Travel tips with staying power
By DENISE FLAIM
Whippet breeder Bo Bengtson of Ojai, Calif., has been through more than enough in the past year.
Last February, a dog he bred and loved, a brindle-and-white whippet named Vivi who is now arguably the most famous show dog in the world, escaped from her crate en route to a Delta Airlines flight after competing at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.
Bengtson knew this year's show (which concluded on Tuesday night with a English springer spaniel named James crowned Best in Show) would be deja vu all over again, as concerned friends and fanciers asked over and over about Vivi and whether she has been sighted again. (Not for several months.)
But the replay Bengtson was unprepared for took place two weeks earlier, when he went to Los Angeles International Airport to send a 6-month-old whippet named Griffin -- who also happens to be Vivi's nephew -- to a friend in Florida.
"It was the first time since Vivi's disappearance almost exactly a year ago that I shipped a dog. ... I was pretty nervous about the experience and had spent a lot of time preparing for it," Bengtson wrote in an e-mail that has circulated widely on the Internet. Among his precautions: several plastic "zip-ties" to secure the crate door and signs with Griffin's name and the words "DO NOT OPEN!"
The American Airlines staff was "helpful and considerate," Bengtson recalls. "They actually remembered the Vivi incident, even though that involved another airline and a different airport."
The airline checked the crate, the paperwork was signed, the zip-ties were secured, and Griffin chomped contentedly on his chew toy as his crate was loaded on a cart and wheeled away.
Then, as a relieved Bengtson headed toward the door, he overheard the cart-pushing employee say: "Security wants to open the crate again."
The zip-ties were snipped, and Griffin was removed and placed in Bengtson's arms as the crate was scrutinized.
"The inspection took place in an open building, with hundreds of passengers milling about, less than 6 feet from an open door with very heavy traffic outside," Bengtson notes. "I still get weak at the knees thinking about what could have happened if we had not been present," and if a decidedly whippet-unsavvy security staff had taken matters -- not to mention Griffin -- into their own hands.
An estimated half-million companion animals fly every year, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. Most of these animals travel in the cabin, and are processed at security checkpoints along with their humans. But if you fly an animal as "checked luggage" -- that is, in the airplane's belly -- there is one acronym you need to know: TSA, for the Transportation Security Administration.
TSA spokeswoman Amy Kudwa says the agency checks "100 percent of checked luggage" -- animals included. During the inspection, carriers are swabbed and checked for explosives, although Kudwa says Bengtson's experience is not typical: "It is my understanding that TSA does not open the carriers" unless an owner is present, or unless security concerns prompted a more thorough search. Once the TSA inspection is complete, a holographic sticker is placed on the crate indicating that it has been checked.
At LAX, Kudwa says, the majority of TSA screenings are done in the airport lobby.
How and when TSA inspections take place "depend on what airport you're in," warns Susan Kerwin-Hagen, coordinator for Midwest Airlines' Premier Pet program. In her Milwaukee airport, for example, "the TSA agent asks the owner to remain with the pet until the carrier is examined." The dog is then also examined, with the owner holding the dog's head while the TSA agent "pats it down."
The key to avoiding a scenario such as Bengtson's is to ask to stay with your animal until the TSA inspection is done.
Bengtson -- who wonders if Vivi was lost as part of a botched security check -- certainly will. And he's determined to push for changes in how airports process animals, including requiring crate inspections only in secure areas.
"It's actually surprising that more pets aren't lost at airports," he muses, noting that from now on, any dogs he flies will keep their collars on, even though there is a slight risk of it getting caught on something. "Many dogs are nervous while being shipped and would bolt at the first opportunity to get out of the crate."
Kerwin-Hagen reminds that exposing animals to crates and carriers at an early age is vital, so they aren't panic-striken if they ever have to travel in one.
As for Griffin, he "got to Florida safe and sound, not in the least upset by his experience," concludes Bengtson, who, though he stayed on terra firma, can't say the same for himself.

Now that Jet Blue is creating a Passenger Bill of Rights, how about a companion animal Bill of Rights as well?
I hope we can move to this thread. I have dial-up internet now and cannot get into the larger one we have been using.

Sharon, could you please say a special prayer for my sweet kitty, Booger (aka Socks)? He went to the Rainbow Bridge today while I was at work. I came home to find him gone. I am so sad and have been crying so hard that I was not here when my baby of 14 years passed away. Bo, Tinkerbell and I are really grieving hard.
