide.”

the nation is swimming in debt. What are we going to do when China deceides to cash in the worthless paper it holds for something of value. Maybe we could give the the state of Texas for part of the paper.

I suppose that we're going to hear about the imminent nuclear threat from Iran. But this Bush boy has cried WOLF too many times for anyone to take him seriously.
He squandered any benefit of the doubt by fabricating WMD evidence against Iraq. Are we supposed to believe him now?

maybe ken mehlman will use one of those parties as a "coming out" party, who knows?

So why is this GOP house party front page newsworthy????...I'm sure I could go online and find hundreds of examples of similar Bush bashing parties. Once again the Tribune shows its true colors.

I'm just too fed-up with listening to Bush talking out the side of his face, and smerking out the other side, that I don't have plans to even hear him lie again to the American public. I think I'll catch-up on some reading, like the U.S. Constitution, while we still have one.

Bush scares me, and the reason he scares me, is because scores of rich white people across this country believe in him and act upon his foolishness. How do I know? Look at FOX news, look at his campaign chest, look at his friends running Big Oil, Big Energy, the Military Industrial Complexx and the Big Prison Industrial Complex. Bush couldn't manage a Dairy Queen on his own, probably would fail an SAT test, yet seemingly otherwise intelligent people (again, mostly caucasians), who ostensibly wouldn't let Bush date their daughters, somehow think he is competent and really capable of running this country without Rove, Cheney, Wolfowitz and his father. I guess I don't know which is scarier then, the fools who vote for him, or him.

Wifey-cakes should dress up like Ann Coulter. She'd have plenty of people lined up to dunk her. Hell, they might even hold her under for a while...

Todd asks why a GOP party featuring a Jesse Jackson pinata is a big deal, and thereby demonstrates so much that is wrong with the GOP. It never even OCCURS to them that hanging an effigy of a black man and beating him could be mis-perceived.

I am a Republican but will not be attending a party, because I loathe biased Republicans as much as I loathe biased Democrats.
Objectivity is lost. The system is broken.

For all of you who are whining about Bush, Roberts, Alito, Iraq, etc....Bush won. Get over it!
Posted by: Bob Skilnik | January 31, 2006 10:57 AM
Hey Todd, it's newsworthy because the republican party in Bloomingdale doesn't see the problem with the imagery of stringing up a caricature of a black civil rights leader and beating it. If you can find something *equally shameful* about the democrats at that level, please share it with the rest of us. I would love to read it.

So, a hoax is "news" to you?
Posted by: Steve Barton | January 31, 2006 11:35 AM
Poster Todd is right. Why is the GOP house party getting the Tribune treatment? Go over to the Democratic Underground website or the Daily Kos where John Kerry likes to post and you'll see calls for revenge, fighting in the streets, leaving the country, etc.
The threats got so bad yesterday after some Dems voted for cloture that both sites shut down visitors from viewing their sites. Apparently they didn't want to raise the ire of authorities or let outsiders watch as they ate their own. That's where the political loons are, not in some Chicago suburb.

Yes, we should all watch the State of the Union address tonight and remember it well when we go to the polls this year and in the next Presidential election. Only we the voters can set right what has gone wrong. Remember: record national debt, thousands dead from a war that was not in our interests, and an economy in turmoil as its workers pay the price for poor executive political leadership.

KissieMcPhooPhoo--
Ok, how about an over-the-hill alchoholic Kennedy ranting and raving about the integrity of Judge Sam Alito, when he STILL hasn't copped to the fact that he could drive a busload of nuns into a river and get away with it, simply because his name is Kennedy...and by the way, calling Jesse Jackson a "civil rights" leader just because he shows up at a twice-convicted murderer's pep-rally for the face time is like calling Ariana Huffington an unbiased news reporter.
And how about having the guts to use your REAL name...?!?
Posted by: Fred DeLisio | January 31, 2006 12:21 PM
I believe that Mr. Skilnik is talking of what he knows not. DKos was not shut down to visitors yesterday. Furthermore, if he isn't aware of WHY the idea of hanging an effigy of a black person as a pinata is offensive regardless of what party one belongs to, he is showing a serious bias towards racism. This country is more divided than it has been in decades, and his type of rhetoric is a large part of the problem.
Posted by: Heidi | January 31, 2006 12:23 PM
I t should not matter if you like or dislike the president because it is our duty as American citizens to listen.
If you are pro Bush you will enjoy his remarks I’m sure.
If you don't like Bush then remember you cannot win the debate unless you understand your opponents view.

