You know, I think I am going to nominate my sweet Tinkerbell for her act this past Saturday. If not for her waking me up when she did, I think I might have been in a diabetic coma.
Do you think this is too weak a nomination everyone? Thanks for your help.
I think it's a great idea, Kathleen. Tinkerbell did a great thing and it should be acknowledged. She has my vote.
She also has my vote. Go for it.
Tinkerbell definitely performed an heroic act.
Go for it!!!
I am not to happy with the ASPCA Law Officers right now and wouldn't give them the time of day!!
Strategy for Friday June 29
Happy Day!!! Cavel is closed! But we’ve all been here before. So many ups and downs, it’s like an emotional roller coaster!! We MUST put an end to this once and for all by passing the federal legislation. Only then can we be assured that no horse is ever slaughtered in America again!!
THREE more cosponsors in the House this week for a total of 173. A special thanks to the calling groups in Arizona, Wisconsin and South Carolina….way to go!!!!
As you know, we’ve been informed that the sponsors of this legislation WOULD PREFER NOT to proceed without an appropriate number of cosponsors. It does NOT mean they CANNOT proceed. We MUST get more cosponsors for this to move forward SUCCESSFULLY.
IMPORTANT NOTE… Our message is not about PROCEDURE (there are many ways a bill can get to the floor) but it is about STRATEGY. We are very well aware of the fact that a certain number is not NEEDED to bring a bill to the floor. The SPONSORS are looking for the higher number in order to assure passage of this legislation.

Don’t forget to call your OWN representatives! In addition, when you contact your Representatives in the House today please remember to urge them to oppose SECTION 123 OF THE AMENDMENT to the 2007 Farm Bill. Section 123 of the Amendment would nullify any State or Federal legislation that would prohibit transport of animals, INCLUDING HORSES, for the purpose of slaughter. It could actually allow the Texas slaughterhouses to open again. You might want to start with HR503 and end with this just to let them know that this bill is trying to make an end run around the federal legislation that we are trying to pass. This way they can connect the dots!!
There is still a need for state groups…..as you’ve read above, they’ve been VERY effective in getting cosponsors. Right now we’re looking for leaders in for Missouri, Louisiana, Vermont and New Hampshire. To find out how you can help, contact sbreaux1@verizon.net
We’ve received word from several offices that the pro slaughter people have gotten organized and are making a lot of noise this year. We can’t let them be louder than us. Remember….WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE….let it be heard!!
Thanks and have a great weekend.

Horse slaughter to end pending further appeals
Tribune staff report
Published June 29, 2007
A horse slaughtering plant in DeKalb will not open for business Friday after the failure of last-ditch efforts to prevent enforcement of a new state law that forbids production of horse meat for human consumption.
U.S. District Court Judge Frederick Kapala on Thursday refused to extend his June 1 order, which stayed enforcement of the law. The judge had already extended the order once. The order expired Thursday night, thus making continued operation of the plant illegal.
A lawyer for Cavel International Inc. said Thursday that the plant would not open Friday. However, he said Cavel would appeal the decision to the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, probably Friday, and would request expedited handling of the case.
The Cavel plant has been the only horse-slaughtering plant still in operation in the United States. It filed suit in federal court seeking to prohibit enforcement of the state law on several grounds, including a claim that it improperly gives the force of law to a moral position held by some people that horses are pets and shouldn't be killed for food. The suit also said the law is an unconstitutional infringement on the federal government's authority to regulate interstate and foreign trade.
The law was passed by the legislature and signed last month by Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
The Humane Society of the United States petitioned to intervene in the case on the state's side, and when the judge refused, the group appealed. The judge issued an order last week saying he is legally barred from ruling on the case while the appeal is pending.

