Amtrak customers stood in long lines at Penn Station and other hubs this weekend after computer problems forced the rail system’s employees to write tickets by hand. The technical glitch in Amtrak’s reservation system meant customers could not book tickets on line, over the phone or at station kiosks starting Saturday morning. Amtrak identified a software problem Saturday night and began installing new equipment, which got the Arrow reservation system completely up and running by 1 p.m. Sunday. “This did not in anyway affect train operations,” said Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham.

The Sixth Borough in one hour flat

old map.jpg

Many places have facetiously been called the sixth borough over the years, spots as far flung as Miami. But according to the New York Sun, Philadelphia could stake a realistic claim to that status if nonstop, high-speed Acela service between Manhattan and the City of Brotherly Love becomes reality.

Such a trip would take about an hour, and if it delivers large numbers of New Yorkers to Philadelphia, could push apartment prices up in Philly. Price per square foot in Philly has a hard time busting above $400, a breathtaking bargain compared to NYC’s average $1,000 and above, the article explains. One could expect a real-estate boom, especially in buildings near 30th Street Station, and nearby across the Schuylkill River, and the revival of a high-end Richard Meier tower, a plan abandoned because it simply didn’t draw the deep-pocketed NYC clientele it had been meant to attract.

OK, here’s the inevitable reality check. Acela, and for that matter plain vanilla Amtrak service is incredibly expensive. To wit, one way on Acela right now is $129. Actual pricing for the non-stop route has not been revealed. Folks who can afford that twice a day probably don’t need to look in Philly for real estate deals.

Robert Yaro of the Regional Plan Association sums up one of the frustrating problems of American transit nicely:

"Every other industrialized country has a high-speed rail system, creating synergy between cities and increasing the size of the marketplace to benefit both cities. We're so far behind, it's ridiculous."

And the bad transit news in the Bush budget

Dubya's budget cuts $493 million from Amtrak's operating funds. That's a 38% reduction and it is "jeopardizing Amtrak's ability to serve it's Northeastern passenger lines," according to an analysis by Hillary Clinton's staff.

Blame Amtrak if you were late today -- again

Keeping track 6/22/06

Moynihan moves: The Related Companies and Vornado Realty sign “timetable” agreement on work to convert the Farley Post Office into Moynihan Station, a new transit hub, that will hark back to the original Penn Station. But big questions still remain over the controversial proposal to move Madison Square Garden into the rear of the Farley  building. [amNY]

Bring it on: MTA board member Barry Feinstein says he’s got no problem with transit workers protesting outside his home over the contract impasse. “It’s certainly fair,” he said. [amNY]

Amtrak problems redux: Amtrak loses power on tracks in North Jersey giving commuters on NJ Transit a big headache. Government  watchdog warned of problems long ago. [AP via amNY]

Subway accident: Motorman on L train driving train in the Canarsie train yard apparently had a seizure and crashed the train. Three workers were injured. There were no riders on the train at the time and service wasn’t affected.  [WNBC]

MetroCards for summer school: If the school bus drivers union strikes this summer thousands of summer school kids will get free MetroCards courtesy of the Department of Education. Their contract expires June 30 but summer school doesn’t start until July 5. The tracker thinks there won’t be a strike. [Daily News]

Get off the train Kalikow: Daily News editorial board slams Gov. Pataki for appointing MTA Chairman Peter Kalikow to another 6-year term. They say the new governor should pick his chairman. “We hope Kalikow, after ably helping to run the subways for 12 years, knows when it’s polite to give up his seat,” the editorial concludes. [Daily News]

What a mensch: Kalikow donates $3.5 million to Hofstra University, his alma mater, to create a center to study the American presidency. Anyone think Kalikow’s political patron will ever be studied? [Newsday]

If you are in Penn Station ...

...  you may as well check out the Amtrak Community Security & Emergency Preparedness Expo from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on June 22.

Blame Amtrak if you were late today

As of 10 a.m., New Jersey Transit is still experiencing 15 minute delays coming into New York Penn Station due to yet another power outage on Amtrak’s rails. NJ Transit used Amtrak's rail roads.

Service was completely cut down 8:05 a.m. to 8:33 a.m. from a “power fluctuation.” There was enough juice to keep the electricity and air conditioners flowing.

The cause of the fluctuation is under investigation.

UPDATE: As of 10:40 a.m. "NJ TRANSIT trains are now operating on or close to schedule in both directions following earlier Amtrak power problem."

Of course, everyone remembers, the power outage on Amtrak last May 25 that left thousands of commuters stranded. The cause of that outage is still unknown.

Privatization

So, how soon are we going to get the first renewed call to privatize Amtrak?
