East Side Trouble

The Lexington Avenue line is even more backed up than usual during the evening rush this Thursday. A forklift accident at the Westchester Rail Yard damaged third rail cables and made it impossible for NYC Transit to get the usual number of 6 trains into service during rush hour.

The line, which is already over capacity, went into rush hour with the same number of 6 trains it runs at midday when the wait is about 8 to 10 minutes. Everything slowed as crowds packed trains, held doors, and sent frustrated riders to the 4 and 5, crowding those trains more than usual.

"We're working to restore service," said Deirdre Parker, a transit spokeswoman. "We're hoping that we'll have it back to normal by 6 o'clock."