Annie's incredible journey ends, she returns home
(Last updated: 6:28 PM)
By STEPHEN BAUMANN
Staff Writer
ENGLEWOOD -- Call it "Survivor, Rotonda."
You wouldn't think a 22-pound package of wavy, white fur could tough it out alone for four months in a land of ticks, heat and alligators.
Cue the cameras, Walt.
Annie, the wayward bichon frise that ran off Feb. 22, is alive, relatively well and recuperating at the Englewood Animal Health Center.
She was captured on Sunday night in Rotonda with the help of the EARS Animal Rescue Sanctuary.
"I just can't believe it's her after all this time. It's just amazing to me," said Katie Wagner, animal coordinator with EARS, based in Englewood.
After breaking away from her owner, Annie became the most-wanted-animal in a cape-wide search involving dozens of people and hours, days and weeks of effort. The dog had been rescued from what Wagner called a "dog mill" in Wisconsin, where she continually bred litters of puppies until she was no longer of use. Small Paws Rescue, an organization that rescues bichons, took 4 1/2-year-old Annie and arranged an adoption with a woman living Rotonda.
But that was only the first leg of Annie's incredible journey in circles.
Out for a walk her second day in Florida, Annie wrenched herself away from her new owner and darted off, dragging her three-foot lead behind.
A major search and rescue effort ensued.
Small Paws sent three people from Michigan; they spent more than a week here. EARS coordinated more than 50 local responders. People from Fort Myers to Venice participated.
The Bonnie Parker of bichons, Annie eluded the dragnet.
She was netted twice, but rolled and ran.
She was shot twice with a tranquilizer dart, but "took off like a rocket" when hit, Wagner said.
Repeatedly, traps were baited and set. Repeatedly, she foiled them.
People searched. Residents reported sightings. But every time, Annie ran. Fast.
"She's been all over Rotonda, in all four quadrants," Wagner said. "Every time we'd get close to catching her in one area, she'd next be seen a couple of miles away."
Wagner acted as point on the rescue mission, taking calls and hunting down leads. In all, she said, she filled two 70-page notebooks with reports.
The canine intelligence chatter ceased suddenly two months ago.
"It was on April 5 that we got a sighting of an alligator with a dog," Wagner said. "After that, I didn't really hear anything until June 8."
The call said a small, white dog was being fed by a homeowner. Wagner investigated.
"I said, 'my God, it's Annie.' I didn't think she was alive," Wagner said.
Apparently, Wagner said, the peripatetic pooch was mooching meals house to house.
"A lot of people were feeding her," Wagner said. "People saw her hunting and attacking geckos. Other than that, I don't know what she was eating."
Annie would rest near homes, behind bushes, Wagner said. That way, she left herself escape routes.
"She's so fast," Wagner said.
Annie finally got outgunned Sunday.
Wagner showed residents in the Annapolis section of Rotonda how to set a trap.
They placed the food nearby, and every day the dog got closer. Finally, the food was placed inside the box and the door slapped shut.
Wagner got the call at 8:15 p.m. Sunday.
"I saw her in the trap and thought, 'Is it her or another dog?'" Wagner said. "I got down on my hands and knees and saw her tag."
Annie was a dirty, flea-infested mess.
"I don't know how she could see anything. Her eyes were so matted over with hair," Wagner said.
She brought the bichon to Englewood Animal Health Center on Placida Road, where she was cleaned and shaved and put back in a cage.
In all this time, she had lost her lead, but no weight. Her tag Monday said she was now 22.4 pounds.
"I just want to thank all of the amazing people who stepped forward, drove in circles and walked and walked to help find and capture the dog," Wagner said.
Someone from Small Paws is flying down Thursday afternoon to bring Annie to Oklahoma City, where she'll be put in a half-way home -- a socialization and rehabilitation center -- for ex-mill dogs.
What wonderful news about Annie ---- Vivi ---- please make our hearts happy by being our next miracle to show up healthy and alive.

