Inspired by Vivi breeder Bo Bengtson's upsetting experience at an airport while shipping a whippet, search coordinator Bonnie Folz has printed thousands of fliers containing the information below on safe airline handling for dogs. Rules at Madison Square Garden prohibit leafletting, but Bonnie hopes to distribute these at nearby hotels and the pre-Westminster specialty shows this weekend.
If you will be in the city and can transport or distribute fliers, please contact Bonnie at pawsativebf@aol.com.
URGENT MESSAGE
IF YOU ARE FLYING DOGS
PLEASE BE AWARE THAT MULTIPLE LAYERS OF SECURITY CHECKS CAN BE PERFORMED WHILE HANDLING YOUR DOGS DURING AND AFTER CHECK-IN AT YOUR AIRLINES
PLEASE TAKE THE FOLLOWING STEPS WHEN FLYING YOUR DOGS
- Carefully inspect your own crates. Check all locks, screws and connections. Have zip ties readily available. Drill holes at the top and both sides of the crate. This will allow you to add the zip ties AFTER the Transportation Security Administration's inspection of the crate.
- When checking in, have the ticket agent call a TSA agent over or ask where to take the crate to a TSA security station for inspection before handing the dog over to the AIRLINES for shipping. Airline employees may not know to do so. TSA work for the US Government and AIRPORT not the airlines.
- After TSA inspects the crate they will place a Homeland Security tag on the crate and then the zip ties can be applied to further secure the dog.
- Post a sign that says DO NOT OPEN EXCEPT IN EMERGENCY & ONLY IN AN ENCLOSED ROOM on top of the crate, above the door.
- Post your contact information, including CELL PHONE NUMBER boldly on all sides of the crate, with instructions to contact you immediately if needed for the handling of your dog. Keep your cell phone on until the very last minute.
- Let the airline personnel know to immediately notify you in the event any additional security checks are needed.
- Do not hesitate to request your dog NOT be transported on a tug to the aircraft.
- Ask where your dog will be kept until loaded. Go to your gate and watch the crate being loaded. Dogs are last to load and first off, this is an FAA rule.
- Tell the ticket agent at the gate you are waiting for a dog to be loaded before you board the plane. If you MUST board the plane before the dog is loaded, tell the flight attendant to notify the Captain to confirm the dog has been safely loaded (describe the crate) or you will have to get off the plane!
- Upon arrival, make sure your crate was taken off the plane.
- DO NOT BE SHY, ask questions. Make people aware. Be assertive but professional and take whatever steps necessary to insure your dogs are handled correctly.
- Your knowledge and involvement can mean a world of difference in the safe handling of your dog.
STILL MISSING from JFK Airport - Vivi, the whippet - any info please call 877-JFK-VIVI

KUDOS TO BONNIE AND BO!!
GOD BLESS YOU.
KEEP FAITH IN FINDING VIVI AND KEEP THE BELOVED PETS SAFE WHILE ON THE PLANES AND OFF THE PLANES.
GREYT Idea
Excellent advice. People will need to be assertive to make this work. The airports are filled with petty bureaucracy and mini fiefdoms--none of which speak to the others. Now THIS is constructive. Not like the stupid candles.
SURE--GET OFF IT!! YOU'RE SO RUDE AND VERY PITIFUL PERSON. YOU ONLY WANTED THE ATTENTIONS?? GO TO ANOTHER BLOG ,NOT HERE (VIVI BLOG)
I FORGIVE YOU FOR BEING SO RUDE TO US.
Thank you Bonnie and the others involved. This is a great step toward helping insure the safety of these animals.
Please do not just target the shows though. Please initiate this info getting to all airports and other people flying their precious animals.
On the text that says DRILL HOLES:
This should read, Top, bottom and both sides. Bonnie left bottom out.
This is the only way to really secure a door on a Vari Kennel. I have no opinion about other kinds of crates. I only use this brand as it is the strongest, and safest.
YIKES, WE JUST LOST OVER 300 CANDLES! I AM TRYING TO GET IT BACK UP, BUT SURE COULD USE HELP IF ANYONE'S AROUND...
