Never have had a good opinion of the Southern Christian Leadership Conferences, and my opinion is even worse now. In my opinion, they and Michael Vick make fish smell like roses!

Deaths by falling or drowning are not uncommon—in 2004, three horses died in the first heat alone. This year’s race takes place August 9-12.

(Jacksonville, FL) -- A controversial dog chew toy was being sold on the internet, with the promise of a contribution to the Jacksonville Humane Society. The animal organization says they have no connection to the toys. They are designed to "bite back" at NFL star Michael Vick. The doggie chew toy is created in the likeness of Vick, wearing his number seven Atlanta Falcons jersey with football in hand. He is currently facing dog fighting charges. The website selling the toy originally said proceeds of the sales would go to the Jacksonville Humane Society. Now, the site has changed it's song, saying the money will be donated anonymously to an unnamed charity. Jacksonville Humane Society spokesmen say that even if the group were approached to be part of the fund raiser, it would decline.

we are all OK. the tornado hit not too far from my house. i was really scared - so were my babies. i stayed with them until it passed as the tornado warning was issued right before i left to go to workand i wasn't leaving them alone. we had 3 feet of rushing water going down my street and it was pitch black at 7:00 a.m. i don't know how people do it in the areas where tornados ared common. i really was messed up. the homes and buildings in brooklyn are a disaster and there hasn't been a tornado since 1889 there. geez - mother natures must be angry about something... (MICHAEL VICK....)

DARLENE AND SUSAN - You should live in our area. The suburbs of Memphis get hit worse it seems, and the smaller areas in surrounding Mississippi, Arkansas and Tennessee.
I live not far from the Wolf River, and it seems to have some effect on redirecting the tornadoes, but we have sirens and warnings A LOT. My sons used to get the animals, blankets, and take themselves into our inner hallway without any windows. I would refuse to go. So one day Nick told me, "Mom, we are going to look up and see you flying through the air like Dorothy and Toto from the Wizard of Oz!"
We never have a tornado that I don't remember Nick and his famous statement! That boy, really miss him around the house sometimes!

Darlene, glad to read that you and your babies are fine. We have had tornado warnings here occasionaly and some of my friends did spend the time in the basements of their homes until the warnings passed. We're due for another hurricane according to the weathermen but I would prefer that they are wrong this time. Kathleen, I didn't know your area gets so many warnings. Mother Nature does have a mind of her own.
Laura, I just had my cocker spaniel to the vet today and asked about allergies since Piper's skin is so dry and she gets itchy and on occasion has had some inflamation. The vet said the dog food we feed her, dry Iams with Lamb and Rice,was very good and to keep her on that, but to add fish oil capsules to her diet, either have her take them as a pill or split it over her food. I'm going to give the pill to her so she won't stop eating her food because of the added taste. The fish oil is supposed to add moisture to her skin and shine up her fur. Our groomer gives Piper an oatmeal bath and has an anti-itch spray she uses on her which does help for a few weeks. I'm going to find out the name of that spray next time Piper goes in.

I have a 9 year old cocker who suffered on and off with allergies. I tried several different antihistimines, i.e. Benadryl, Chlorotrimitime but the one that works for his is Tavist. Not Tavist D just Tavist. Also at one point he got really bad and my vet had been trying so many different types of prescription shampoos that didn't work so I went to an allergist and she put him on Cephalexin because the rash he had got infected, it worked like magic. She also told me to shampoo him 2 x a week with Chlorhexiderm 2% shampoo and follow the instructions and for a spray that I could use if he has a slight itch is Relief, it works. Since I have kept up the routine of bathing often with the shampoo, which you leave on for 10 minutes, he has not had a serious bout of itching and when he starts to itch slightly I give him the proper dose of Tavist and he is good to go the next day. As for the Shampoo and the Relief spray I found it the cheapest on line at petexus.com I also give him Derm Caps (along with my other 2 dogs which is a Jack Russell and an Aussie mix) and they all have great fur. When my cocker goes to the groomer she has a bottle of the Chlorhexiderm at the shop and that is all I ever bath him in. The allergist said the 99% of the time it is not a food allergy and in his case it wasn't, she also took a scrapping of his skin to make sure it is just an allergy which it is.
I looked up the corporate office for the sponsors to this deadly horse race and sent them an email to tell them about this and how it affects their stores image to be associated with this kind of thing. I will follow up with faxes to the stores tomorrow. I can't believe what some people will do for intertainment.

I forwarded this info. to my daughter. She told me she had to switch to "people" food like cooked chicken, vegs., etc. because her dog just can't keep any type of dog food down (i.e. diarrhea)and then he gets a flare up of itching and ear infections). But she explained that the "people" food was getting expensive due to the fact that he's a 110 lbs. (18 month old) and eats more than the average dog. She asked me to ask if there was any other type of diet that she could experiment with because today she found some red, crusty patches on his front legs after he ate. So maybe this is bothering him, too. Poor boy has been through so much. Just trying to find something he could adjust to.

