Hot trail on missing Lab in Queens

Team Vivi may have suspended its formal search for the missing Westminster whippet, but it often springs into action when other animals go missing.

Consider Lexi, a female yellow Labrador Retriever who went missing on Thanksgiving Day at Springfield Blvd & 77th Avenue in Bayside, Queens -- an area very familiar to Vivi searchers. She was wearing a collar with tags and a matching leash when she got spooked and ran.

Lexi was sighted at about 5 a.m. the following Saturday morning in the same area.

Bonnie Folz just forwarded this email from Lexi's owner to us:

<>

Feels like old times -- Rosa is on the way to search.

Any info, please call Laura at 516-770-0659 or 516-804-0079.

Any news on the availabilty of the toll booth tapes for the day and time that D had spotted the Vivi-like dog? I know we are all extremely anxious to know if the dog was Vivi or not.

Have there been any more sightings of Lexi? She has been out a week now....

Mila,

I think it's safe to say we will never know if it was ViVi that D saw on the toll bridge. I've asked for a follow up but like always I never get a answer back. So sad.

It is sad, Marty. Vivi is the reason we came together and without a resolution, the void left will never stop for anyone, especially her family.
Last week, I read about a missing dog who was found after 2 1/2 years due to the micro chip. Miracles happen and we need Vivi's to come soon.

Posted by Irene | November 30, 2007 09:49 Mila, totally agree with your post concerning NO info on results of being able to view the tape for the morning of September 25th, when "D" had the sighting of a dog that could be our Vivi.

What could POSSIBLY take so long if follow-up calls are made to the bridge personnel? It is heartbreaking to think that this opportunity might pass, like many others, because I feel that if more time goes by, the toll takers will say they can't go back that far and look at tapes months old. They only need to look at about an hour of tape....what's the big deal here????

This sighting was on the morning of September 25th....more than 2 months ago. PLEASE, we are asking Honi, and whoever else has access to these people, to speak to these people and get a conclusion here.

Please pray for Vivi's safety and recovery.

Snow is forecast for our area this coming weekend and it totally destroys me to think this poor little dog could still be out there fending for herself and trying to survive. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, ACT NOW AND MAKE THE NECESSARY CALLS!

Yes, it's very sad and just heart breaking to think of even the possibility she is still out there on her own for almost two years. Since the search seems to have stopped for Vivi, I was wondering if the hot line is still up and working for people to call in sightings?
I feel such a good opportunity was lost not following up on the toll booth sighting. I hope if she's still out there she's able to stay safe and a miracle will happen for her. That kind stranger we've all been waiting for.

Sorry, that last post was from me. I forgot to sign in

Kathleen,

You can post

"There ARE no secrets being withheld from anyone about the search for Vivi. My cell phone number is everywhere, as well as Honi’s number. If anyone has any questions, they are welcome to call me or Honi direct.

If nothing is happening, nothing is happening! If someone wants to step up and get something going, this would be fine. Trying to get the media involved in doing anything about Vivi is like pulling teeth. I’ve been told by more than one editor, unless Vivi is found, there is no story. We may have a chance come Westminster time, but it probably will be a short blurb they do, and that’s it.

Numerous calls have been made to “D” on a weekly basis, to have her look at the line-up cards, and she never answers her phone OR returns anyone’s call. Not much can be done about that. (MY NOTE: D if you are out there, please return these calls and check out the line-up cards to help us know if this really was our precious Vivi.)

Calls have also been made to the toll booth personnel about the video. We are told, if they see any dogs, they will contact us. We cannot MAKE them look at the video!

A faxing, emailing, snail-mailing, flier blitz was done immediately to the neighborhoods surrounding the toll booths and volunteers were at the site and around the area after we got the info from “D.” We have not received ONE response/call on the flier blitz. It is always possible this was not Vivi that “D” saw.

I got a call, from one of my students on November 11th, telling me she was in the left lane on the Belt Pkwy just by the Van Wyck Expwy, and cars were slowed down almost to a stop. She saw cars pulled off on the right shoulder and thought it was an accident. As she drove past, she glanced over and noticed a couple of people trying to catch a white dog with brown spots and thought it might be Vivi.

