Yesterday was a time for smiles, and tears.
Several dozen Vivi searchers and devotees converged on Long Island yesterday afternoon for a luncheon in their honor. Intended as a special thank-you from Vivi's owner Jil Walton and her husband Rick Patterson, who flew in especially for the occasion, it was held at the lovely home of Honi and Carol Reisman.
Vivi's breeder, Bo Bengtson, and her co-owner, Paul Lepiane, were in China, but they were there in spirit.
The gathering was a chance to reminisce, and to socialize together in a different context: I don't believe I have ever had a chance to see Tina and Rosa when it didn't involve driving the bumpy streets of Queens. (Although Rick admitted he now considers no visit to New York complete without a visit to the Blue Bay Diner.) Honi, Carol and Jil set out a fabulous spread. (No plastic plates here, and salmon to die for!) Bonnie took time out during the gathering to check in on searchers for India the missing pharaoh in Alabama.
It was a bittersweet gathering, as it happened to fall on Vivi's fifth birthday. There was a lovely cake with Vivi's photo on it, and Jil said a very few words, because the tears were starting to well. But her message was heartfelt and profound: Thank you for everything you have done. What else is there to say?
Then Jil handed out some lovely thank-you gifts for all the searchers: Beautiful medallions with Vivi's photo, and the words "Keep the faith" on the back. (Now it was Bonnie who fought back tears.)
Imagine my surprise when Jil handed me a lovely plaque, with the same Vivi photo, as a thank-you for keeping Vivi's story alive. Actually, it is I who should be grateful, for meeting such an inspirational and dedicated group of animal lovers, near and far. Despite the blips and brickbats that hit this blog periodically, that basic sense of unconditional caring still remains.
I could have stayed for hours, talking dogs, catching up and soaking in the decor. (Anyone who can mix Mexican day of the dead statues in the same room with German borzoi porcelains has Martha beat in my book any day of the week.) But my three kids and four Ridgebacks were waiting at home, so I bid everyone goodbye.
As I left, I caught a glimpse of the photos Jil had passed around of the new 14-acre homestead she and Rick have bought in Montana. It's life: People move on, life changes.
There were also shots of Vivi's new sister, a black-faced Jack Russell mix with a mischievous glint in her eye. Jil said she hopes to extend their canine family with a deerhound in the future, and of course she wants a whippet. But she can't bring herself to get one, because she already has one, and somewhere deep inside, she hasn't let go of the possibility that Vivi is out there, sitting in someone's living room, waiting to be found.
I think some of us know exactly how she feels.
Happy birthday, Vivi.

A much deserved luncheon for our girls in NY.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for all you have done and continue to do for ViVi and other lost and sick animals.
Wonderful story but the tears are streaming down
my face right now. We can only hope that Vivi will
someday show her face or the person that has h er
will slip up
I am truly sorry that i missed th luncheon. I had a family gathering that I had to attend..
I still believe in my heart that she is out there & may be seen..
It has been a long haul & some great things have, come out of vivi getting lost. I know alot of people still do believe that she is out there.. But where? She may show up when least expected...
I have met such great people, who truly love anumals.
How wonderful that Rick and Jill did this for the New York searchers. They so deserved it and on Vivi's birthday as well. I am so glad that Rick and Jill are doing so well and I know that Vivi will one day return to them.
It is so wonderful that the searchers and Vivi's family had a lovely get together...to remember, to hope, and to cry. Vivi is still out there somewhere and she will show her beautiful face one day. Keeping faith and hope and love for our little whippet girl and her return to those that love her!
How sweet it is..Now I'M crying. You gals deserve every bit of praise given. I hope someone took pictures.
KEEPING THE FAITH IN CALIFORNIA FOR AS LONG AS IT TAKES. I LOVE YOU VIVI WHIPPET!
I haven't cried for a long time but this story really got me today. Tears are streaming down my face too.
How wonderful the searchers were honored for their tireless efforts and love for Vivi.
