The fifth in an occasional series of Vivi volunteers near and far.
Name: Barbara-Jean Landsperg.
Location:Valley Stream, N.Y.
Age: 56.
Occupation: Animal-care specialist specializing in avians, though she’s currently unemployed.
Animal buddies: Chillie, 8-year-old fawn Chihuahua; Maureen, a 10-ish Shiba Inu-Corgi-Chihuahua mix; assorted Congo African greys including Emily and Charlie (14 years old), brothers Thumper and Sammy (13), Chaps (the senior citizen at 30); Amy, a 7-year-old Blue Fronted Amazon; and two Blue Indian Ringneck Parakeets, Sapphire (17) and Indigo (15).
Temporary resident: Duke, a black-lab puppy rescued by Vivi volunteers Rosa and Tina. If you know of a good home for him, holler.
Thing people misunderstand most about parrots: “They think they are like dogs and expect them to be all sweet and cuddly. Or they totally don’t get it and think they are just a bird.”
What she was in a previous life: Dog groomer, for almost 30 years.
Worst breed to groom: Cocker spaniel. “They have heavy coats that if not groomed daily can mat to nightmare proportions. They take forever to dry and most do not enjoy being groomed -- and let you know it.”
Best breed to groom: “The Afghan hounds were extremely patient, and although they would probably rather be elsewhere, they knew they were gorgeous when they were done.”
Favorite meal: Round steak with mashed potatoes with gravy, spinach and a tossed salad.
Guiltiest pleasure: Tapioca.
Celebrity who looks most like her: “I heard Dinah Shore as an 18-year-old. Now ... ?”
What got her involved in the Vivi search: “I thought she wouldn’t survive the cold. Duh!”
What she does for the search: “I put up fliers, hang door hangers, do some feeding stations when needed, hand out cards and try to get the word out to all I meet, especially the people I see walking their dogs. I check out sighting areas, walk the parks and cemeteries in a leisurely manner, and maybe sit a while and eat lunch in hopes of spotting Vivi.” That's all after she has finished her job searches and interviews. “Vivi has actually expanded my job searches to Queens,” she laughs. “I do a lot of cold walk-ins.”
How she gets to Vivi sightings: Mostly buses during the week, riding shotgun with other Vivi searchers on weekend and night searches.
Longest travel time via public transportation: Three hours -- one way.
Best Vivi-search memory: "When [longtime Vivi volunteer and blogger] Nancy came to rescue me on a Sunday after I missed the last bus out."
Worst-Vivi search memory: Walking in the early-morning dark in Flushing and passing a shipment of cedar mulch at Home Depot that sent her into a severe asthma attack. “I took six puffs on my inhaler and stopped two times each block to Main Street, where I finally found some relief and the bus. I had no insurance and was praying to come out of it and not have to go to the nearby hospital. Whew!”
What friends think about her Vivi mania: “All mine are animal lovers, so they are rooting for us. Acquaintances and neighbors ... well, they think she's with someone and not out there at all.”
What she knew about whippets before she started searching for Vivi: “Loved them, and being familiar with sighthounds, I knew Vivi would be difficult. But never did I dream she would go that feral so fast.
What she tells people who ask why Vivi hasn’t been caught: “That she is in survival mode and very wary. If she is spotted even under her own terms, she bolts at the simplest gesture to entice her.”
If Vivi were a parrot, what kind would she be? “A cockatoo. They are more like juvenile delinquents — so smart they get bored. They are super special and want lots of attention, but give them their freedom to do as they please, and you are dust.”

Great picture B-J. I hope a business person with a business connected to animals will see this and hire you. You deserve it.
Long overdue fellow bird lover. Benny chortles hello and congrats. McGee and Minou in purr mode.
Well it is about time that one of my favorite volunteers is on this blog (hee, hee).
Truly B-J, your kindness and wonderful heart have always shined like "pure gold" whenever I talked to you or through e-mails. You are one in a million, and Vivi is so blessed to have you in there with all of these other wonderful volunteers trying to help her each day.
I pray for you every night and am constantly reminding the other foot soldiers to please watch over you out there alone posting and searching so much. And they always let me know they are sure doing that because they love you just as much as Tinkerbell and I do.
Bless you for all you do, and I agree with Karen's comment above. Someone out there, HIRE THIS WOMAN. She is incredible!
Wonderful to meet you, B-J! You have been totally amazing.
B-J, Wonderful writeup for a lovely lady and committed Vivi Volunteer! You are indeed a special woman!
