The cops put some of the K-9 units on display today. These pooches are 100% devoted to the subways.
"You have to make sure no one steps on his tail,“ says Police Officer David Machin about his partner Cyrus. Folks are startled to see Cyrus patrolling the trains. "They think something happened. Is there a bomb on board?"
And while the dogs got a little antsy by all the photogs today -- they barked nonstop -- on the whole they are behaved in the subway. Machin says the pooch hasn't has a poop accident yet. More important, Cyrus is adjusting to the rhythms of the subway.
“It took some time but he’s used to it. He’s more relaxed," he said.
There are four transit K-9's on patrol now with another three to start December and 27 by the end of the year.
The last K-9 team dedicated to the subway was disbanded in the 1980s.
