In fighting subway floods, the MTA is looking to change the Transit landscape.
In the Transit improvements the MTA rolled out today, the agency promised to raise sidewalk gratings to block water from entering the subways. The grating will also double as benches.
The MTA often notes the inundated city sewer system can't take floods of storm water during the worst deluges. So they've decided to try and keep it from getting there in the first place.
The agency also plans to use its recently announced green initiative to fight off flooding. The agency is looking to plant rooftop gardens or tree pits on some of its properties.
The MTA may also use porous pavement in parking lots to suck up water before it heads to storm drains. All of the improvements may prove the most necessary in the future, as an MTA commissioned climate report notes transit-crushing storms may become more frequent.