B-J thank you for all you are doing for Vivi :) You are a strong woman and also very determined. Hope everyone is doing well and keeping the faith....
B-J, Thank you for being there for Vivi, and all the other lost animals who are blessed to cross your path! VIVA LA VIVI! Rosa
B J You are such a caring person. Vivi is lucky to have you out there looking for her.
Wonderful to read about you, BJ. Thank you for your dedication and effort to find Miss Vivi. I have great respect for avian specialists having found a wounded cooper hawk on our lawn a few years ago. After watching the rehabilitator handle him and then nursing him back to health so he could be released back in the wild a few months later, it is no easy task. Please be careful out there in your searches and know how much you are appreciated.
Great to finally meet you BJ, you are a very
sweet person, and I have enjoyed blogging with
you for t hese last long 7 months.
Keep the faith girls

B.J.
Did you find your praying mantis? I saw the LOST poster for her..lol
I only have 1 hanging around my house now. I think its getting to cold for them!
Also::did I mention that I had a Yellow Nape who was known to be 55 when he died? He belonged to my kids principal's wife. when she died, he was given to me. I had him 11 years.
Wow; thank you Denise. And thank you all for your kind words. "blushing"
Yes; Ruby I found her in the soil of the plant she was hanging out in. She had passed away. Got her to late to reverse the dying process. 55 was a good old age for your yellow nape Ruby.
We took Duke the LAb puppy to Bonnies training classes tonight to show him to someone. He ate his dinner; went into the cage and promptly passed out fast asleep. He was exhausted. I applied to the New BJs opening near me today and thought if they hired me I would be B-J working at BJs. lol I myself am exhausted and probably pass out myself in a few but glad I checked the blog for Sharon's prayer. Was a nice surprize.

Joshua 1:9
Be not afraid, neither be dismayed; for the Lord thy God is with you wherever you go.
Daddy God, we bring Otis to you. Please bring justice for him. We know that Otis is by your side, discovering what true love is for the first time in his life. Thank you for the loving, forever home you have given him as he snuggles up next to your feet and kisses your loving hand. We ask you Daddy to look into his beautiful eyes and bring him justice for the horror that he and his companions endured. Please cause this man to suffer the consequences of his actions. We know that vengence for Otis will come to pass even if it doesn't happen today. But we plead for Otis that justice be done on this day. We never met Otis, yet we love him because he is your creation. You lovingly brought him forth into this earth to recieve love and care, yet he recieved nothing but brutality and evil at this man's hand. Don't allow this wickedness to continue any longer. We stand in Otis's behalf, we are his voice in this earth and we cry out for justice in Jesus's Name. Don't allow this man to hurt anymore of your creation. And while he is in prison, do not allow him to have any contact with animals as some prisons do. We do not have hateful hearts Daddy God, we just want justice and honor for Otis. We want the world to see that you cannot treat your creation this way and get away with it. Holy Daddy, Papa, we thank you for granting our request. We thank you for continuing to lead and speak to little Vivi. We ask your blessings over her food and water. We thank you for leading her to the rescuer you have chosen today in advance for we have faith in your guiding light. Protect her from all evil and harm. Lift her up in your grace and bring her home today to her family. You are our great and shining light in this world of darkness. Help us to see more of you and to feel your presence for we need your strength and refreshing joy. Lead us into total victory as you are our Captain. Let the banners of victory fly high and strong in our lives as we glorify you and your Holy Son Jesus. Daddy God, continue to speak to and lead all we have brought to your throne to the safety and love of home with their families, Vivi, Biggie, Sniffles, Rags, Faithful, Little Aussie, Mommy, Daddy and Baby Girl pup, Apple Riley, Holly, (bring her out of the desert to safety) , Precious Hosanna, Buddy, Annie, African Grey, Patterson, pointer, Jack Russel, Grey Tabby, Bowdee, Yorkie, Shimi, the cemetary strays Buttons, Wanda and Ticket. Holy Jesus, continue to touch our little ones with your precious healing power, CJ, Dante, Felice, Max, Little McGee, Murphy, Mylie, Barbaro, Gunner, Linus, Kiva, Ellie,(restore all that had to be taken), Morgan, Little Andi, Nicki, Dude, Brandy, Tucker, Lexie, Isabella,Twin Kittens, Bowen, Pie Bird, Heather, Doogie, Clarus, Prince, Star, Skeeter and Scout. Button's owner, and Susan. Continue to protect beloved Israel and America as they battle terrorism to keep us free. Shelter them and give them victory. Protect the innocent and lead them to safety and provision. Bring justice for Otis and Freedom for Duke. Bring your sweet deliverance to Tammy and Doogie. Give them righteous Judges who will honor your creatures Daddy God and bring Duke home to his mommy where he is meant to be. Help us to raise all the funds that are needed, for you are our provider. Help those who are looking for employment to find the place you want their light to shine. Increase and bless them Daddy. Re: Millions of animals to die in new tests.
