Down to earth and up really early
Words may have spoken louder than actions this time. After spending more than two hours following wheelchair-bound Michael Harris through the subway system Friday, Transit President Howard Roberts was called “incredible” for willingness to see how frustrating the subway system can be for disabled riders. But one three-minute gesture on Roberts’ part may have earned him more respect than the two-hour tour. Harris, Disabled Riders Coalition founder, fired off a thank you e-mail after the trip and hit the send button at midnight, but because of an e-mail service glitch, the message landed in Roberts’ inbox at 3:57 a.m. Roberts, an early riser, responded at 4 a.m. “He just seems so down to earth. He gets it. He gets these issues. He gets the problem and he’s actively looking for solutions,” Harris said.