THANKS...
ust read that an afghan was being flown out of a
Midwest Airport and the crate was dropped out of
the conveyor belt, the dog bolted and was hit by
a car and broke its back and had to be PTS
This nonsense has to end, these are people's precious animals, not cargo
SueG - I don't think it was an afghan. I think it was a whippet.
I feel sad that there are no comments under the bulldog lady's story. Is there anything afoot to help this lady?
Good Morning Gang!
I can't get to the candle site during the day, but you can bet I'll be on there tonight to light a bunch of candles! Vivi just has to feel this outpouring of love and warmth!!! Keep the positive energy flowing!!!
Jeanette - There is a link in the story about Laurette, the lady that helped Duke, the bulldog. It is http://www.helplaurette.com. I went there immediately and read her story. There is a link to make donations to help pay for her life-saving surgery. I hope people can help this wonderful woman. Her cancer is treatable with the surgery, but usually fatal without treatment.
MADISON UPDATE:
Gina and Madison really need prayers. Gina is having a very hard time because of these latest reports from the neurologist.
Please pray for both of them. If you have a minute, I know Gina would love to get an e-mail from any of you encouraging her. Just let her know you are from the Vivi blog and we are all praying so hard for Madison, Gina, and the rest of the family.
Sorry, got to go, "sniffy again" as Ruby would say. Pass the tissues someone.

February 6 - MRI Results and pictures
This entry was posted on Wednesday, February 07, 2007 12:59 AM and is filed under uncategorized.
Hi everyone. I've been having a bit of a rough time so I have not updated, but I'm on my way back up to a more positive place. I think I am going to see a psychologist to help me through this. I have to work through some of these feelings and I have to be healthy so I can be there for Madison. Anyway...on to the update.
Madison is doing pretty well. She had been a little sick for a while, but she's doing much better. Progress is painfully slow, but all in all she's doing pretty well. We followed up with her neurologist on Monday and it was a hard visit. Anoxic injuries of course are in the brain so they are all on the inside. Madison does not have bumps and bruises and outward signs of an accident. Sure, she has some scars and you can tell by looking at her she is a special child, but it's easy to forget that she has a major injury going on inside her head sometimes just by looking at her face. The neurologist report was a slap of reality. She has brain damage. I knew it but to hear it again was painful. The doctor talked about the ventricles in her brain swelling. What this means is that as brain cells die, they release a fluid and that fluid causes the ventricles to swell. We are being referred to a neurosurgeon to rule out the need for a shunt to drain the excess fluid. None of this is really unexpected, but I guess I hoped that the report would have a more positive result. The doctor also gave me the results of the SEP test she had done. This is a test that checks the signals to the brain in the limbs. They put sensors on her head like an EEG and then they stimulate the nerve endings in the legs, arms, etc to see if the signal gets carried to the brain. He said there was not much response. I didn't understand because she does move some. He said that the connection is there, but the signal is getting blocked and so it only gets through about 20% and that's why she moves, but not much. I'm hoping this will improve with therapy. The last test the doctor talked about was the EEG. Madison is still showing epileptic spikes in her brain patterns. The doctor says there are a lot of abnormalities in her brain waves (to be expected) and he feels that although we haven't witnessed seizures, that she will have them if we take her off seizure meds. We are adjusting them though so she is not on so much. Hopefully as we wean her off of one, she will not start having seizures.
The visit really was nothing that was totally unexpected, but it still was very hard to hear. I'm viewing this as a baseline test and not something that defines her. She is making improvements. We just all have to be patient to follow this journey through. It will be a long and hard road. But, we aren't giving up. B+ for Madison...yes, sometimes I have to remind myself that.
I uploaded new pictures to Madison's website so check them out when you have a chance. She had a very smiley morning this morning so I got a good shot of those pearly whites. Speaking of which, I have to get her to the dentist for her check up. I'm really worried about how far back her bottom jaw has moved. I don't know if they will refer us to an orthodontist or if it will be a wait and see thing. I'll let you know!
B+ for Madison Never give up

EVERYONE, just walked in and see candle vigil count is down to 8300 and falling.