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Animal testing is still existing today.
Millions of animals to die in new EU chemical tests
TENS of millions of rabbits, mice and guinea pigs are facing a painful
death in laboratory experiments to be imposed next April because of new
European Union rules on chemical testing. The new laws will set compulsory
tests for about 30,000 chemicals that have been on the market since before
1981, when there were no stringent health and safety requirements.
Many of the chemicals are used in household items, from shampoo to
children's toys, and EU policymakers have pushed for the new standards,
arguing that too little is known about the dangers for human health and the
environment. Products will have to stop using unsafe chemicals or be
banned, but the tests cannot be carried out without the "collateral damage"
to millions of animals. Campaigners protest that the tests are too
indiscriminate and that not enough has been done to find humane
alternatives.
Current estimates of the number of animals to be affected range from the
16m predicted by the chemicals industry to 45m over 15 years calculated by
Germany's Federal Institute for Risk Assessment. The toxicological
experiments will include chemicals dropped into rabbits' eyes, irritants
tested on guinea pigs' skin and cancerous tumours grown on mice. The health
risks of chemical exposure during pregnancy will also be assessed on
rabbits, causing their babies to be stillborn.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said it was
"horrified" at the prospect of so many animal experiments. A spokesman said
that despite some positive changes to the draft law, too many animal tests
would still be carried out unnecessarily.
Alistair Currie, campaigns director of the British Union for the Abolition
of Vivisection, said: "It is an animal welfare crisis. All of these tests
could be replaced with non-animal tests."
The new law, known as Reach (the Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation
of Chemicals), is the largest piece of legislation ever adopted by the EU
and one of its most contentious. It has pitted the chemicals industry
against the environmental lobby, the EU against America and, unusually,
animal rights lobbyists against conservationists. In a U-turn last week
David Cameron, the Conservative leader, pledged that his 26 MEPs would back
the legislation, boosting hopes that it will be finalised by the end of the
year.
The European parliament's environment committee faces a crucial vote on the
law in Brussels on Tuesday. Chris Davies, a Liberal Democrat MEP, said he
would table a series of amendments to improve its animal welfare provisions
but conceded that millions of creatures would still be sacrificed.
"We can do a lot more to reduce the need for tests and to speed up the
introduction of alternative testing methods," he said. "But let's not
pretend there will be no animal testing."
The European commission said it could reduce the number of animal tests by
50% if approval is given to alternatives such as computer modelling.
> ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Hard to believe?
Do we really need those 30,000 chemicals on the market?
And if they have been on the market since 1981- who cares if they are
tested?
I suspect that most of the animal tests are also unecessary.

At least let them know you support the fight to ban this legisaltion.
B-J, I sure hope they hire you! Keeping you in my prayers.
very nice bio on you BJ - and what wonderful sounding birds you have. They are such a commitment and how wonderful of you to have them.
Does it get noisy at your house. I only have two birds and when they both get to going, it gets really noisy
Thank you Elizabeth and Kathy.:) Pam what kind of amazons do you have?
Ruby it's really not noisy. The greys are quiet and even use low voices in the early morning. Of course the Amazon can do a little yelling when she wants me. And the Ringnecks are loud only when we have visitors. Indigo who is in the photo does some nightly scolding to Saphire but basically it's quite. Sometimes the loudest one is Star the canary. lol
MADISON UPDATE: I want to thank all of you again for the prayers, thoughts and candles. This is such a good update on Madison. Our prayers are being answered day by day!
-------------------------------
October 9
I'm having a very good day today. I was telling the nurse today that Madison seems a little more aware the past few days. She noticed it too and so did the therapists. If the boys would run by her, she'd turn her head that direction as if she's trying to see who is making all the noise. Today, if I was talking to her, she would look my direction and smile. I felt she made eye contact a few times even. It makes me happy. I then realized that just under a week ago I started giving her glyconutrients twice a day. Glyconutrients work at the cellular level to help the cells communicate better. I know several other anoxic injury patients who use them and have seen good results. I had forgotten that I started giving them and then it hit me that wow she has had an improvement since starting them. I don't think it's a coincidence. We'll continue to give these to her.