Booger was so special. My son, Tommy, came home from work one night telling me there was a small kitten at the bottom of our stairs. He later confessed he brought the kitten home from Walgreen's. Booger kept hanging around the dumpster, and Tommy kept feeding him.
I made him a nice bed outside the door (upstairs) with food and water, and he was very happy. He stayed there a couple of nights, and the next morning I got the cat carrier, put him in it, and off we went to the vet for the usual tests and shots before I would bring him in around my Siamese, Kahn.
He got a clean bill of health, his shots, a good cleaning, and came home the next day. That afternoon Tommy was so upset when he did not see the kitten after school. He called me, and I had to spill the beans that he now had a new kitten.
He named Booger Socks at first, but Booger kept chewing telephone cords so I called him a "Booger Bear." Soon we all called him Booger.
I hope my grandparents were up there at the Rainbow Bridge to welcome Booger today. I feel like they probably were. Rest in Peace my sweet little Booger. My heart hurts so much tonight because you are gone.
Kathleen:
I'm really sorry about Booger as I said. It's a hard thing when a little friend dies. I lit a candle for him, in fact 2 candles.
I hope everyone moves to this blog. I'm also having trouble getting into the other one.
Kathleen, I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of Booger. Treasure all your memories you have of him. I'm going to light a candle, too.
Kethleen: I am so sorry to hear about your precious kitty. I will also light a candle. Prayers and hugs from Texas
Hi, Rosa. If you could please get this to the "Vivi Blog", I would sincerely appreciate it!
To All My Friends & Rescuers:
Rosa, the precious soul that she is, has called me daily with your updates and all the help the Vivi Blog has been giving while I was in Florida, looking for Annie. You all will never, ever know how much I appreciate each and every one of you. Your prayers, support and love really came across to me while I was in the "jungles of Florida" trying to bring Annie home. For those of you that faxed, called, prayed - THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! Rosa would call me and relay to me the experiences you had finding Vivi and other lost dogs and those ideas really helped. And she would tell me how the Blog was asking about me and praying for me and with me in spirit. When I felt alone out there, trying to organize search parties and trying to stay on my best game - I knew you all were there.
If I never get the chance to email you or meet you, please always remember how you stepped forward and helped Annie and me while I was looking for her and how very special you are!
The search is continuing with Katy - Florida Manager of EARS Rescue. She is experienced in knowing that this will be a painstakingly process to bring Annie home safely. She is working with several of her volunteers who specifically deal with this kind of situation with a lost dog who has come from a mill and does not want to be caught. I have every confidence in her.
I am sending you the biggest hug from here in Michigan. I can never thank you all enough.
Warmly,
Vicki L Nixon

Kathleen,
With Moses by my side, I did a ceremony for Booger with sage and candles last night. With prayers and music, we ushered him into heaven - the moon was full and bright - he is in God's arms.
Eternal Father, we bring to You Kathleen and her family in their grief in the loss of Booger and ask for courage for them to bear it. We bring you our thanks for Booger who lived among Kathleen and her sons and gave freely of his love. We put their friend and companion Booger into Your loving hands. Give us eyes to see how Your love embraces all creatures and every living thing speaks to us of your love. Amen. (adapted from Belief.net)
A reminder, I am posting Vivi visions on the thread "On the Outside Looking In" for all that care to read them. I do my best to add insight when I can as some I don't understand others are clear.
I hope everyone has a good weekend and that Annie is found soon.
Kathleen - my heart ached for Booger's passing and for your loss. Boogers ceremony was so beautiful and the moon was full with a lovely yellow ring around it - the sky was so clear - the stars twinkled, and I just know your precious kitty was ushered into heaven on the wings of angels. Moses and I chanted with Shamanic drum music playing - that was around 7 pm PST. I hope you can feel Booger's peace and love in heaven as he had the same with you here on earth.
Everyone, thank you so much for your kind words, prayers and thoughts. Sedona, I could feel the peace as I tried to go to sleep last night. So your sage and ceremony had to be working. Thank that big guy Mo for helping too. I cried myself to sleep with Tinkerbell licking my tears some.