I can't even imagine the heartache Jil has gone through and I still have hope she'll get her wish of having Vivi back home to run with her sister on their new ranch.
So glad the NY searchers were honored for their tireless efforts in the search for Vivi. I will never give up hope that someday Vivi will be reunited with Jill and Rick. Vivi, you are gone but not forgotten.
Happy belated Birthday, Vivi.
Now I am crying all over again reading this story, it was hard enough being there yesterday crying. I think seeing the cake with Vivi's picture on it did us all in. Just ask Monica we were both still crying in the car going home. When Rosa and Tina walked in with Princess their whippet I almost fell on the floor thinking it was Vivi for a minute. I never knew people could shed so many tears for a little dog they never met. She has stolen our hearts. Beacuse of her so many animals have been saved and we discussed yesterday that we will never stop looking for her, she is out there somewhere waiting to be found.
I just read this and now am a soggy mess. It was so great of Jill and Rick to honor the Vivi crew this way. All of you are are awesome and my Animal Planet Heroes. I do believe Vivi is out there and will be found. Too many others have been found after long times. Vivi will be a miracle too. I can only imagine what Jill feels. I have faith that Vivi will be with her again.
Happy Birthday dear Vivi! I'm glad that the Vivi crew was honored for all their hard work. It's getting hard to see the computer screen right now so I'll close with by saying I'm still praying for that miracle.
I'm having hard time to get this post to be posted!!
Anyway, it was nice of them to honor Vivi and her fantastic supporters and out of towners!
Happy Birthday Vivi wherever you are...you are much loved by all of us!
By miracle you will be found and reunited with Jil and Rick!!
God bless you all.
Now I hope this post is working...!
Speaking of prayers--the shortest Psalm-
Oh, Lord, I am not proud,
There are things to great for me-
Like a child sleeps in his mother's arms,
So will I rest in Thee!
Father God, Bless and protect Team Vivi for doing Your will. Reward them with a sighting of Vivi;
and allow them to bring her back to Rick, and Jil.
In the meantime, until it is Your will, keep her safe, warm, and fed. Let more good things be done because of her. Heal Spit, Tara, Contessa, the food recall victims,Madison and all of our critically ill animals, and friends of animals. Comfort Betty in the loss of her father. Secure justice for Duke, and all unjustly accused and abused. Welcome into Paradise, all who must make the journey this night--let their animal companions greet them and lead them through the gates. We lift all of our petitions in confidence because You are in charge!(In Jesus' name) Amen!
As I read this wonderful article again about the party in Vivi's and the Vivi crew's honor, I was wondering if it should be printed in other newspapers or the dog magazines. It grabs the hearts of the readers (I'm crying again)and just maybe it would reach the right person or persons who have seen Vivi or have her; nag at someone's conscience.
Denise, you are number one in writing and Thank You again for giving us this space to help so many animals.
I am so glad Vivi's birthday and the footsoldiers were honored in this special way!
Regards,
Tara
WOW - I didn't know the celebration was planned so it is a nice surprise to know that Jil and Rick are thinking of the footsoldiers. I sure hope they all got to attend - they deserve it and what a nice momento to get a medallion with her sweet face on it.
Vivi's legacy will live on - she is like Barbaro is with horses - in a smaller way ----- doing so much for the good of animals and bringing so many people and causes together.
Happy Belated Birthday sweet girl ---- you are so loved and missed.
Happy belated, Sweetness.
"Happy Birthday Vivi" I will never give up hope in believing you will be found. I come from Westchester and in my drive to JFK on Saturday night to pick up my mom I found myself looking around areas of Queens as we drove by with Vivi in my mind all the time. Too many wonderful people have stopped their lives looking for her and helping strays along the way, they all need to be rewarded with a bit wet kiss from Vivi one day.
On Friday I posted a request for donations to rescue 6 horses and one
foal......Good news - the money was raised and they have been rescued
from the owner who was sending them to slaughter. Here's is the
latest note from Heart Break Ranch who rescued them.