No other real updates at this time. Madison was keeping her O2 up last night at 99 and 100! Can't get any better than that! I can't wait to get in there a week from today and get that trach out. She's ready.
B-J: I agree that sometimes the loudest one is the canary. I'm birdsitting my mom's canary right now and that thing can really get going. I have a blu-front amazon and a double-yellow. The blue-front I named George from the movie "George of the Jungle." He knows that song and even does the Tarzan yell!! His mother was named Jezebel. She was pure evil!!
After a trip to take care of my own allergies, I took McGee back to the vet for a quick nail trim, and check up. He is healing quite well, while he is still on more pred than we'd like, it is working for him. The addition of pancrenzymes has almost been miraculous-- he now weighs 7.28 lbs!!! (If you remember he had dropped to 4.9.) Again, everyone's prayers have meant so much. Kathleen now (when I get those pictures developed) you will see before and after pictures.
My Benny is a whitefaced pied violet lovebird--which means he is a gorgeous lemon yellow over a lot of his body. He mostly has a pleasant chirp (we call him the chirpolator), but when he wants to protest--watch out! Fortunately, this is rare, and he is really quite the cuddler, very fond of people.
BJ - that puppy is just precious - what a special person you are to be taking care of him until he finds a new home and
Gail - that little chihuahua is adorable
I hope SO much that those two puppies find new forever homes.
Kathleen, thank you so much for the wonderful update on Madison. Her recovery seems to be moving at a faster pace now. Lets all light some candles for this Princess-her group is B+ !!!
Wow! All these rescues by our foot soldiers-ladies, you do Vivi and NYC and all of us proud and honored to call you friends. By the time it is all said and done bet you each of you have a least 3-4 new fur family members!
So happy that the search for Vivi has lead to this... Thank you for EVERYTHING you do foot soilders :) They are beautiful dogs and I hope that they find a forever home soon. Keeping the faith...
Something must be wrong with my computer, I just was able to see the pictures now. Those dogs look so sweet. Thank you foot soldier for rescuing two more lost little souls.
There's a new post with pictures of Duke the lab, and the adorable chihuaha. Everybody should be able to see these babies.
B-J great to see you and hear all about your furry and feathered babies. You are great.
Keeping the faith for VIVI in TX
I thought everyone would enjoy this story with a happy ending. Barbara P's friend Ann lost her beloved elderly lab a while back, and as we have all experienced, was devestated with the death. We had hoped to hook her up with Kristy, but Kristy was adopted just as Ann found out about her. We've been looking for another needy lab, and found one. The lucky boy was picked up as a stray in Port Huron, and sent to Animal Control. I found out about him through petfinder.com connections. Long story short Ann and Bobbie the lab are a twosome!!!
Here's Barbara P's version-
Hooray! Just returned home after leaving Ann and her new lab, Bobbie, at
her house in West Bloomfield. When we arrived at the shelter this morning
the 1 year old chocolate lab, was no where to be seen. After checking they
found that the vet put him in pre-adoption, whatever that meant. Well they
couldn't reach the vet who was teaching at Baker College so we didn't know
why Bobbie wasn't in the regular adoption area. Finally they decided that
Ann could take Bobbie and she'd find out later why the vet moved him out of
the regular area. It seemed to Ann that he didn't seem ill - no kennel
cough, etc..
As soon as Ann's eyes met Bobbie's it was love at first sight. His tail
never stopped wagging and he was all over her with rubs and slobbery kisses.
There was no question this guy was heading to his new home with Ann.
We walked him around the area outside for a long while and he must have peed
twenty times and major pooped three times. He was in seventh heaven hopping
all over the grass with Ann. We finally approached the car...Ann opened the
back door and he happily jumped in and sat down. Whew...he must have riden
in cars before. Throughout the hour and a half ride to Ann's house he
peacefully looked out the windows and propped his throat on my outstretched
arm - between the two of us in the front seat. From time to time he nuzzled
Ann or me and then went back to leaning on my arm and staring out the front
window. He never barked or whined...a perfect little gentlemen. When we
arrived at Ann's home she led him to her backyard where he just ran and ran,
jumping and just generally frolicking all over the place. We threw him a
tennis ball and after chasing it all over the place he brought it back to
our feet over and over again. Ann put out Purina and a big tub of water for
him. So between drinking, munching and playing with the ball he was in
seventh heaven. What a fantastic sight to see him so happy to be so free.