I was in NJ doing a transport of 4 rescued Rhodesian Ridgebacks at the time, and immediately called Honi & Carol since they live closest, and then called Rosa. Carol and Rosa were at the location within a half hour and there was nothing there. No cars pulled over, no dogs running around. They both cruised the area and surrounding neighborhoods for about an hour searching, but saw nothing.

I sent the line-up card to my friend and she said the dog she saw was NOT on the line-up card and that the spots she saw on the dog were closer to its tail. Apparently it was NOT Vivi that she saw.

I received an email recently, about a Lurcher who was reunited with its owner, after 8 years being lost, through its microchip!

To think Vivi has gone out of anyone’s mind here in NY is crazy!!!!"

As you can see by Bonnie's response to me for an update, Bonnie is very straight-forward and very helpful to anyone who just e-mails her or calls to ask about the search. I can tell she and the others in NY are just as sad about the lack of sightings or information as we all are.

If you have questions, just ask Bonnie or Honi. I know they will give you very straight answers - they have always done so with me. I just asked .... and you can too.

Still Keeping the Faith in Memphis just like Marnie is Keeping the Faith in California! When the time is right, I have no doubt God will either bring Vivi back home or give us all the comfort and strength to accept we may never know where Vivi is, but we do know how much good she brought for many other animals (and people too)!

Regardless, I will never forget the day I heard the story of this little lost dog in NY on the News and immediately found her story tugging at my heartstrings - and always will do so! I just have to trust in my God to take care of her when I cannot do so.

Kathleen, thank you for posting Bonnie's reply to you regarding the toll tapes and D.

It sounds like the "authorities" do not want to give up the tapes for viewing or want to take a look themselves. That is very lazy and/or irresponsible on their part. One would think they would jump at the chance to validate that Vivi is still alive. Vivi's press in NYC has been immense - too bad some press asking or demanding a review of the tapes could not be generated by some publication. A little negative or embarrasing publicity against them might go a long way.

As for D? Her non response to the many requests for a line-up verification makes me very suspicious that she is a crack pot just looking for attention. D? If you are reading this please prove me wrong and make the call. Your post in September raised the hopes of so many and then you just went away.

You are welcome Mila. I also feel like you. If would be good if we could verify this sighting with "D," if she is not some crackpot wanting attention (which is what I am assuming with her lack of returning calls or answering the phone). Then we could have something to try and sell to the media for an update, and also get the pressure from the press to move those people and ask for those tapes to be viewed.

Also, I would like to see Jill and Rick contact these people and ask for their help (this "D" and the toll-booth authorities). Often the owner can have much more pressure than other individuals.

If anyone speaks with Jill or Rick by phone or e-mail, maybe this should be suggested and see if they might want to follow-up with this. The ladies in NY are definitely coming to a dead-end trying to get these answers it sounds like.

Kathleen, I was thinking the same things. Jill and Rick might have more pull with the powers that be. I also was thinking about any higher ups from Westminster and if there could be some new ideas that could be used.
I hope D is genuine. Maybe it's just wishful thinking.

If the bridge peronnel won't review the tapes, then it is nice to know that rather than sitting here wondering what's going on!
I agree that maybe Jill and Rick would have more pull if they would ask if the tapes could be reviewed? Has this been done?
Just wondering.

There are different ways to handle this and to interpret how this sighting has been handled. I'd like to see the name and phone number of the toll people who have been spoken to turned over to Jackie to see if she can get different results. What is there to lose?

Kathleen thanks for the update. Even that helps and gives a little food for thought with people wondering what is going on. Now we at least know the toll booth people and the D person who claimed to have seen her are not being responsive. I feel also this could be a prank since that person suddenly showed up on the blog, caused a furor, and then refuses to come back on or return volunteer's phone calls. But it would at least be helpful if the toll booth authorities would allow someone to view tapes of around that time. Perhaps this dog if there was one had been around for a little bit of time.
Perhaps she is not still running loose and is safe somewhere. Which frankly would be the better scenario as her health and well being would almost have to be deteriorated if she has been loose all this time. She would almost have to have encountered some injuries, infections, what about heartworm and parasites and everything else. Hate to be negative but this is not the wilderness she escaped into.