Sharon, thank you so much for the beautiful prayer. And Ruby, thank you starting candles for my precious baby too. This means so much. Thank all of you for the candles as well. It is nice to know a group of people who can share my pain so well right now.
Booger was picked up today by Shelby County Dead Animal Control and will be cremated today. The man even stopped and said a prayer over Booger with me, and gave me a hug before he left. He even had tears in his eyes too. He promised he would take special care of Booger personally and handle him with much respect and love. He told me he could tell how Booger was loved by what a beautiful kitty he was.
Then he opened the door and the sun was shining so beautiful and such a nice warmth with a slight breeze. He told me he felt animals send us messages, and this was a message from Booger that he was okay and happy. I just closed my eyes, thought of Booger, and felt the wind on my face was his sweet rubs and kitty kisses he liked to give me.
Love Kathleen, Tinkerbell, Bo and Sweet Booger
I gave this suggestion to Kathleen - and I hope it is okay to post it here: When a beloved pet (or person) dies, it is helpful to create an alter in their memory - I prefer buying a small pot and planting a few succulents - because they are easy to grow - and place the plants outside - I place mine on my patio where I can meditate on my beloved pet and cry when needed (if where you live has good weather - if not then inside) and light a candle and burn incense over it - and dedicate the living plants to your beloved pet - it helps with healing and is a reminder that your love continues and lives here on earth as well as in heaven too.
I'm so glad you have peace today. What a beautiful sign from God and what a kind man to be so caring - an angel unaware.
Definitely an Angel from God, Sedona. I'm going to buy a beautiful thank you card and write him a long note letting him know how much this meant to me. Then I'll call the phone number and ask how I can address it to send to him also.
It meant SO MUCH to me. I am so thankful to God who sent me such a warm and caring human being to help me this morning. It made saying my goodbye a bit easier.
Kathleen, I'm only saw now that everyone switched threads. I am so sorry for the loss of your precious Booger. That can be one of the worst heartaches. I will light candles and keep you in my prayers.
Oh Kathleeen, I am so sorry about Booger I did not
know
I read where 6 (?) Yorkies were stolen in LA from a home at gunpoint - the people ran ads to sell the puppies - the bad guys took all five puppies and one adult - each valued at $2,500 apiece - a warning against having strangers in your home I suppose. The owners are heartbroken -
Thank you so much Kay and SueG. I was telling Sedona I am waiting for some kind of direction about a memorial for my sweet Booger. I want to do something in his name. I think it may be a donation to the spay/neuter group here in Memphis I mentioned. They could sure use the help I know.
Sharon, I was thinking it would sure be nice to have a special prayer for the people who have suffered from these tornados and also the baseball team who have lost many and many injured from that accident in Atlanta.
My heart has also been very heavy for these parents who have lost their children at the school and in the bus accident. Thanks Sharon. You say the sweetest prayers.
I read it, too, where the Yorkies were stolen - 4 puppies & the adult which was the owner's pet. Can you imagine seeing someone drive off like that with your dogs put in a bag?
Yes, and you've been held up at gunpoint at your front door for them too - terrible. Gives me the shivers!
They had the Yorkie kidnapping on the news, CNN..It showed 3 guys, one with a black plastic garbage bag, chasing the the pups around..I guess the owners had a video camera set up..The kidnappers had the people who owned the Yorkies, on the floor. I hope they find them.
Kathleen,
I am very sorry for your loss. You and Booger as well as Bo and Tinkerbell are in my thoughts and prayers.
Kathleen - i just read - i am very very sorry for your loss, my friend. Keep the memories close - he will never be gone that way. I wish there was something i could do to make you feel better but i suppose i can leave that in Tink's lap. i wish only the best for you :)
BTW - i will being going to PA until thurs. my friend's Dad passed yesterday so John and I and our 6 will be going to lend our support. i will try to check in while there if i can. here's hoping all of the lost ones get home while i am gone.
Can't imagine some hoodlum chasing puppies around with a black plastic bag - gads......
MSNBC has a video clip of it - scary - poor little puppies and poor older girl doggie.
hopefully if they have it on film, they will be able to find these idiots
They had the story about those poor Yorkies on the MSNBC caption. How savage can people get?
Any Vivi news or any of our lost pups?