Posted this morning from Angela - our Angel at Cavel:
Good Morning Everyone,
Today we have much to celebrate. Yesterday was a miracle and an overdue WIN for our horses, you each played a very important role in making this happen. Give yourselves a HUGE HUG, you ALL deserve it !
Last night I crashed very early so, I am sorry I was not up to celebrate with you all, I was emotionally drained as you each were I am sure. When I woke up today, it seemed that I was scared to actually breathe until I went to CAVEL and seen it for my own eyes. We have many up's and down's in our BATTLE, more down's than well deserving up's.
So, I loaded the dogs for their daily field trip, LOL and drove to CAVEL.
As I turned the corner, I was still holding my breath, as I neared the entrance I had to slow down and scan the lot over and over again. I was looking for something that was NOT there !
For the first time in a very long time, CAVEL's parking lot was not full of victims awaiting their demise and looking back at me through the holes in the steel trailers, full of their friends and babies. There were no eyes asking for love, asking for help or asking for an explanation as to why there were there, what did they do so wrong to land them in such a HELL HOLE? Thank GOD there were no eyes staring back at me for guidance today, THANK GOD !!!
I stoped the car and I began crying, joy, relief and sadness all in one ! The dogs started whining so it was a family moment !!!
The parking lot was empty except for 5 employee cars, one of the owners rented VAN from a place I know and the guy who resides on the property !
NO TUCKER, NO USDA AGENT and not suprised but NO VET !!!
Most importantly, NO HORSES !!!
Well folks, CAVEL is in Chicago asking for an Emergency Restraining Order now, please pray that what I have seen today does not change come Monday !
GOD BLESS each of you, thank you for all you do to keep our horses safe from CAVEL. Now we push forward to DC again for the passage of our Federal Bills !!! Do not lay down you're boxing gloves just yet, we are not finished, nor is CAVEL !!!
With much LOVE and Respect to each of you,
Angela Valianos
we may be on a roll today!!!!!! BIG WELCOME HOME SMOOCHES TO ANNIE!!!!!! Michelle just called me from GA. Antonio (Ringo) the baby Pitty who was chained is LEAVING TODAY FOR A TRIAL WEEKEND AT WHAT MAY BE HIS FOREVER HOME!!!!!! as Monica said, "one down, 3 to go!!!" thanks to all of you who have hung in there and are continuing to support those 4 babies!!!! without you, we would have been nowhere!!! as Michelle said, "there is a miracle out there - we just haven't found it yet." maybe today is the start we all have been waiting for - all of the lost ones will make their way!!! again, all of this is due to our girl - THANK YOU AND GET YOUR ASS OVER HERE, VIVI!!!!
I always believe in true Miracles from God because He can do many things impossible into Possible!
Vivi will be next when she wants to be out in the fields and says "Hello!"
I believe Vivi is out there in the Forest Park areas somewhere on her own or with someone who lives in the Forest Parks areas.

The Lord our God is a faithful Father. He sees into our hearts and holds our lives in His hands. He has witnessed the good in this world and cried over the evil, wishing that every one would come to Him and love Him. He moves the hearts of those in authority, even the wicked ones, to cause them to do what is right even when they don't want to or understand why they did it. God does not change. He loves His children and He will fight for them to deliver them from evil. And those who blatantly refuse Him, will be brought low in order to save his precious ones who adore Him. He heard the cries of the horses and reached down and grabbed them into His arms and rapidly jerked them into His Heavenly Kingdom of love and light. They run free now and dwell in the light of His presence with joy. Keep Cavel closed forever Daddy. Our cries of pain and sorrow has reached His throne. He will deliver us and those we love. As we continue to fight for the lives of His creatures, know that He stands by our side. He is for us and not against us. He will continue to give us the strength we need to carry out His will. And one day, when all is said and done, He will wipe every tear from our eyes and our hearts will be healed and whole once again. We love you Daddy.
Good morning Daddy God, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, for rescueing Annie. Thank you for closing down Cavel. Thank you that the horrific cries are now silent. Daddy God, do not allow them to re-open. We don't care who you have to remove to keep these doors closed. Let your power overcome all evil. Bring us the blessing of Vivi coming home, just as you gave us Annie. Help us to draw ever closer to you. The closer we are to you, the greater the victories. All our faith goes up to your throne and we place our hearts in your hands. Hold us in your love and victory. With you by our side Daddy God, our best days are yet to come. In Jesus's Name we praise you!!! We rejoicefully remove Annie's name from the lost and add her to the healing list. Thank you Daddy God. We truly and deeply thank you and give you all the Glory.