Bill,
Elections won't mean a thing if we don't straighten out what's going on with the electronic voting machines. You think I'm kidding? Click on this link to read some stories you probably haven't seen in the Trib...

Hey, The Democrats are holing a party out side the fence near the White House, they will be beating pots and pans with there Hero Cindy Chehan.
Posted by: cliff zeider | January 31, 2006 12:38 PM
Bloomington is not a Chicago suburb. If you've ever been downstate, you might be surprised at some of the racist comments from the GOB (good old boys)party. There's your President's base.
Posted by: AJP | January 31, 2006 12:53 PM
This is obviously a prank. "The Bistro" as listed in the address of the party is no longer a restaurant but an alternative lifestyle bar.
Posted by: Redbird77 | January 31, 2006 1:34 PM
Todd thinks the Tribune is showing its true colors, huh? He mustn't be aware of the fact that they have NEVER endorsed a Democrat for President and are and have always been known as the conservative paper in town.
And Bob apparently believes that because Bush won no one can say anything more about him. Because he sat silent for 8 years of Bill Clinton, I'm sure.
He's done a terrible job as president, I think anyone without bias can see that.

Just reading these posts illustrates to me that the terrorists have won. Not by creating an Islamic state but by dividing our nation into extremism from both spectrums of the political party. It seems like the catharsis to 9/11 is either be a hamfisted bullying right wing Christian Taliban blowhard or a shrill, knee jerk reactionary, no common sense left wing elitist bleedingheart. I think people--real Americans--are getting fed up with acrimony, the shout-down policices of pundits and the overwhelming sense of nonaccomplishment since 9/11. And why are things NOT getting done? Because everyone's too busy braying they're right instead of doing something that's right ...

Why doesnt President Bush do all of us a favor and talk about the importance of national security, and protecting American jobs, by discussing illegal immigration. That should be #1 on his list.
HEAR ME PRESIDENT BUSH, AMERICANS WANT TO KNOW WHY YOU ARE THROWING AMERICA AWAY!

I'm thinking Bob Skilnik might have gotten confused because a previous commentor mistook Bloomingdale (a Chicago suburb) for Bloomington (GO TITANS!!!) and he might have misunderstood which comment he should have referenced.
Then again, Bob doesn't seem to have much going in the understanding department anyway. Yes, Bush did win. As for getting over it? Well, I think our whole country's in for a good 20 years of rebuilding before we "get over it."

I love how you Dems go for the personal attacks on this forum. BTW, Bush and Karl Rove are already planning the next SCJ pick.
Maybe then we can stop the killing of more than 1 million babies per year. That's not politics, that's humanity.

Lets run down what Bush should discuss tonight:
1) Record runaway deficits, thanks to tax cut for the richest 1%, hey, hopefully he'll thank China, since they finance most of the debt, at, oh let's say, 4%. Now pay attention, that means as the gov't refunds money back to multi-billionaire oil barrons, the Chinese gov't loans us the money, which the poor and middle class largely pay back!
2) Lies by the neo-cons to start this illegal invasion and pre-emtive war. No WMDs will ever be found, no labs, no smoking guns, no underground stockpiles, no link to 911 will ever be found, no link to Osama Bin Laden will ever be found. All lies, so Exxon and Halliburton, among others, can enjoy $30 billion dollar profits.
3) Hey, maybe he'll announce that the D.C. anthrax terrorist has been found..lets keep our ears peeled for that one.
4) Hmm, 2000 dead soldiers, over 20,000 maimed, crippled, injured, poor soldiers to come home...oh yeah, he cut combat pay, cut veteran's benefits twice, and cut the extension for unemployment, I'm sure he'll lay out his vision for the soldiers too.
5) Delay, Abramoff, Scooter Libby, Ken Lay (best bud)...His ethics reform package surely, surely will lead off this evening of vision. Oh, how much oil stock does Cheney, Rice and the Bush Clan (no pun intended) hold again?
6) Surely, he'll announce we've captured Mullah Omar. He's probably on his way to Guantanamo Bay as I write this...where he'll be whisked away to Poland on an illegal rendition to have the crap beat out of him and forced to eat pork.
7) He's got to mention the cuts in the Pell Grants and the raise in student loan interest rates for poor and middle class students who desperately need them to compete in this cruel business environment. Oh, the money's gone for the sake of the tax cut to billionaires, I've heard he's got great news about that for 2006.
We could go on and on, but why, we're doomed as long as this idiot occupies the white house.