Hi my friends, Well I guess I am not a guardian
angel for the Golden Retriever. My friend lied to
me about this dog, and I cannot take him into my
home to foster. I feel terrible but I don't like being lied to. This Golden has terrible Epilepsy
and that is why the owners turned h im into a shelter. What cowards !!! Also I was told that the
dog was a female spayed, and it turns out it is
an 8 yr old un neutered m ale. Bash me if you want
but I cannot take this dog. I have been so upset
all day, but after having fosters in my home for
almost 17 yrs, I have to be realistic about the
chance of this dog being adopted. My heart hearts
tonight for this decision I had to make
SueG: Save your so-called aching heart. You are a terrible person. I hope none of your animals ever end up epilepsy or any family member ever gets it. Most likely someone in your life has it, but is hiding it. Good thing to since you are so ignorant. Why don't you take the time to learn about it???? Did you bother to find out if the dog's seizures are controlled with medication? What kind of medication is he on? How often are the seizures? What kind of seizures are they? Do you even know what it means to have epilepsy? When things are easy you want to be a guardian angel, but when it seems like a sacrifice, forget it. And fyi I have 2 special needs dogs myself. So don't even bother to try to turn it around on me wny I'm not taking him. You don't deserve to have any animals. You absolutely disgust me. Screw you.
Hey Screw you, I had an epileptic dog for 17 yrs
so I know what it is all about. I do not need you
to bash me, why don't you take the dog then. I cannot save every dog, I feel terrible about this
dog but f... you for bashing me. and who are you
that you cannot even post your name, Chicken Shit !!
I can't understand why some of the crap that is showing up on these Vivi blogs is allowed. Nothing seems to be done! Doesn't Newsday care? Doesn't Denise F. care? The 8:41 post is one of the worst I've seen and I've been attacked a lot lately.
SueG, ignore DISGUSTED..He/she is an obvious mean, uncaring person, shooting his mouth off. You did what you felt you had to do. Consider the source, you said it all, they person can't even post a name, he's hiding behind a stupid screen name. I'm disgusted!
Kathleen--So sorry to hear about your kitty! What a terrible shock :(. I'm sure Booger is in kitty heaven romping with my kitties who are on the other side, Sid and Oscar.
Sue G: What a tough decision to have to make. That dog's owners are the ones who are terrible people. How could they abandon him like that.
Sue - I know the decision you had to make was hard enough, please don't let insensitive morons make you feel worse. Take the remarks from where they come. You don't need to justify your decision to anyone, especially to a nameless coward.
Thanks Ruby and Jessa for the kind words, My heart
hurts tonight and I don't need people like Disgust
add salt to the wound. I wish Denise would monitor
this board a b it more. From now on I will only
post to m y friends, and not to the general board.
I love all my friends that I have met on this board
for the last year, but this is BS to have to put up
with these a..holes for too long
Sue, I was considering adopting an epileptic dog earilier this year, and I thought long and hard about it. I still feel really bad about my decision not to go through with it. But with my work comittments, there was no way I could give the dog medication at the exact same times every day, which was one of the requirements. Don't stop posting just because of one stupid jerk. I read the board but rarely post, but I couldn't let this pass without comment.

And I still think about that dog and wonder how he is doing.
Paula here---That is why I quitted posting here because of those rude, uncaring people who are cowards (hide their real names).
I find it so offensive from them.
Have a good weekend!
I'm still thinking of Vivi.
Hey Sue chin up girl, it was your decision to do what you had to, do not let this moron of a person keep you away from the friends you have made here.
Hey Paula, don;t let them keep you away either. Be strong and stand your ground, hell we haven't left after all the times we got bashed and attacked and accused of having Vivi. It is what it is people will always have something to say no matter what you do or say. Screw them all I say. Life goes on with or without them.
Hey Lois where are you, hiding in the closet again with Jose
Ruby are you also hiding or did you move to a new home beacuse you think someone is coming to visit you also.
Jose only has eyes for you, Deb!!!! He loves the way you fling him around in your trunk!!! Manhandler!!!!
God bless you, Debbie! Yes I know but I have to keep my angers in check! I will/may be posting in the near future but not now.
But thanks for standing up for me.
Are you going out weekend looking for Vivi??
Paula we are out all the time looking and posting, will be out tomorrow again posting and searching, noone has stopped. Someone is always out there.
Talk soon
As for you Lois do not talk you DISGUST me. Remember I said I was mailing packages today, beware you never know when the UPS man will show up ask Ruby. St Paddys day is coming.
