Greening the subways

As part of the eco-friendly initiatives announced today, the MTA is issuing green Metrocards. The 5 million cards, however, are not biodegradable and will likely outlast the subway system. An MTA official said he saw the irony but until renewable technologies catch up with disposable swipe cards, there's not much they can do.

Are the "green metrocards" being sold yet? If so, where? I tried two subway stations and neither one knew what I was talking about.