Going to work on it now and candles seem to be lighting immediately. If anyone is out there who can help, please do.
Thanks muc.

LOOK FOR "GROUPS" AND CLICK ON THAT, VIVI IS FIRST ON THE LIST UNDER GROUPS........ACKKKK PEOPLE!
Here's an upbeat story. I'd like to share what I got to help with this morning. The group I work with specializes in or focuses on moving retired Greyhounds from farms and kennels in Kansas to adoption groups across the country.
There's a guy that converted a Greyhound bus (how appropriate) into a Greyhound dog hauler holding 66 dogs in comfortable individual air-conditioned quarters. My group tries to fill the bus three to four times a year for a haul to the East and at least once a year to the great Northwest. http://www.greyhoundsupport.org/Hauls.htm
This morning's scheduled haul had requests from adoption groups for 93 dogs! Yes ... NINETY-THREE retired Greyhounds leaving for adoption groups from Kansas City to Pennsauken, New Jersey. Ten of them were over seven years old and three were under a year. They had to hire the bus and another trailer and use other transportation.
I was privileged to GUR or transport two 6 1/2 year old white/brindle greyhounds (shades of Vivi) halfway to their new homes. I am happy to be a part of helping these wonderful creatures get to their forever homes.
Ruby is it MILLER time yet? lol
back to the candles!
Chris, That is a great story. I had an adopted Grey for 10yrs, he came from a track in Virginia.
He was a sweetheart!
ROSA,
Its MILLER TIME ANYTIME, but since its only 3:15 here in California, I'll hold off on the SMIRNOFF vodka..
BTW, anytime is chocolate time you know!
Great Greyhound story.
VIVI'S CANDLE SITE IS AT 9,419
Gonna take a sandwich break (now that my dental numbness is wearing off) and will be back to get these candles WAY UP! Two hungry kitties are biting my ankles too!
Rosa, hook up the chocolate fountain...will come back with my slurpy cup stapled to my wrist.
Back in a few....
IRENE,RUBY, Ready when you guy's are! Hooking up all booze and chocolate ASAP!
Hi everyone,
Just spent about an hour lighting candles. Last count when I was there was 9,705. Taking a break and will be back to do some more. Also, I'll be doing my candle vigil at 9:00 p.m. for our little girl. Vivi please feel the love and follow the candle lights to a searcher so you can go home.
Please keep them going for Hopey to. She was seen one street over from where I was today. I'm going to wring her neck....
Gail, I've forgotten which state Hopey is in??? She had 111 candles the last time I lit one..I hope the poor little thing is found soon...she's a tricky one!
RUBY, hOPEY IS IN CT.
We had over 10000 candles a little while ago. Going back for the night buffer. We lost over 1500 last night.

I've lost the candle website. Would someone provide so I can light candles please?
Thanks
Maggie, here's the link to the candle site.
http://www.gratefulness.org/
Susan - thanks.
I'm praying and lighting.....
my 9:00 p.m. candle vigil has started. Said my novena and praying for a miracle real soon.
Great job on the candles. I notice we have 5 countries now- not long ago it was 200 candles from one country. People are noticing. They only last a couple of days so that's 5000 per day. Keeping the faith.
Hi!
My daughter and I helped at a Dog Adoption Day in Montville, CT today and it was so uplifting to see some of these dogs go to loving homes. The Rottie, Bayou who we had helped pay for her exams and was placed back in the shelter was adopted by a single woman not too long ago and it's going good. What Bayou has gone through I hope this will be her true forever home. A couple of the cats and one Rottie there had such abuse stories that I almost started crying right there. Abusers don't deserve any consideration.
Gail, I can only imagine what you thought after finding out how close Hopey was. I hope you guys can lure her in very soon. Where was the sighting?
Susan,
Abusers get away with murder quite often. when they do go to court, they get off with a slap on the wrist.
I'm just hoping that Wayne Dean who was the cause of Otis the Greyhound to be put to sleep, will get years and years, but in Pima Cnty Arizona, not much chance I'm afraid.
They've raised over $17,000 to help with the cost of surgery for the gal who saved Duke, the Bulldog last year. She needs somewhere around $45,000 for the 9 hour operation and chemo...Check the blog, "Bulldogger in need"..