KATHLEEN--Sorry for your loss of Booger.
I know that feelings of pains and aches because I was there with all 4 deaths of my own cats in earlier years (when I was younger). My favorite cat named was Angel, her death hits me much harder than ever because I only had her for a year (1 year). Then with a golden named was Taffy who died this June (3 years) she was only 9 1/2 due to the nasty steroid medicines she had taken for years.
Yeah I know the grief, pains and heartaches!
God bless you all!
If the UPS man shows up with any slimy packages, I'll just tell him to RETURN TO SENDER!!!!!! Are you going to take photos of Jose dressed as a leprechaun??
Lois it's a surprise and the return to senders address is yours haha. Now what are you going to do smarty. Love ya Lo
HE'LL JUST FOLLOW THE SLIME TRAIL BACK TO YOUR HOUSE!!! HEE!!!! Love ya back!!!

You girls in Jose's Harlem: I couldn't believe it when I had such a quiet day today, no e-mails... and now I find you here making plans!!!! Made me nervous, very nervous, when it was so quiet on this Western Front!!! Yes, I think he'd love being with Lois!

Disgusted: guess what? You disgust me.
Keeping the Faith, Marnie in CA
Kathleen, I'm so sorry about Booger. I will say a prayer for all of you today at services. I've been there and know how heartbreaking it is.
Good luck to our wonderful foot soldiers today. Thank goodness the rain has stopped and the weather has improved. Please be careful, the ground will be muddy and slippery. Speaking of slippery, may you cross paths with a certain sly whippet and get to meet her.
Kathleen,
I am so sorry for the lose of your beloved Booger. Knowing you, I know he had a wonderful life. He sure is in good company at the Rainbow Bridge. Savannah, Lily and Yoda were there to greet him.
Feeling your pain, Joanne

Just got back from the vet for the puppies first shots. One weights 9.6 lbs and the other 6.6 lbs. They are in good shape. My little 2 lb chihuahua I was told is at least two years older than I was told originally. She has the beginnings of cataracks but her heart murmur is fine for now. He said later she would need medication to help her heart, but OK for now. I'll take it one day at a time and make life easy for her as I can. Love that little dog.

Kathleen I am so sorry to read about Booger.:( HE's in good hands and with ones who have gone before him.
Today I came accross 2 Dalmatians near home when I had Maureen with me from a 5 mile walk. I got the female but the collar was not tight so she slipped out of it and they took off. Came home called the ASPCA and police without results. Grabbed 4 leads. 3 martingale and one loop. Low and behold they trapped themselves in the water treatment place. Actually they could get out they just didn't know it. Tossed them dry chicken and the male came up so I leashed him and guided him thought the gap in the fence. She wanted to come but also didn't want me to loop her as she was caught and got away so so hard. The water person came and said he had to get her out of there so I asked him to try to loop her. He did but then said he had to open the gate and I knew that wouldn't work and sure enough She runs out and 2 other people are trying to help me but they trip over the male and me and he get loose and they both run; him with a 4 foot lead hanging. argggggggggg Well he had mellowed so I followed and went they turned back Icalled him and got down and he came right to me. Whew! They sure are strong and I am not as young as I used to be and it was so hard. So I sat down and this gentleman (never got his name tried to loop her but he wouldn't listen to just sit and he openly tries to noose her and she is too coy for that. Finally we went into the park so she wouldn't be running into the street like she was. We attached his lead to the bench with his collar and took turns trying to noose her but too coy. So I just kepp giving cammands and she finally let me oet het and she got comfortable and I grabbed her nape and held for dear life while the gentleman noosed her. Yeah! I put the two show martingales on her also.
The parks officer drives up to tell us No dogs allowed and I said Your going to tell us they are not allowed but we captured them because they are lost. So he took me and the dogs accross to the Vets I hate and they scan them but won;t take them in. So we took them to the Baum brothers at Crawford animal hospital and they took then right in and said they would call Dalmation Rescue and they would be safe. So glad the parkie came as I would have had them here and ot would have been a disaster even if only a few hours. Powerful and head strong. She's in beginning heat and peeing a lot and he even peed on my shoes plus theyed wreck the joint. So meantime we are looking for the owners so if anyone hears anything let me know.
Thanks