Hi - Sorry this wasn't sooner but it was a long late day. We got all
of them picked up and settled in and then we had to look over the
little BOY and see what the problem is. He is a blue eyed cremello not
an Albino, he has an umbilical hernia, which is much better than a
septic cord infection.
The older stallion was bleeding and bit the owner twice, I didn't know
until after we left that the owner had hit him in the mouth. (They
were afraid of what I might do) but after the stallion got here, he
was a doll.
All were very hungry. The mother of Phobe is very thin. Only the large
stallion is halter broke, But I had to get a halter on Momma and she
she was a doll. Little Phobe is a cutie.
The other four horses are just untouched, but I think a little work an
then they will be fine. The two younger studs will be first to go for
castration, after Phobes hernia is corrected.
Their hooves are in terrible condition and length.
These horses were very hungry. They did not understand when I tried to
give them pelleted feed. (John said they had caught on and it was all
gone this AM) I need to worm them all and start from scratch on
vaccinations.
I was very upset about this man hitting the stallion, but just as we
arrived the two younger studs ran right over the top of him and
smashed him in the mud. "paybacks are hell" We acted like we didn't
see it, but it was hard to keep the smiles off our faces. The only
thing hurt was his pride.
They were perfect angels on the way home.
Thanks to all of you they are now in a safe, happy place with food!
I took some pictures and will send them as soon as I can send them to
upload. I will get more later and updates too.
Thanks again you are a blessing.
That is absolutely wonderful news Kathy.
I just got a thank you letter from "Last Chance Corral" for a Feb. donation I made for the little foals..Out of 200 rescued babies, they lost 4, giving them a 2% morality rate. The vet hospitals lloose 35% of the animals in this category, so Last Chance is doing a great job. They also said they spent over $10,000 on milk along
We on the Vivi blog who donate, are considered "memember of Team ViVi.!
The donations are tax exempt btw.
Correction on my 8:18 post:::It should read,"they spent over $10,000 on milk ALONE."
“I will both lie down and sleep in peace” (Ps. 4:8).
Father God, We will renew our love for You and our hopes for Vivi, and all the animals, and friends we have made here. Rescue the lost, and heal the sick.
Give justice to those who are accused. Bless and prosper Vivi's angels in NYC, and all the workers on behalf of animals anywhere. Welcome into Paradise all who will make the journey tonight, let them be met by all of their companions, humans and animals who have gone before. We lift our prayers in confidence because we know You are in charge! (In Jesus' name.) Amen.
INDIA THE PHARAOH HOUND WHO WAS LOST AFTER AN AUTO ACCIDENT IN ALABAMA HAS BEEN FOUND! I'm so very happy and I'm sure a lot of you who have been sending flyers etc. are too! Joy, joy, happy, happy! Yahooo India!
What great news, Rooooby! How did they do it? Vivi, we will find you!
Bonnie reported that she had been enclosed in a back yard with a tall fence for several days before the man keeping her looked in the paper and saw that she was listed as missing. She'll probably report the whole story tomorrow. There's a web page that has a brief report (but I don't have the URL at hand.)
Hooray. Another lost baby returned. Just shows what posting and advertising can do. This is so great.
Hooray for all the horses being saved..
Hooray for India being caught also..
We need some more good news here...
India - welcome home, darling!! at least there is one pile of flyers, mailings, and emails i can throw out. FEELS GREAT!! sleep and be happy, India :)
More good news:
The owner of Happy Endings Animal Rescue received enough donations to save their home/rescue and keep the last rescues until May 25th to find homes. There will be a large adoption day this weekend, and prayfully many will find good homes then.
This person has done so much for abused, hurt, etc. animals, I was so happy they would not lose their home because of the drop in donations.
Thank you to anyone who donated. You are great!