She's helped thousands. Maybe some of you could donate a few dollars for her surgery.

Candles? http://www.gratefulness.org
I just lit some more candles to get back up to over 10,000. West coast, keep the flames glowing.
I lit candles for about an hour. I'm getting sleepy. Back later on today.
Chris in KC - I read that story about the greyhound GUR - how lucky and wonderful that you got to be a part of it - It is so fulfilling to help these sweet souls go to their new forever home.
UPDATE ON BOSTON AND OTIS TRIALS: I emailed Karen in Tucson to ask how the trial went for Boston's abuser - sentencing was on 2/8 - and to also ask about Otis' abuser - wayne dean. She said
No. I didn’t go but apparently nothing happened. For Boston-Racing Home Greyhounds in Phoenix has not supplied any medical bills. I don’t know why they’re stalling. They’re in Maricopa county and we’re Pima county and for someone reason Pima County doesn’t want to subpoena them.
I also heard that now Otis’ case may not go to trial because he may change his plea.
I then asked what he changed his plea to - guilty? She answered:
Yes to guilty. I have a friend who goes every time and keeps me posted. I have to work for a living and she is retired so that is how she gets to go.
Supposedly in jail he has been beaten up and now is separated from the others.
I will keep you posted. Thanks for your diligence.
Whatever happened to Vivi? Have they given up finding her? That is one of the saddest stories around, that and the missing 185 Tucson greyhounds, the 23 dogs to die of a malfunctioning heater…etc.
I wrote her back and told her of the recent sighting and that the Vivi footsoldiers and out of towners are out there every day faxing businesses and posting flyers and that almost every weekend and some weekdays volunteers are out searching for her - that it is a daily vigil to keep the word out there about Vivi. Also let her know what a greyt group we have become in rescuing strays, abandonded animals and writing letters to DA's, judges and politicians.
Well it's barely keeping affloat but doable if we all keep lighting as many as we can steady. Hopefully we won't have to do another marathon. lol Thought my hand would just blow up last night and don't stand fast after a few hundred. lol Wanted to get to the others but these keep me busy enough. My thoughts and prayers are with them here also. I pray for them all as I light Vivi's. Did anyone notice the UK vacination protocall link I put above? Happy Birthday Nancy,:)
Oh; a couple of things I noticed. Most of the candles go out around 36 hours. Some a lot sooner. Also it seems to stem the domino affect of candles going out if you always select the first available candle. Works for me so far anyway.
Well, I have been lighting candles for over 2 hrs. Counts keep going down faster than I can add candles. Come on
every one-- lets keep them lighting for
the searchers and Vivi !!!!
Teri, I am with you on this, perhaps more people will be around today to help keep it up.
It's hard, we need to keep focusing on that prayer for Vivi, like we have and hopefully it will bring us some good news again.
Rosa
Kathy in Colorado: Have you talked to Victoria recently about the Foals? PRAYING our VIVI BLOGGERS will be owning a few FOALS SOON!
These babies deserve a chance, they are so adorable!
Please keep us updated on our progress, These poor babies need help by tomorrow morning. LETS not let them down. Lets try and do all we can for them.
I still feel my going through the link on my site and always clicking the first available candle to light helps. I seem to have little set backs and can go steadier.
http://chilliescorner.com/home.html
You just click Light a Candle for Vivi above her flyer. Worth a try I think. I have to get ready to leave and can not bring them up right now. Hope they are not too far gone by the time you come here. Either way we still had those 10,000 candles so they count. Don't go crazy just a steady normal pace. You will get there. Thanks
good morning everyone and happy Sunday - hope all is going well for the searchers in NYC.
I would like to remind everyone that if you can, please send a check to Victoria at LLC for the nursemare foals - On Friday, she was able to talk the man that has these foals into giving her until tomorrow to raise extra funds to purchase more of the 12 foals that he is taking to slaughter. I know this is a terrible sounding thing but it really does happen. I know over on the Barbaro blog, and also on our blog in the past, we were writing our senators and representative to please support and pass the anti-horse slaughter bill. Well we can help in a big way by sending a few dollars to the Last Chance Corral and give Victoria and her volunteers the chance to purchase these foals and care for them until they can find adoptive home for these precious babies.