LADIES, I WANTED TO SHARE THIS IMPORTANT INFO IAM CROSSPOSTING FROM THE ITCHMO SITE.
HOW CAN SOMEONE LIKE THIS MORON THINK HE IS SMART ENOUGH TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT BUT DO SOMETHING SO STUPID AND CRUEL?
I KNOW WHERE I WOULD STRAP HIM TO ON THE NEXT FAMILY ROAD TRIP, EXCEPT I WOULDN'T STOP TO HOSE HIM OFF!
Why Mitt Romney Is Not Fit To Take Care Of Your Dog, Let Alone Run For The Presidency
Posted on Thursday, June 28th, 2007 at 6:07 pm in Misc., News, Boston, National, Dogs, Cats, Other, Recalls & Safety.
EDITORIAL
Boxes, bicycles, bags are things you can strap to the top of a car. Your family dog is not one of those items. Mr. Mitt Romney, for not knowing the difference, we believe that you lack the powers of judgment fit for the White House.
You strapped your dog in its cage to the top of your family car for 12 hours at highway speeds. During that trip, you saw how scared the dog was, because it defecated on top of the vehicle. This gave you a chance to correct your error in judgment. But instead, you stopped to hose down the dog and then put the wet dog back on top of the car for the remainder of the trip. You set the example before your kids that it’s OK to treat a dog as you would a box, a bicycle or a bag.
Itchmo is non-partisan and rarely takes political sides, but we are asking our readers, and all cat- and dog-lovers to rule out Mitt Romney as a presidential candidate. It’s not about whether he’s a democrat or republican — we could care less. It’s because he treated his family pet no better than a box, bicycle or bag despite a chance to make the right decision. What he committed was animal abuse, clear and simple.
If he becomes the President of the United States, Mitt Romney will see many laws and regulations that affect the treatment of animals — your cats and dogs included. We have no reason to believe that he cares any more for pets today than before. If he’s willing to treat his own family dog with such carelessness and disdain, why should he care for members of your pet family? Where was the compassion when his own dog was scared to death and looking for comfort and love? You can tell a lot about a man’s character by looking at the way he treats animals. We can all agree than an animal abuser does not belong in the White House.
Cast your vote for any other candidate, just not Mitt Romney.

Amen Rosa, he would never get my vote. Here is hoping the public will all feel the same as we do.
He most certainly will not get my vote and I will pass this on to everyone I know.
OK GIRLS, HERE IS HIS EXCUSE TO WHY HE STRAPED HIS DOG TO THE TOP OF HIS CAR FOR A 12 HR RIDE.
I WONDER IF HE WOULD LIKE TO BE STRAPPED TO THE WING OF A 747 FOR HIS NEXT FLIGHT OUT OF TOWN?
THIS GUY WENT FROM DUMB TO DUMBER!!
Mitt Romney Defends His Actions, Says Dog Liked The Car Roof
Posted on Friday, June 29th, 2007 at 12:54 pm in News, Boston, National, Dogs.
Presidential candidate Mitt Romney came to his own rescue (sort of) on a Thursday campaign stop. In defending his actions of strapping the family dog in a crate to the top of the car for 12 hours, he said “[the dog, Seamus,] scrambled up there every time we went on trips. He got it all by himself and enjoyed it.”
Don’t blame the dog for your own stupid actions.
A grown man and the head of a family needs better judgment skills — especially if that man wants to be the president.
What’s the Massachusetts penalty for animal cruelty? “Imprisonment in the state prison for not more than 5 years or imprisonment in the house of correction for not more than 2 1/2 years or by a fine of not more than $2,500, or by both such fine and imprisonment.”
More on Mitt Romney and his dog after the jump.