Interesting thing I found out about Otis, the abused Greyhound..(Wayne Allen Dean) will spend two years in jail over his abuse of the dog::::
"He also may have been influenced by the nearly 4,000 e-mails, letters, cards and petition signatures Mayer handed him."
He, meaning the JUDGE..Do you guys see that, nearly 4,000 things for Otis! Thanks everyone who helped put this scum bag in jail!
Hi Everyone - today is the day I need you to call if you haven't already.....PLEASE - if you have just five minutes
PLEASE READ THIS AND THEN CALL - THEY WILL VOTE ON 4/25
IMPORTANT STRATEGY -- US SENATE COMMITTE VOTE ON WEDNESDAY
Hello everyone:
Please read these very important updates and please make (3) quick
phone calls (or faxes) to the Senators in this email.
This is a crucial time to stay involved, as our Congress needs to know
we are "still here" - the pro-slaughter campaign is very organized and
are to fighting our Bills, as they stand to lose millions of dollars.
Thanks for your passion to END this atrocity...Our show of support for
Bill S.311 before next week's session is so critical.
IMPORTANT FEDERAL UPDATE -
The Senate Committee on Science, Commerce & Transportation has a
planned "mark-up" session on Wednesday, April 25th for S.311, The
American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. This means the committee may
debate, amend, or rewrite the proposed legislation, and they may also
vote on whether or not to send the bill to the entire Senate for its
consideration.
OUR STRATEGY -
Liz Craddock (she is assigned to Bill S.311 in Senator Mary Landrieu's
office) provided the following status & strategy for us):
Bill S.311 is currently residing in the Science, Commerce &
Transportation Committee. There are 11 of 23 committee members who
will vote "YES" for this Bill to be released for a vote on the Senate
floor. That means one more vote is needed for this to happen
Wednesday, April 25th - We are ONE VOTE SHORT.
Since this vote is "too close to call" as far as a majority vote,
there is a quick, simple strategy for us until Tuesday, April 24th
(this request to call the Senators below comes directly from Senator
Landrieu's office).
PLEASE CALL THE FOLLOWING SENATORS ON THIS COMMITTE AND ASK THEM TO
SUPPORT BILL S.311:*
1. Senator Bill Nelson, FL - (202)-224-5274 or Fax: (202)-228-2183
2. Senator Jim DeMint, SC - (202)-224-6121 or Fax: (202)-228-5143
3. Senator John Rockefeller, W. VA - (202)-224-6472 or Fax: (202)-224-7665
* These Senators were co-sponsors of these Bills in 2006 (and have not
co-sponsored this year) or they are "fence-sitters. "
NOTE: I will fax each of these offices our anti-horse slaughter
booklet and our flyers.

Well it's a beautiful thing for Jill and Rick to have come in honor of Team Vivi and Vivi herself on her 5th birthday ! Thanks to ALL of you for being part of this journey. I remain optimistic that Vivi will be found safe and go home with Jill and Rick ... until then, keeping the faith always!!! My Computer crashed again but I miss you guys and can't wait till I get it fixed.
come on guys!!! Kathy needs our help with the horses. i have something i wrote up in case you need an example of how short the letter has to be. just fax it off. it takes LESS THAN 1 MINUTE to do 3 of them. we have to save the horses too - they are galant and defenseless!!
Thanks Darlene - yes I do need you guys help --- just three short faxes and all you have to say is please support Senate Bill S-311 - please vote YES for the horses. It's that simple and the benefits are so big
Okay - you twisted my arm. Darlene, if you can send me a sample of that leter, I will send out
3 faxes today.
Darlene
Can you send me the letter you are using and I will fax them today
Thank you guys ----- Darlene - you must really have some pull Weenie Queen :) Thanks
Hey Kathy - she's da "Boss Lady"!! LOL.