My daughters JRT had allergies..they always said
FOOD...just goes to show you so many vets don't really know when a dog starts itching and having ear problems. the Jack Russell was also on a Catfish and potato diet, food from the vet and I don't think it did a whole lot of good...she finally just seemed to outgrow her problems, but she is still a very fussy eater and now that she's 12, the has a sensitive tummy....
My Dalmation had some skin problems and I switched her to Avo-derm, an avacado based food...It helped her..I

Laura - Michelle, my Pit rescue friend as a French Bull Mastiff also, i will ask her if she ever epxerienced anything like that. my sharpei is allergic to certain food, grass, leaves, dust, etc. UGH!!!!!! i am dont sure what your baby's symptoms are but if it's the skin problems, a sharpei breeder told me to bathe her in 1/2 Listerine and 3/4 Selsun Blue. it works!!!!!! antiseptic and skin conditioner... just another idea.

Re: food allergies: Tell her to avoid corn and wheat and probably soy, in whatever food she buys. It is very often the grains they are sensitive to. Dogs didn't really evolve to be able to digest grain and yet most dog food is mostly grain. Also stick to the simplest list of ingredients so you can figure out what is causing the problem- one made with only rice and chicken, say, not also oats, beef, barley and soy, etc. If that one doesn't work try a different simple list. And many people have solved intractable food allergy problems are feeding RAW and there are beginning to be dog food makers who are making that easier. Laura, My neighbor who has a skipperkey started feeding him a wheat free dog food and that has helped the skin and ear infections. My other friend who has a pug with bad allergy problems found out that there was a thyroid problem and also started using a duck and potato dog food. Between the thyroid pills and the new food, Maxine is doing much better and the vet said to switch the other 2 dogs to this food. Hope one of these remedies help your daughter's dog.

My cocker spaniel, Piper, has a Schipperke boyfriend named Yogi who I wrote about. He is crazy about her and will run up the road if on a walk panting away until he gets to his Piper. They look so cute together. And Piper always stops and looks up his driveway when we go on a walk. One day when I went to get in my car in the garage I heard whining. Thinking I left Piper out by accident, I look around and all of a sudden this little schipperke head is looking at me. Yogi ran up the block while walking with his owner and ran into our garage looking for his girl. Now this is what I call Puppy Love.
Kathleen: That was so beautiful and so sad. Damn stupid war, we're in-for what??? I tried to email it to Irene but it said I have no mail acct. set up on the blog and I didn't want to set one up. I will email her and tell her where it is on the blog.
Kathleen, I just watched the video. It's a must for everyone to see what our soldiers go through. May all those in that video come home safe and sound.

If you could ask your friend about her French bull mastiff and let me know that would be great. My daughter called the breeder about some of these issues to get some feed back from her but she more or less brushed her off by saying none of her dogs have those problems and she can't believe this dog has this. So she decided to figure this out on her own. She's been to the vet numerous times and they can't pinpoint the problem. He's such a big mush and I feel so bad for my grandbaby Luca.

Everyone, I just found out that Bonnie's doggie, Peanut, is at the vet and pretty darn sick. I gave Bonnie a call, and she was waiting on the vet to call her back. She sounded very worried.
I started a candle site ("Pnut") for Peanut. Please light a candle and say prayers for Peanut and Bonnie. I know how much this meant to me when I was so worried about my Tinkerbell late that night. I would not have made it without all of your prayers and advice about what you thought was wrong with her - and you were all right. I know Bonnie will appreciate your prayers for her baby too.

MADISON UPDATE:
August 8
Just a quick update with a few important things.
As my husband puts it, "Madison is in recovery mode." She seems to be really trying to get better! At therapy, the therapists are excited because Madison seems to be trying to initiate rolling over. When they sit her up, her head control is getting better. She's moving a little bit more. This little girl is such a strong little fighter! I don't know why I bother to worry about the future. Between her will to live and the love of God, surely it will be ok! We continue to get ready for school to start and Madison's trip to Amsterdam!
On that subject, some wonderful people put together a bar-b-q plate fundraiser to help with expenses to Amsterdam. John and I were so touched when we heard they were doing it! It continues to warm my heart that so many people love Madison and our family. Bar-b-q plates are being sold for $5.00 each on August 18, 2007. They will be passed out at Lopez Supermarket on International Blvd. in Brownsville. If you want to buy plates but would rather pick them up in Los Fresnos at the United Methodist Church, that is also an option, but you have to submit your name beforehand so she knows how many to bring. She will only deliver enough plates for the people who pre-ordered or paid in advance.
If you would like to order bar-b-q plates to benefit Madison, please call Patty Talamantez at 466-9167. I hear the food will be great and all proceeds will go into Madison's account for her trip. Here is the information again:

Vivi only has 33 candles. I'm going to lite some for all.
I lit some for Vivi and Peanut earlier today. I just read on the candle site that there is a limit of 24 candles each per person per day and that 100 per week is the limit with no copying of same message. They will also put out candles that have too many of the same message. Not what I wanted to read. We need more people lighting on the sites if the candles are to be a substantial number. I guess I'm at my limit because I can't light anymore at a few of the sites. I'll have to wait until tomorrow and see if I can light some more.