From The AP via The Washington Post:
An example of Mitt Romney’s crisis management skills has turned into something of a political problem for the Republican presidential contender.
Now the story, recounted this week in a Boston Globe profile of Romney, has touched off howls of outrage from bloggers and animal rights activists even though it was presented in the story as an example of Romney’s coolness under trying circumstances.
“Massachusetts animal cruelty laws specifically prohibit anyone from carrying an animal `in or upon a vehicle, or otherwise, in an unnecessarily cruel or inhuman manner or in a way and manner which might endanger the animal carried thereon,’” wrote Steve Benen in a post on the blog “Crooks and Liars.”
We need to make our government take more caution in ok'ing products from foreign countries, especially China from I'm seeing lately..The dog and cat food contimination was uncalled for. They cheated the companies they canned/processed the pet food for. I went on the "Crooks and Liars" blog and found toys, rattles, were recalled. Some had kerosene inside them and I'd like to know why. The following petition has been going around for a short time, read it and I think you'll agree, it should be signed:::
http://defendourpets.myfastforum.org/index.php
I already signed it Rooooby. Now they found a problem in the fish and seafood from China. There is no regard for what goes into people and animals. Who knows what will be next?
Hoping there will be news about our Canine Girl very soon. Vivi brought us all together and her miracle is long overdue.
Susan, when I read they made some sort of a toy big glass eye and put kerosene in it, that made me sick. I heard about the contaminated fish food a long time ago. I'm being very careful what I buy and read labels really good now..
I had a dream about Vivi today...I sure wish the little scamp would show her pretty face..
Crossposting this ---- finally our cause is reaching the front pages...
Good Morning Everyone,
I was asked to repost this on the horse rescue threads...so here it is!
Check out this article on the front page of the St. Petersburg Times, another step taken to raise public awareness in our effort to end horse slaughter.
Brian did an amazing job interviewing absolutely everyone he could contact over the course of more than a month for this story.
BIG THANKS TO THE ST. PETERSBURG TIMES FOR HELPING US RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT HORSE SLAUGHTER IN THIS COUNTRY!

OMG Kathy, this is incredible. Thank God the media is finally opening their eyes and ears to this. I am so sick of hearing about the immigration bill and Paris Hilton, but no news about the horse slaughter fight. Thanks so much for posting this.
Just found another article in the Houston Chronicle about Carvel.

Two recent articles - the one from The News Journal was front and center on the front page last Sunday. The Hunt Magazine also features MAHR and PFL in the latest edition.

Just heard on Fox news that tires from China are falling apart on the road. They have already caused one death.
Does anyone think that maybe this is China's way of slowly getting rid of the powerful United States?
Glad to see so much media on the horses --- it is about time. Now to get S311 and HR503 co-sponsored and passed.....I'll be back with another call in list for everyone - and don't forget to call, fax or email your own representative and senators --- together we will get this done for our precious horses.
Thanks for all your help everyone. You're the best.
Kay, if you find the particulars about the type of tires and the places selling them, could you please e-mail me this. My son just purchased some tires, and I bet they were from Walmart. I am concerned about this. Thanks.
Kathleen, they listed about five brands mostly for SUV's but I can't remember the names. I'll check out the local fox site and see if they have it on there and let you know.
Kathleen, I could not find it on Fox but found this article on ABC. It did not list Walmart as one that had the tires. Hope this helps.

THIS MORNING - THERE ARE NO HORSE SLAUGHTER HOUSES OPERATING IN THE UNITED STATES!!!! DOES THAT SOUND WONDERFUL OR DOES THAT SOUND WONDERFUL???
Here is todays' call in strategy --- posting the long version as a refresher. Thanks to all who can take a few moments to call, fax or email for these precious lives.
Current Strategy:
The current strategy is to get more co-sponsors in both the House (HR503) and the Senate (S311).
The sponsors of both of these bills have indicated that they will not move forward until there is enough support to assure success.
The public is being asked to contact their congressmen and senators and ask them to co-sponsor their respective bills.
We have been asked NOT to call the leadership yet. There are several reasons...one is that there is a hold on S311 and we need 60 cosponsors to break a hold. The other is that they are looking for more cosponsors in the House to ensure success. The legislators who introduced these bills HR503 and S311 will not make that kind of a move until they believe they have a very good chance to get it passed. To do it any other way would be to set themselves up for failure. So, while it does get frustrating (and boring at times), the key is still cosponsors.
Strategy will change as this campaign progresses into the next stage.
TODAY'S STRATEGY WITH TALKING POINTS:
1. Let your Senators know that now that two of the slaughter houses are closed in this country and the third is on it's way out, it is URGENT that we get this legislation passed to stop the transport of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.
2. Let your Senators know that their support isn't enough but we NEED the co-sponsors for S311 to get this to the floor for a vote. You can let them know you are aware there is a hold on the bill and they are the only ones that can help us move forward.
3. Tell your congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.
3. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.
Strategy for Monday July 2:
As of today, there are no horses being slaughtered on American soil. While this may only be temporary, it is a reason to celebrate. HOWEVER, the slaughter of our horses will NEVER stop without the passage of federal legislation. Everyday that passes, more American horses are being transported out of this country to meet their horrible fate.
With all three slaughter houses shut down in America, we must now STOP THE CRUEL AND INHUMANE TRANSPORTATION. Tell your Senators/Representatives how much our horses are suffering on their way to Canada and Mexico. Each day the federal legislation is not passed our horses continue to suffer a cruel and inhumane journey.
In lieu of lists this week, we have been asked to contact the representatives in our district:
This week, your representatives will be working in their District Offices. The best thing you can do is to arrange a meeting with members of Congress who have not yet cosponsored, especially those who cosponsored last year. We urge you to try to make an appointment to meet with them in person. You should try to organize small local groups and request a meeting in their district office. Being constituents will make it easier to get an appointment. If the Representative is not available, then the District Director is the next best thing.
In addition, when you contact your Representatives in the House please remember to urge them to oppose SECTION 123 OF THE AMENDMENT to the 2007 Farm Bill.
For those of you who would like to make calls in addition to our strategy and need direction, you can follow the list posted by Habitat for Horses. But don’t forget to call your OWN reps. Also, please continue to follow your state leader's instructions and list.
There is still a need for state groups…..as you’ve read above, they’ve been VERY effective in getting cosponsors. Right now we’re looking for leaders in for Missouri, Louisiana, Vermont and New Hampshire. To find out how you can help, contact sbreaux1@verizon.net
Several offices have informed us that the pro slaughter people are more organized than ever and are making a lot of noise this year. We can’t let them be louder than us. Remember….WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE….let it be heard!!
Thanks and have a great day!