First of all I want to thank all of you for putting up with my many many requests for calls, faxes and money for the horses. Here is the latest note re: Val at Heart Break Ranch ---- she is the one that successfully got the 6 horses and foal from the guy that was going to send them off to 'you know where' but we, along with the FOB's helped raise the money last week to save them. Now....they need to eat
Dear All,
Val at Break Heart Ranch needs our help in caring for the 7 horses, including one tiny week old foal named FOBE (Fans of Barbaro Everywhere), named after the FOB's who saved him from slaughter!!! The first foal named after us FOB's!! We all did a great job raising the $1900 to get the horses out of the terrible situation (to pay for the horses and transpo only), the owner was going to kill the baby because he didn't think the kill buyers would pay money for him! But they are now safe....but needs lots of care!!!
The baby will need an operation, but has to get in shape to get it. There are a few geldings who need...well you know what....and their feet are in terrible shape...the list goes on. These are things that MUST be done, not luxuries for the poor guys. They were mostly starved and treated like crap for sure. So because we know about it and saved them, we have to go all the way and make sure they eat and get what they need.
Go to http://forums.prospero.com/timwoolley/messages?msg=7827.134 (message 134) to see pictures. That baby FOBE is really cute! The others need TLC that Val will give them for sure.
Go to Val's website and donate what you can....www.heartbreakranch.com. Val is a sweetheart, she has them under quarantine right now and has wonderful foster parents that will take them, but she needs our help.
Thanks!!!
We need $2625 for all that needs to happen for them!!
Can I ask a favor of all of you? Please go to http://www.angelacreshorsehavenrescue.com/info/display?PageID=2721 and vote for Colorado TB Rescue (the very first one on the list) This is a small horse rescue in Colorado and they are trying to raise funds.
The Fans of Barbaro have committed up to $5000 towards building supplies for a chosen rescue. CTR would use it to build a safe 3 acre pasture with wooden fencing & a 12 x 24' run in shed ,which would allow us to rescue many more horses.
Currently we are overfull and can not accept any more horses. Please vote for CTR to get the funds committed by the FOB's.
http://www.coloradotbrescue.org/
I just voted and ctr is way behind. They need a lot more votes.
(Isaiah 43-1-7)
thus says the LORD,
He who created you, O Jacob,
He who formed you, O Israel:
Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are Mine.
For I am the LORD your God,
you are precious in my sight,
and honoured, and I love you.
Everyone who is called by my name,
whom I created for my glory,
I formed and made.’
Father Creator, Author of all life, help us to remember that You have formed us and all that lives, and that we are precious in Your sight. Let us call on You as children to a Father, and let us know that we are heard. Let Vivi hear Your voice and go to a volunteer who will take her home. If she is in someone's home help them to recognize who she is, and to make the decision to return her to Jil. Bless and protect all of the lost and stolen animals we are praying for--You know their names. Heal Spit and all of our sick animals. Lay Your hands on all the victims of the food recall--to each and every pig, and let them get well. Send Madison the miracle that she needs. Bring justice to Duke, and all the falsely accused. Comfort Betty.
Protect and honor Vivi's NYC angels. Welcome all who make the journey to paradise tonight, and let their companions who have gone ahead meet them at Your gates. We sleep well knowing You are in charge!
Amen.
Kathy, is it www.heartbreakranch.com or http://www.breakheartranch.com/. I was unable to locate the first URL, but found the second one. Before I send any money, I want to make sure I am donating to the correct organization. Please let me know.
I'm sitting here in tears after reading about the luncheon on Vivi's birthday - but they aren't the same kind of desperate tears as before - I feel in my heart that we'll see Vivi back with Jill.
For all those searching, a special blessing to you.
UPDATE ON MADISON - A GOOD REPORT!!!!!
April 22
I know...you all have been waiting for an update. I was doing pretty well there for a while, but it got hectic this past week. So, here I am to update!
