Something's fishy

Now, apparently, even your mollies and tetras aren't safe from the long tentacles of the melamine-contamination scandal that has rocked the pet-food industry.

Sergeant's Pet Care Products announced a voluntarily recall of some lots of Atlantis Goldfish Flake Food and Atlantis Tropical Fish Flake Food because they were found to contain melamine.

The company said the effect of melamine on ornamental fish is unknown, though it suggests that overfeeding likely poses a greater threat than the trace amounts of melamine in the food.

Denise - It looks like to me we need to start at the top and fire all the FDA people and start all over. Maybe we could form the new FDA from the Animal House blog (hee, hee). Bet the pet foods would be safe then ...

Come on...now fish food? When are we gong to be able to trust that what we give our pets is safe once again?

The FDA is so severely underfunded that they really can't do their job properly and enforce existing regulations. Same with the EPA. Usually republican administrations hit these kinds of agencies hard when they are looking for places for budget cuts. Any "human services" types of budgets at the federal level are at the top of the list to cut funds. How else is the current administration going to fund Iraq and so on?

Anyway, has anyone heard anymore about who's food has been contaminated with acetaminophen? This is deadly to cats, and not good in quantity for dogs either. Last I heard some food was voluntarily tested at a Texas lab, but FDA and the company was not admitting to it. Nice, huh? Just let everyone keep feeding it.

A friend has had dogs get really sick halfway through a bag of Diamond Naturals. Does anyone know anything about this one or heard anything?

Libby, the link is about the question you asked at 1:54 Friday..