I will do my civic duty and watch tonight's dog and pony show from the Capitol of a once proud nation but my thoughts will be of another President's speech 45 years ago. All of Ike's fears about the effects of the military-industrial complex have been realized through actions by administrations of both parties, resulting in a military budget exceeding the combined budgets of all other nations and we now have a two term administration trying to save its Congressional Control by convincing the gullible electorate to vote for their selfdeclared "Global War on Terror". Ike is surely spinning in his grave. WAR is NOT the ANSWER!

Let them have their stupid parties. I like them comfortable enough to show their true colors. We already know that Bush is a lying trash talker - anyone that follows him is either just as bad or twice as stupid.

Secret meetings between oil executives & Bush & Chenney & now oil companies are making record profits. Hasterdt says companies shouldn't be punished for being successful, but haven't American citizens been punished by gas bills?
Haven't Americans figured out Republicans are for the interests of big companies over voter's/citizens? Ownership society might as well say you're on your own.
I'd like to see the day when a lobbyist for the poor/handicapped/retirees/human rights/ be tried & convicted for breaking the law.

I have the solution put a end to right and wrong.
We need to combine our efforts, thoughts and ideas instead of insisting the way one party does things is right and final.
People grow with change. America must change its ways of shutting others out who do not agree with them.
I love democracy but one side wins the other side loses is old pratices.
We the people need to demand that we want to have all ideas, efforts, support possible and by shutting out the idea of a party because you lost by 1,000 or so is votes or because they veiw issues different or have an another way to approach ideas.
Some one please help us.
GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!!!

Our country is challenged, at home and abroad:
that is our will is being tried, our strength; our sense of purpose, our ability to achieve a better America;
Do we have the strength to meet our every challenge; the physical strength to hold the course of decency and compassion at home; and the moral strength to support the cause of peace in the world?.....NOT Under the leadearship of a George W. Bush.

I would have to say the country was most divided under the Clinton's rule as king. I did not agree with him, just because the Media did does it mean it was not divided?

Channel 7 news just had a Republican elected official, (could not catch the name)on and I quote " if you like what is happening to this nation you must vote Republican in the November elections, if you don't like what is happening you must vote Democratic". I cannot tell you how to vote, but I can ask you to use your hearts and your minds when you vote, "do you like where this country is going, and is your son or daughter at risk in a foreign war we cannot win?" "Are you better off in your job today than two years ago, or four years ago, or eight years ago?". You must answer these questions for yourself when you vote and vote you must.

How about the fact that one of the Democrats primary members (Sen. Robert Byrd from W. Va) WAS A MEMBER OF THE KKK!!!
Oh and a little thing about the Democratic Party being the main advocate of slavery during that thing in the nineteenth century...yeah, the Civil War, I think?

Here's a typical rant from a loon at the Democratic Underground website:
Serious question here;
At what point do we rebel against the removal of the Democratic elements of our government?
At what point does sending faxes and hoisting signs become futile?
At what point do we become a nation of Refuseniks, and begin the destruction of the Republican Dictatorship by;
• Quitting,
• Striking,
• Calling out sick,
• Slowing down,
• Misfiling,
• Freecycling,
• Boycotting,
• Refusing to spend money.
• Refusing to watch television,
• And generally being individual obstructions to the smooth running of the fascist state?
Folks, we have to HURT them.
Our opposition is the monied class.
We are the working class.
They cannot exist without our cooperation.
DESTROY THEM.

Why don't you cover this and not what is an obvious prank?

Todd is absolutely right that the Tribune is showing it's true colors. Just because the Tribune has never endorsed a democratic candidate doesn't mean your stories are fair and balanced. And what's wrong with having a little fun down in Bloomington? Pinatas have been around for centuries, but now that you can attack the GOP with one, it's off limits?

It shows what a sad state the national democratic party is in, when its supporters still cling to the idea that a nationally discredited has been like Jesse Jackson-who will show up anywhere for attention, up to and including marching to support clemency for the founder of the Crips street gang-is somehow still considered a civil rights "leader."
How sad.