I went back and read some of the early stuff on the interet of accounts from owners and Bo and such of how she was nearly captured within hours of her escape and that people had her cornered and were within a few feet of her but were not able to, or did not know how to calm her and she turned and got thru a hole in the fence into the marshes. Some stuff about the very early search at the airport which I had not really read before. So sad that for being within those few feet of her in the first few hours of trying to recover her, she has been gone for nearly two years.

I just hope she lives on whether someone has her or not and is healthy until and if we will one day see her again and have some idea of what has happened to her in all this time.

I dont think anyone should rush to judge "D". It was enough to make Honi take a boat ride and look for Vivi, that says alot!!

I hope she still reads this blog and would feel comfortable to share her side of the story. SHE did seem to go out of her way to look for the blog and atleast report of this possible sighting, and then called in the sighting after she was informed of the 800#, I give her alot of credit for that.
Vivi needs all the help in the world!
Viva La Vivi!

Yes. D was deemed quite credible. Different people have different levels of commitment to this and she should be commended for calling, for remembering, for searching until she found a website dedicated to finding Vivi and reporting what she saw, then when told how to call Rosa calling and telling her about what she saw. Her name is known, it was in a logical place. She reported a hole in the fence. There was a hole in the fence. etc.

Jackie called the radio station in Georgia every day at the same time until Ticket was found. Sometimes it takes annoying persistence to move people who don't care. I say let Jackie call them and if they can produce a picture of Vivi taken with those cameras on that day we will give them money, $300 would not be too much for that.

We need to remember that there are many people who read this blog but NEVER post. IF we bash "D" without knowing the details, it wont be a comfortable place for anyone else who would want to post about a sighting, it will only discourage them from sharing any possible info to help Vivi. If anything we need to welcome anyone knew who would want to help in some way, it could be someone who reads the blog that lives near this area that might want to help out. Maybe it would help reunite new people willing to post or search.

Like I said Vivi needs all the help in the WORLD so instead of driving new peope AWAY who might be aware of her lets try and make them feel welcome, the more info posted the BETTER that it might reach the right person who might cross paths with VIVI!.

I hope people will feel welcome to post on here. All we want is to find Vivi and if someone thinks they saw her, thank goodness people remember her and want to help with the search. If Jackie can call them and persuade them to check the pictures, that is great. She was successful with Ticket's search.
Like I said before, I had hoped D was genuine. She sounded it and from what you said, Karen, she mentioned details that were there. This is an area that wasn't really posted until then, so it made sense to me that Vivi could be there.
Hannukah is this week and a certain whippet being found and reunited with her family would be the ultimate holiday gift for me.

SUSAN - Of all the people I have met on this blog, you have always impressed me with your kindness and concern. Dear lady, I am hoping and praying you get your Hannukah "ultimate holiday gift" this week.

Thanks for always being so kind to me. It is very appreciated.

Susan you are a very sweet person to all on this blog.
Kathleen it is easy being nice to you as you are such a nice person.

We would all love to have the ultimate holiday gift. We have a very great gift in all the friends we have made on this blog and all the others that have been helped because of this friendship. May there be many more.

Kathleen, Kay and all of you on this blog. You have touched my life in ways I have never dreamed. I cherish our friendship. To help our furry friends has been such a gift for me and I see it in my 13 year old daughter who volunteers at a Theraputic riding center every Sat. She also has done Rottie rescue and of course helped Jane at Montville. I sometimes think she could be an animal whisperer.
The ultimate gift hit home yesterday with me when I volunteered with some ladies at an interfaith soup kitchen. It was our synagogue's Sunday to help. When I heard a youngish man tell us that it was very cold out Sat. night and we realized he probably slept outside, it brought home how many humans, animals are hungry, alone, and need help.
I could do without gifts. Just let our lost babies be found and our sick furry bundles get well. And may everyone have enough to eat and a place to live.

Amen Susan

SUSAN: I agree with Kathleen. You are one of the nicest people on this blog and I always look forward to reading your posts because you are never confrontational or have any ulterior motives. You are just genuinely a kind person. A very happy Hannukah to you and your family and Peace in the world.

Thank you everyone. I do cherish the friendships I have found on this blog. This "animal crazy" woman realized she was not crazy at all - there were many more like her, thank God.

We have definitely made things happen for so many animals, people, etc. I do wish it could happen for sweet Vivi. My heart has also been breaking thinking how cold it is there. It is horribly cold in Memphis, so I can only imagine what NY is like right now.