Go to the Last Chance Corral site: http://www.lastchancecorral.org/foal_rescue/foal_rescue.php and check out these little faces. These babies are here only because of the selfishness of horse breeders for the almighty dollar. These foals face the same outcome as the premarin foals - only being born so that their mamas can serve a purpose for others. They are born, allowed 24 hours with their mamas and then taken away to fend for themselves. Simply heartbreaking to me. Humans are a cruel breed and we all know what bad the human spirit can do - look at the abusers we have helped put behind bars. BUT - the human breed can be a very good and caring breed also - as we on Team Vivi have demonstrated time and time again.
Please see what you can spare and then send a check to the Last Chance Corral for the foals - DON'T FORGET to mention on your check that this is from Team Vivi - ALSO - please drop Victoria an email or a phone call - she really is a wonderful woman to talk to - and let her know the check is on its way and for what amount. She is able to take that amount and hopefully put that amount towards the purchase of a foal on Monday before the check actually arrives.
she has promised to keep me updated and to let me know how many foals she is able to rescue tomorrow. Hopefully she will be able to get all 12 but unfortunately it doesn't stop there - After these 12 are rescued, there will be other mares delivering that will face the same fate. I intend to keep this organization on my list of charities that I will try to support. Hopefully it is something that my company will also match in its donation matching fund.
Bless this entire Vivi Team and please donate if you can.

NOW - back to the candles :)
Thanks Rosa, your link does seem to be
quicker, darn this dial up connection.
Lighting candles and praying that we get
good news soon !!
KATHY:
I will do all I possibly can from now on to help Victoria and her foals. Oh God, what a horrible thing. I've always known the drug companies were using the urine of pregnant mares to make Premarin...just never looked into what happened to all the foals produced...now it's in my face and makes me want to SCREAM, truly! Never, did I even suspect they were slaughtering newborn foals...
Humans are capable of unspeakable cruelty and also amazing kindness....we need to try and make up for the cruelty and inhumanity that is happening here.
The racing industry also contributes to this problem I am sure.
So wish I had the money to help in a really big way here, but I don't. Will send what I would spend on not really necessary "things" to Victoria. Every
$250 we can get together will save one young life
and we need to find ways to STOP this with legislation in some way.
Thank you for giving us a chance to help in a small way here. Will light candles in my church for Victoria and for Vivi in a few minutes.
C'mon, Team Vivi, every little bit will amount to saving one very young life here...PLEASE!
TERI: I think that was B-J who posted the link for the quicker lighting of the candles.
I have to run an earend and will be back to light for a long stretch this afternoon. WE ROCK!
KATHY In CO: THANKS again for bringing the Foals to our attention, I am dropping my check to Victoria in the Mail today, I feel it can't get there fast enough for these poor babies.
TEAM VIVI WE CAN DO IT!
IRENE: I feel the same. I really need to win the LOTTO, better start playing so I have a chance. THAT would be my dream, to open a large facility on acerage for Animals in need. VIVA LA VIVI!
Does anyone know the cost of purchasing one of these foals?
Rosa - my pleasure - it feels so good to be able to help these little babies - I hate hearing about things like this but it makes your heart feel good if you can help - even if it is a little bit. Like they say - every little bit helps. AND it adds up quick. Don't feel like you may only have $5 or $10 to spare and that isn't anything - it truly is - you take that $5 or 10 and multiply it by a few of us on the blog and before you know it - we have sponsored a foal - a precious little life that would have not had a chance had it not been for YOUR $5 OR $10 donation.
It costs Victoria $250 to rescue the foal - don't know how much she charges for someone to adopt them from her - but give her a call - she is a very nice lady to talk to - you may get her when she is mukking a stall tho -- ha ha ha
My check for $250.00 is in the mail today. One less baby to worry about.