The Rappaport Coma Scale...I don't know how many people have been reading the blog long enough to remember this test, but when Madison was in San Antonio, the therapists would do this test on madison to chart her progress. She really didn't make much because it's a much slower process than week to week. The test consists of 11 items to come up with a score to rate her coma status. You can see the test hereat this address:
http://www.tbims.org/combi/cnc/cncform.pdf
Each thing tested gets a number score based on what she does. At the end a score is given. When Madison was discharged from San Antonio, she was at a 2.6. If you look at the ranges at the above website, from 2.01 - 2.89 is a Moderate Coma. As you can see, she is on the higher end of this. Last week, Madison's therapists tested her again. This time, her score was a 1.1!! Referring to the chart, .90 - 2.00 is in the near coma range! She went down a level in the first year. I think it's wonderful. Sure, it's slower than I would like but it's still progress. The three areas she did not score well on are:
Command Reponsivity (patient responding to a command) We asked Madison to do several things but she didn't do any of them. This is just something she cannot do yet.
Threat - for the test we had to briskly move our hand toward her eyes like we were going to hit her eyes. She should blink. She did not.
Olfactory (smell) For this, we put a strong chemical smell under her nose. We looked for any sort of response like turning her head, change of facial expression, etc. She did none of these.
The good thing is she definitely improved on a lot of the areas she "failed" last May. I am not giving up hope that she can come through this and start responding!
Today was a busy day. We went to therapy this morning which happened to be a very good day for Madison. She smiled a lot and was vocalizing a lot too. She doesn't form any words or specific sounds, but she was using her voice. This is really good. I hope it continues! After therapy, we had her check-up with the neurologist. His words..."she's doing great." No sign of any seizures and no reason to increase the seizure medicine again. In the future we are talking about doing Botox in her arms to help the spasticity there. To end the day, she had another doctor's appointment with her pedi rehab doctor. Her main concerns were Madison's spine curve which we are going to the orthopedist for on May 1st, the spasticity in her arms which was addressed in the morning and the lack of support in her neck. We are working on it daily and are getting a neck brace for times that we are not working with her. All in all a good visit!
I guess that's about it for now. I will update when I have more in a few days. Until then, my friends...
B+ for Madison!
I'm keeping the poster of vivi darlene gave me up in my car, you never know. joan
My truck is still loaded with Vivi Flyers & posters
& hand out cards.. I will not get rid of anything yet either...

I tired to post an email from India, the Pharaoh Hound's owner, but got the dreaded notice..
India's owner said after the accident, India was spotted several times, these were confirmed sightings.
To make a long story short, she was rescued by a man who had her in a pen with his "farm" dog. The man found an ad in the paper about India and called.
India is now home, she had lost 5 lbs and had a tick on her neck and after a trip to the vets, it was learned that she has a broken rear toe, right foot and a torn pad on her front foot. She hops on two legs, but is doing very well.
The SUV the dogs were in is gone as is the travel trailer, but India is safe and home again. The gal thanks everyone for thier strong support and kind words.
Meri-Lou - it is the http://www.breakheartranch.com thank you SO MUCH :)

I haven't checked the blog in a while and learned it was just Vivi's birthday a few days ago. Belated happy birthday wishes to the little sweetie. What a nice thing to do do have a dinner in her and the searchers' honor. Keep the faith.
Images and thoughts of this dog have been in my mind almost constantly the last 4 days or so and I could not figure out why. Usually it is a while between images and thoughts of her come up, when there is no news for a long time. Maybe because it was her birthday.
May she return to us all who love her so, and especially to her owners who obviously love and miss her still. And bless everyone who is still out there looking and believing.
New Recall 4-26-07
Precautionary Rice Protein Recall: Drs. Foster & Smith Adult Dry Lite Dog and Adult Dry Lite Cat Food
Rice protein concentrate has been indicated as a possible source of melamine recently found in pet food products. As a precautionary measure Wilbur-Ellis company, the supplier of rice protein concentrate, is voluntarily recalling all lots of rice protein concentrate. We received notification from the manufacturer today, April 25, 2007, suggesting we issue a precautionary recall.