Susan, I had no idea how close they came to getting her at the airport. So close and yet so far away!

Susan, your soup kitchen story reminded me of something. We had an incredible Thanksgiving dinner for our older patients (our teen group). We decorated the room like a Victorian home (even a pretend fireplace), and many people dressed in Victorian dress and served the kids like waiters and waitresses. One of the young men was heard saying, "You all did this for us?" He was so touched. These kids are not used to such fun and luxury, and seeing them happy, warm and full did our hearts so much good.

I am so proud to be a part of the HIV team at St. Jude Hospital. The tenderness and kindness I see these doctors and nurses (and others) show these children gives me a good feeling about my world no matter what else is in the news that day. They are truly concerned and love each and every one of these patients.

I have this same pride over the kindness of the people I have met on this blog towards animals and humans as well. So many wonderful things occur I hear about by e-mails, and they never make the blog. There are some incredible people in this group.

Thank you, Margot. I feel very blessed to be in this special group of as Kathleen put it "animal crazy" women and I'm proud of it. I wish all of you a very Happy Holiday season and may 2008 be full of only good tidings.
Kathleen, it was very rewarding to be able to bring some comfort and warmth to the people at the soup kitchen. They were all ages , 2 families were there which was heartbreaking to see. There was enough food for seconds and bags of food and loaves of bread for anyone to take along. Two of my friends played piano and sang during the meal, which they do every month. But that young guy who slept outside the night before and was exhausted affected us the most. The weather is bitterly cold and that night was also so windy. How could one not worry about the homeless, both humans and our furry babies, during this season?
We have helped so many as a group. May we continue to do so and be able to add a special whippet to that group. One way or another, we need to have an answer.

Daddy God, please bring Vivi to rescue quickly. The thought of another winter is excrutiating. Love lives here Daddy God and where love and agreement live, your presence hovers and miracles happen. Thank you for keeping Vivi in your care and warm embrace. Thank you for keeping her far away from all harm. We ask you to calm her heart so her fear will disappear and she will approach the rescuer you have chosen. Give her dreams in her sleep of home and love and human companionship. Cause her to WANT to be rescued. Shine your light on her and bring her out in the open. Dear Lord, bring her home safely and fill our hearts with joy and laughter because of her safe return. We rejoice in your love and tender care. Our faith is strong. We will never be moved and we will never give up on this precious girl. She is a part of our lives and the desire of our hearts. You are our King. We love you, we depend on you and await the mighty miracle of you bringing this sweet and precious girl home safely. Thank you Daddy God, In Jesus's Name, we praise you!!

Heal all of our hearts and holds us all close to you as we work each day to save and comfort your creation. Help us Daddy, strengthen us and show us the way. In Jesus's Name, we thank you!

Was Lexi ever sighted?

I just got this question from a NY searcher and I can't answer it but I told her I'd post this for her. Maybe someone has it. She wants a story that has passed through her email box and was deleted. This is cut and pasted from her email. You can post it here or send it to me and I'll pass it on. I do not know the story beyond what is here:

It was a story told from the dogs point of view.
A boy had a dog and he grew up, got married, had children and needed to move because of a job. The dog loved the children and watched over them. The dog became a hassle for him and he gave it to the shelter to be put to sleep. A very sad story, but I want my step daughter to see it because she just had a baby and I think she is ignoring her and I want her to feel bad....

Karen, I just emailed the story to you as a word doc. It is a terribly sad story that happens every day of the year, I am sure.
I thought about posting here it but I could not bring myself to do so.

I really wish you would post the story. I too have family that in my opinion, get what I call disposa-pets. I usually end up with them, since I have a commitment to even my family's animals. My sister has an old golden retriever, the best dog you could ever want. He was a perfect dog his entire life, and very smart and loving. Now, he's 12 years old, and he has tumours all over him, but she won't take him to the vet because she lost her job and "can't afford it." I would believe this, except that she also has a younger dog (about 1 years old), that she just adores. She takes him for $50.00 hair cuts, every month. Hmmm. hair cut? or vet to save my old dog's life?. What a question. For me, it's more like, my dog broke his knee cap, home equity line of credit, or mortgage? Sorry, I'm rambling. If it's not too much trouble, I would also like a copy of that story.

