They wouldn't be the first

It looks like the Straphangers Campaign, like some other transit advocates and the perhaps the transit union as well, has given up on the Gov. Pataki’s stewardship of the MTA.

From their statement on the Hevesi report today:

“The Straphangers Campaign urges that these issues of fares and rebuilding needs be left to the new governor, who comes into office in January, 2007. Riders have long been saddled with an unfair burden of the costs of repairing our transit network. Any solution to the long-term operating and financial needs of our subways, buses and commuter lines should be resolved by the new governor grappling with a long-term solution.”

That feel is probably shared by the people who hung on Eliot Spitzer’s every word at the Regional Plan Association last week.

Or maybe it's just fair to let a new governor with a full-term ahead of him -- and probably wanting to be re-elected as well -- to handle transit issues that affects millions of New Yorkers.

It will be left to Spitzer to kill the LIRR-Downtown link, and fund the giant, but critical, ESA, #7 extension and 2nd Ave. Subway. But will he reform the authority and what will be the character of that reform? Jury is out.