Two of our products: Adult Lite Dry Dog (Item #'s 14178, 14179, 14180, 14262, 14263) and Adult Lite Dry Cat foods (Item #'s 12855, 12856, 13864, 13865) contain rice protein concentrate. Only the Adult Lite Dry Dog and Adult Lite Dry Cat foods contain rice protein concentrate.
Preliminary test results for melamine contamination have been negative. Final test results from the FDA are expected within two weeks. Please check the Adult Lite Dry Dog food or the Adult Lite Dry Cat food product pages on the DrsFosterSmith.com website for any updates.
I've started another candle site for Gail T's little Crested, Contessa. Contessa has had surgery for a tumor and needs all the prayers you guys can give her.

This is the first page of the above site I just sent. It's more complete.
And yet another link to contaminated pet foods. Are you guys sick of this? I'm totally disgusted with the lack of the U.S. Govt. to check foreign products..
Disgusting!http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2003681015_webfoodqa26.html
S311 (anti horse slaughter bill) was voted on and released from the Senate Commerce committee. This means it is now eligible to be put on the senate calendar for a full vote.
This is GREAT news though just a step in the process.
I am sure Kathy will have lots more information on this.
I still cannot shake the feeling that something is going on with Vivi. Anyone have the same feeling or any ideas?
SOME GOOD NEWS
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR YOUR CALLS AND FAXES --- WE ARE ALMOST THERE :)
FOR IMMEDIANTE RELEASE
Horse Slaughter Bill Advances in the US Senate
WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 25, 2007) – The Commerce, Science and
Transportation Committee of the US Senate today held a mark-up for S.
311, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (AHSPA), voting 15
to 7 in favor of sending the bill to be considered before the full US
Senate.
Dispelling misguided arguments from AHSPA opponents, Senator Barbara
Boxer (D-CA) argued, "We have this law in place in California… since
1998. The people voted for it, and the state has seen no increase in
neglect and no abandoned horses – and this is from the largest state
in the Union."
The three remaining foreign-owned slaughter plants in the United
States – located in Illinois and Texas – have been shut down
temporarily by recent court decisions. However, passage of the bill
is critical to ensure horses are protected from slaughter forever,
and that they are not exported elsewhere to be killed for the same
purpose.
"Until Congress acts, horses are being hauled under horrible
conditions across the border to Mexico and Canada, where they are
brutally slaughtered, " said Chris Heyde, deputy legislative director
of the Society for Animal Protective Legislation. "The AHSPA is their
only hope."
Two years ago, the Senate voted overwhelmingly to stop horse
slaughter for a year, and last year, the House passed the bill.
Unfortunately, Congress went out of session before the Senate could
vote on the measure. The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act,
sponsored in this session by Senators Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and John
Ensign (R-NV), will ensure that the practice of horse slaughter for
human consumption is stopped permanently.
Before the measure went up for a vote, Senator Ensign stated, "There
is no question that this bill will pass in this Committee, in the
full Senate and in the House of Representatives, finally stopping
horse slaughter."
The Society for Animal Protective Legislation, the Animal Welfare
Institute's legislative arm, is the unsurpassed leader in obtaining
laws to benefit animals in need, including the protection of domestic
and wild horses.

Hi Gang - thanks Karen for posting the greyt news for me before I got around to it ------Here is today's strategy:
Anti Horse Slaughter Strategy
CONGRATULATIONS ON A HUGE SUCCESS AND A JOB WELL DONE!!!
As you all know, S311 was voted on and released from the Senate Commerce committee. This means it is now eligible to be put on the senate calendar for a full vote. While this is WONDERFUL news, our job is far from over. There are many things that can unfold now but today is a time to celebrate!!! We will explain all of that in the near future.
We will be receiving new directives and will pass them on shortly. In the meantime, the best thing to do is to continue to try to get co-sponsors. Both the senate and the house should be more receptive now that this first step has proven successful. You already know who voted yes today so please do NOT call those senators. And once again, do NOT call those that are already co-sponsors in the senate or the house.