KATHY - THAT SOUNDS LIKE HEAVEN TO ME!!!!!!!!
Kathy - Have you heard anything about John Holland maybe making a press announcement or something such as this to give the strategy he has been making out for the horses after these Bills are passed? One thing I read this weekend was assessing a $40 (?) fee onto anyone registering a horse to put into a retirement fund for all horses.
I think a good strategy with statistics to help prove this would work would really turn some of the opinions of the Congressmen.
The $40 fee is something that is currently happening in the UK - they are years ahead of us as far as horses are concerned --- they even realized that two year olds are too young to be racing and wait until they are three before they race them. Something the US should follow. I haven't heard anything specifically but haven't been monitoring the TWR site that closely - that is where it will be mentioned probably.
I am still jumping with joy that Cavel is closed but saddened that our horses are now on a longer, more horrific ending and ride to Mexico or Canada. The only thing that will save them is the passage of the bills. I know I sound like a broken record but it is the truth. Pleae call, fax or email your senators and reps - they are probably in their home states for the holiday. Pay a special visit to them!!!
CAN YOU GUYS PLEASE SIGN PEPPER'S GUEST BOOK IN SUPPORT??? THIS IS A DEFFERENT TWIST - PEPPER IS A LAMB :)
As a personal favor to me, please read Pepper's story, and sign her guestbook - this is a sweet lamb that was born while her mother was on the way to the slaughter house, 6 years ago. Pepper would have been slaughtered with her mom if not for the Angelman's (friends of my family). She lives a beautiful life now, and a person moved in next door whose 2 large dogs bark at Pepper through her fence, which irritates the neighbor, so he has abused his influence as a cop to get Pepper's legal status changed, and now the family is being forced to give their baby up, probably to be slaughtered. Folks, where Pepper lives is FARM country! Please read the story and sign the guestbook (you don't have to leave your email if you don't want to), as this goes before City Council July 9th. She has even been the lamb in the Nativity scenes for the town! Just read for yourselves, I'm too mad! -By the way, officer Wentz did NOT want it known that he is a cop and used that to get his way, but fact is fact. Let's show them that Pepper has A LOT of friends!!
Thank you much,
Lynn