AWESOME Meri-Lou - that's two for sure - on our way to number 3, maybe 4 :):):)
If Wayne Dean gets off with a plea for what he did to Otis the Greyhound, shame, shame on Arizona and Pima County. This man tortured this dog for God knows how long and he could get off easy? I'm sick..If you read the case, which is gross and disgusting, you'll see that this creep ought to be hanged, not given a slap on the wrist.
Those two "boys" who were sentenced to 10 years each for killing a puppy in Atlanta even showed the dead dog to kids and told them if they talked, they'd kill them too...Part of their sentence was for "trashing the community center" at the apartment complex they lived in. To these bums, it was a joke. They lived with their sister, I wonder where their parents were, or did the Molder's come out from under a rock?
I went on a public AOL blog and I can't believe the scum that talks about animal abuse and says its ok.
I urge you all to write to whoever it takes to pay attention to the plight of animals! Dogs, cats, horses..
I believe KathleenSss mentioned one of the young men had raped and tortured a 3 yr. old child. I find nothing on this. If this is true, it should have been brough out in the court.
I'm sickend and disgusted!
No one has to comment on what I just posted. I just had to get it off my chest! /o;
Meri-Lou, you need to email Victoria to let her know you are sending that much. The 12 foals are due to go to slaughter tomorrow. If she knows one more is sponsored she can save one more.
Yes Mari-lou, here is Victoria's e-mail so you don't have to go through the other thread. Please don't forget to let her know you are going to help, a life depends on it.
lccorral@frognet.net.
I have a great feeling about these little foals, again, more lives saved cause of our DEAR little BRAVE WHIPPET VIVI!
Going to lite candles
The candle site puts Vivi candles into the group but leaves it in the entire candle site. I just did a test and it appears again in the candle site and goes to the group.
I have already emailed Victoria to let her know that I put a check in the mail today. I also understand that this makes three that have been saved so far. I have a challenge for this group and believe we can do it as we have in the past. There are nine left and I will continue to send a check for another $250.00 each time this group saves three more. Do I have any takers?
Meri-Lou, I sent a check for $100. This morning. if that helps you figure out how many more will be saved.
Thanks for your generousity. Rosa
RUBY: It wasn't me that mentioned that about the above-mentioned young men I don't think. Wouldn't surprise me though. I have read very little on this case because it sickened me so much. I saw a headline on Fox News and stopped there.
OTIS' SCUM: After talking to the Pima County office once, I felt much better about plea bargains. Yes, he is getting off WAY TO EASY. But if a plea bargain is made they are able to put specific stipulations in it, such as he would not ever be allowed to own another animal, be around other animals, or harm an animal on the street. That would be good in itself.
FOALS: Here is a link I found about Premarin. Maybe it would be a good idea to launch an e-mail campaign to this company who produces this drug to stop this horrible practice of harming these foals. Sometimes going to the top and the money does a lot of good. I'm surprised PETA is not onto this already.

MADISON AND GINA: Please pray for Gina and Madison. I spoke with Gina by phone yesterday, and these latest reports from the doctor are causing her very much heartache and she sounded terrible. She needs our prayers to lift her up very much right now. Thank you.
RUBY: Just remembered what you are probably thinking about.
This was not those two young men, this was a man in Memphis who had been living with the mother of this child for only 2 weeks. He beat this child to death right in front of the mother, and she did nothing to stop him. The child was such a sweet little 3-year-old boy, and when I saw this on the news in Memphis I cried and cried.
I remember mentioning this right around the time we were talking about the horrible things being done by humans to animals, and I was pointing out this occurs with children as well.
So let's not forget to pray for these innocent children along with these innocent animals. I mentioned that song, "Bless the Beast and the Children, for in this world, they have no voice, they have no choice."
has anyone other than myself talked to Victoria at the Last Chance Corral?
Prayers and candles for Madison kathleen - poor Gina - she must be going thru her own hell with her little girl - I am so lucky to have a healthy grandbaby
Meri-Lou I also have a check for $150.00 going to save a foal. I already mailed Victoria to let her know how much I am sending, between Rosa's check and mine we saved another foal.
KathleenSsss, I found the post and it wasn't you who said the thing about the rape of a 3 yr. old. Thanks for answering me.