For now, savor your victory and know that each and everyone of you played a major part in getting this bill out of committee!! You guys are doing a magnificent job. We WILL see this through to the end and we WILL win!!!
Thanks again for all your hard work and dedication.

URGENT BREEDER ALERT
BEWARE PUPPY MILK REPLACERS AND WEANING FORMULA
by Robert Jay Russell, Ph.D., Coton de Tulear Club of America President

April 26th, 2007. I was monitoring a livestock email list today when I noticed a post by one of the members who was looking for milk replacer for her kids (goats). She wrote:
Recently I had some kids born and mother refused them. Not having
enough milk from mother to feed these kids I went to Milk
Replacer. I usually use Land-O-Lakes Kid Milk Replacer but could not
find any anywhere. I went to Tractor Supply Company (TSC) and purchased two 10# bags of MannaPro UNIMILK. I have since lost one kid. I happened to be talking to a friend in Indiana about
what happened and she asked me what replacer I was using, so I told
her...This is when I found out that brand had a RECALL notice. I
searched through the information and found that INDEED the bags I
purchased were part of that recall. I Called the TSC store and they
had no idea anything had a recall on it. I printed the info out and
the next day I took everything into the store to prove to them. The
recall has been in place since 3-30-07. All the Unimilk was still on
the shelf, not taking my word for it. I showed the manager the
printout and he searched the TSC website and found no alerts. He
said he would give me my money back for both bags but he couldn't do
anything about the kid. Yesterday I stopped at a friends house and
found they she was using UNIMILK for a calf... She got it at TSC
about 2 weeks ago. Why wasn't TSC informed? And then when they
were? Why didn't they do anything about it?
Dr. Russell continues:
I went on the Manna Pro corporation web site today and had a very difficult time finding a tiny button which stated "Information about Manna Pro Milk Replacer" (nothing about "Alert" or "Recall" or Danger"). This is what that MannaPro information page stated:
Manna Pro has a heritage of quality and takes pride in maintaining the highest quality standards for the products it produces and sells under the Manna Pro brand name.
Very recently, a few customers have reported that, when mixed with water, the Unimilk they purchased turns light grey in color rather than the characteristic creamy white. As we have investigated these consumer calls, we have identified that a single batch of Unimilk is affected by this issue.

Dr. Russell continues:
Note that the MannaPro recall mentions nothing about poisoned gluten nor does it mention any report to the FDA. However, it is reasonable to suggest that this company may be quietly attempting to cover up another case of Chinese gluten/protein concentrate melamine poisoning. Manna Pro makes livestock feed for farmers AND inexpensive pet food most often sold at farm supply stores (but note: The Tractor Supply Company is located in suburban and even urban areas throughout the US and is popular with suburbanites, not just farmers).
What is significant here is the penetration of possible highly toxic food into the category of "Milk Replacer" and "Weaning Formula" for dogs and cats. Many CTCA Code of Ethics Breeders and others use milk replacers and weaning formulae routinely, often as a bridge between mother's milk and puppy food at weaning time. So BEWARE!!! Check ingredient lists carefully.
AN ALTERNATIVE: you need not use a commercial weaning formula. Instead, blend milk with some finely blended puppy food or dog food that you've checked to make sure is NOT on any recall list and does NOT contain grain products (rice, corn, wheat, soy). This, in fact, is probably a far better formulae for weaning and milk replacement.
AND EVERYONE: check ingredient lists with care. Even milk replacers may contain protein concentrates, grain powders or glutens!
This crisis is far from over.
HAS ANYONE SEEN ANYTHING ABOUT NUTRO NATURAL CHOICE, SENIOR AND SMALL BITES LAMB AND RICE FORMULA BEING RECALLED? THIS IS DRY FOOD...ANYONE?
I WAS TOLD IT WAS MENTIONED ON THE ITCHMO SITE, BUT I CANT FIND IT........I'M VERY WORRIED, THATS WHAT I NOW FEED MY DOGS.