You got it Darlene ---- this is so similar to the horse stories ----- pregnant mama's and babies left to die.
it says it is full - what else can we do?
NEVERMIND - it let me sign and COMMENT
yey!!!!!
thanks Kathy!!!!!!!
Darlene - I'm going there now.
I am trying to sign Pepper's guestbook, but it keeps saying sorry, this guestbook is full. Is there anything else I can do?
Cross posting from MIDogs, with permission.
On Monday, June 25, 2007 I took my healthy 9 month old Border Collie
Vitaswimming at approximately 6:30 p.m. Vita and two other BC's spent
about an hour and a half diving off the dock, chasing the Water Kong,
and running around. The temperature that day was just over 90
degrees, but none of the dogs looked particularly winded or hot.
Vita emerged from the water and looked as if she was going to vomit.
She threw up lake water three times. I wasn't't particularly
concerned as she took in a lot of water from retrieving and swimming
so much and had seen other dogs do that in the past without
complications.
After the third time throwing up, she lay down and closed her eyes.
Her tongue was hanging out of her mouth and I began to suspect she
may have heat stroke. I immediately placed ice on her stomach and
checked her gums. They were pink. I took her temperature whi ch was
101.9, still normal. I then called my Vet who said these conditions
did not indicate heat stroke and said I needed to get emergency
medical attention right away.
Vita was not responsive and when I picked her up to put her in the
car she was limp and her eyes were still closed. Her breathing was
slow and her heart was racing. I arrived at the emergency clinic only
a half hour from the time
she showed signs of distress. The ER Vet asked me what sorts of
things Vita had been doing all day. I explained that she was crated
as I was gone for the latter part of the afternoon and that upon
coming home, the only other place she went was to the lake.
Vita's eyes were fixed and dilated and the Vet suggested there was
already brain damage. After administering an IV and oxygen, the Vet
called me in and said Vita was not responding and that it appeared
that she was suffering from some kind of toxic poisoning. H er heart
rate was 200. He mentioned that he had recently seen a couple of dogs
who died from Blue Green Algae Toxicity. I told him that the lake had
what appeared to be algae blooms on the surface of the water. Neither
of the other two dogs showed any of the signs that Vita had and that
neither dog took in as much water as Vita apparently did. We
decided to put her on a ventilator overnight and give her a "chance"
to pull through.
When I got home I did a Dogpile.com search of "Blue Green Algae
Toxicity in Dogs" and found some very disturbing information.
-Blooms can occur at any time, but most often occur in late summer or
early fall. They can occur in marine, estuarine, and fresh waters,
but the blooms of greatest concern are the ones that occur in fresh
water, such as drinking water reservoirs or recreational waters.
-Some cyanobacterial blooms can look like foam, scum, or mats on the
surface of fresh water lakes and ponds. The blooms can be blue,
bright green, brown, or red and may look like paint floating on the
water. Some blooms may not affect the appearance of the water. As
algae in a cyanobacterial bloom die, the water may smell bad.
-Some cyanobacteria that can form CyanoHABs (Harmful Algal Blooms)
produce toxins that are among the most powerful natural poisons
known. These toxins have no known antidotes.
-Swallowing water that has cyanobacterial toxins in it can cause
acute, severe gastroenteritis (including diarrhea and vomiting).
-Liver toxicity (i.e., increased serum levels of liver enzymes).
Symptoms of liver poisoning may takes hours or days to show up in
people or animals. Symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea, and
vomiting.
-Kidney toxicity.
-Neurotoxicity. These symptoms can appear within 15 to 20 m inutes
after exposure. In dogs, the neurotoxins can cause salivation and
other neurologic symptoms, including weakness, staggering, difficulty
breathing, convulsions, and death. People may have numb lips,
tingling fingers and toes, or they may feel dizzy.
Vita had indeed exhibited salivation and signs of weakness,
staggering, difficulty breathing and vomiting.
At 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 26, 2007 I called the Vet and was told
that they took Vita off the ventilator a couple of times during the
night and that she was not breathing on her own. I told him to
discontinue the procedure and to let her go.
I called the DNR here in Michigan and was told that Blue Green Algae
didn't usually appear this time of year and I told the agent that the
conditions were that of late summer in Michigan, very hot for the
last two days and reminded him that Blue Green Algae can appear at
any time. He told me not to panic or to alarm other people. I told
him that had someone else panicked, we wouldn't be having this
conversation right now.
Later that morning I found out from a neighbor that her two young
boys had vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramps last week and her
Doctor suggested she bring in a water sample. I do not know if she
did or not.
I also talked to a woman from a neighboring county whose neighbor's
dog ingested a lot of water from a pond and died suddenly a couple
weeks ago