Thanks,

Nancy

Nancy, I am sorry for this lovely elder dog. He deserves the world from his family...and you are truly a wonderful person to want to make sure he gets it. If this dog story, tilted "How Could You ..a dog's death". The title says it all.
Karen has emailed you the story.

Sorry, I meant to say that if the story does not open her eyes to her loyal and trusting and loving friend then she does not deserve him.

Actually Nancy, I sent the story to someone else who asked for it . If you email me GraceEstinnett(AT)hotmail.com I'll send it to you. I don't want to make everyone sad with it. I have it in my files now.

Matthew 18:19
If two of you shall agree on earth, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in Heaven.

Good morning Daddy God. We thank you for your presence and love in our lives. We ask you to totally and completely heal Mila's little Coco. We ask you dear Jesus to touch her body with your power and love. Bring her relief from all pain and nausea and release her from this sickness, for you are the Lord who heals us. Surround her with your presence and cause her to heal as she feels your light of glory flowing through every cell, every organ and every tissue of her body. Renew her body to the perfection that you created it to be. Wrap her in your arms of love and grace as you bring her into the perfect deliverance of complete restoration. We stand in agreement that this is done in your name Holy name, Jesus, our brother, our friend, our savior. We place Coco in the palm of your hand for complete redemption from all illness. We bless her with life, health and joy. Thank you Daddy God!!

Update on Onnie:

Hi everyone, I wanted to let everyone know Missy Onnie is doing SO much better. No aggression signs for about a week or so. Between the tips from all of you, the information shared with me by my friend Amanda who has worked with showing German Shepherds and training security dogs, the information I have read on the internet, and some tips given to me by the woman who will be helping me train ALL THREE of my dogs in January, it is definitely working.

Kathy Dunn who trains at Dogs Rule in Memphis, TN, will be going through the training with my dogs and myself in January. She is very good from what I have heard, and we are excited. Believe it or not, she felt the REAL challenge would be Tinkerbell the little JRT "target butt"/chi mix of mine. Man did she have that one right! The next would be the full-blooded chihuahua, Sophie. Right again! She feels Onnie will be the easier lesson from what she has accomplished already in such a short timeframe. What can I say, this woman seems to know dogs and breed personalities for sure....

Here is their website. It is such a cute website I thought some of you might enjoy seeing it. Thanks again for all your help. My household has been much nicer with this harmony lately.

THE VIVI CANDLE SITE IS VERY LOW.........LESS THAN 10 CANDLES THE LAST TIME I WAS THERE.
CHECK THE OTHER SITES TOO, THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE AND PETS WHO NEED YOUR PRAYERS.

Any news on Lexi? Has she at least been sighted again?

MILA - I have been reading this and wondering the same question. I just called Laura the owner, and unfortunately Lexi is still missing. They do not seem to have had any reported sightings of her, and feel someone probably has her. She was microchipped with lots of ID on her, so hopefully a vet will notice this and scan her or someone will return her soon.

If anyone is reading this post and has Lexi (or Vivi), PLEASE contact the owners and return their precious babies. Laura is very, very sad over losing Lexi, and loves her very much I could tell.

I have given Laura the link for the blog so hopefully she can post and keep us informed about the search for Lexi. I also left my cell phone number with her in case she finds Lexi or needs our help in trying to cover an area with flyers, etc. Keep saying prayers for Lexi and Vivi please.

Hello everyone. I am sorry I have never made it to this site. Thank you Kathy for calling me.
Unfortunately as Kathy has said we have not had any sightings of Lexi since the day after she went missing. There have been lots of call with people who think a dog they say may be Lexi but none were.

I believe someone has her, fell in love with her and wants to keep her. If thats the case and you are reading this I am begging you to please return her to her family. She is loved and missed more than words can explain. She is a family member to us not "just a dog". I cry every day for her. We desperately want her back in our lives. No questions asked and there is a reward.
Thank you to everyone who continues to keep an eye out for her. We are not giving up on bringing her home and thank you for not giving up either.
I will keep you posted of any news.

Does anyone remember that website with the list of vets in areas of the country? I would like to contact those in this area for Lexi. Maybe someone will come in and the vet can scan and find her that way.

Margot, somehow I was thinking it might have been you that found that list before for us. Thanks.