While we were at the shelter we spoke with Pam and I told her the story of
why we happened to be in Port Huron for this dog....I told her (of course at
length) about Vivi and our blog, and I mentioned
We found that Bobbie had been at the shelter for two months and was found as a stray.
It was so hard for me to see all those hopeful beautiful faces in all those
cages. I just couldn't stay back there as long as Ann did.
Well, sorry I rambled. I'm just so excited that this story has a wonderful
ending/beginning. Bobbie has a new forever home and Ann is so happy to have
her new best friend.
Thank you for all the help you gave to make this a good event. I really do
appreciate that you cared so much to help Ann.
Now we need that little wisp of a dog in NY to get found and returned to her
home in CA. It'll happen....we're all praying so hard for her.
Thank you.
Barbara
Sharon, this story sounds like a real life fairy tale with a so very happy ending! Ann and Bobbie are made for each other and will have years of companionship and love-how could they not! Bobbie is indeed a very lucky boy and Ann is as lucky also. We wish them well!
Oh my goodness Sharon, thanks for posting this from Barbara. What an incredibly happy ending. Chocolate labs are so beautiful too. I can imagine how pretty (or handsome) he was.
Sharon, I am looking forward to seeing those McGee before and after pictures too. Still want to do that special picture for you, so be sure and send me some images (they need to be high resolution though to be successful). You go McGee!
Oh my, I fell in love with that Chihuahua above. Someone tell me I do not need another dog - my head says no, but my heart says YES!
Go for it Kathleen - Tinkerbell would love a little playmate and this sweet chi would love you both!
Yeah. Go for it Kathleen. Tink needs a friend to play with when your not home. I have four in the house and bed. Always room for one more. I also have a chocolate lab and a black lab outside. They are best buddies. Love them all.
Oh Mila, I think I hear destiny calling on this one for sure.
I had a Chihuahua lined up twice and they fell through. One guy decided not to give his dog away after all. He was going to college, and his mother wanted to keep that one. I was heartbroken.
Then the other one was adopted before I got him as well. I have been watching the Chi Rescue for quite a while, and kept holding back.
Now if looks like our foot soldiers in New York may have found me the perfect little Chi to keep my Tinkerbell company in the day while Mommy is at work, and share our love forever. I can hardly wait to hear back from Bonnie about him.
They are going to try and locate the owners first though - right? Someone may be heartbroken over this missing little fella. This would be only right. He looks good in the picture like he is not a "long-time" stray.
Sweet story Sharon! Thanks for sharing it.
Nothing on Otis so far..Today was the day the creep was in court. I hope they decided to chop off his head! There were well over 3,000 signatures on the petition site..Thanks everyone, you all did a great job for Otis.
DeniseM is working so I don't hear from her too often. Her job is fine, but she misses seeing Duke often. Now she can only go one day a week to see her little boy at the shelter/pound..Keep signing the petition and writing letters.
www.SaveDuke.homestead.com/
Ruby, I too hope this evil man who caused so much pain to Otis serves long and hard and shares a small cell with Bubba. Now we all know that Bubba hates child and animal abusers, so the creep would learn the meaning of the phrase "What goes around comes around". Keep us posted if you hear of his sentence.
Do you know how close Denise is to raising the funds to spring Duke?
D
Mila,
I've been trying to find info on the Otis case, but I guess it's too early. I wrote to the gal at the Arizona Humane Society and she didn't answer me. I'm hoping to hear something. I also went online and looked at news-papers and found nothing. Maybe tomorrow.
I haven't talke to Denise lately. I doubt that she's very close to raising the money for Duke. She's working now to help pay his expenses. I hope people come through and help her. She was talking about a ralley of some sort on L.I. New York.
All praise to Thee, my God, this night
For all the blessings of the light:
Keep me, O keep me, King of kings,
Beneath Thine own almighty wings.
Amen.
Creator God, Keep one wonderful whippet in the safety of your wings tonight, and send her home to her mama Jil, tomorrow! Bless all those lost and homeless, and give them (back) to their forever homes. Bless Anne and Bobbie the lab as they begin
their companion relationship! Bless BJ and give Your servant the job she deserves, and You want her to have! Thank you for the many happy endings You have given us, and hear us as we ask for a few more!
We pray this night,Father, that You continue Your watch over Vivi,Bowdee,Ticket,Buttons,Biggie,Sniffles,Holly, African Grey, Faithful (the little girl's seizure dog), Buddy, Rags, Precious, Whippet Annie Little Aussie, Apple Riley, and Montefiore Mama, Daddy, and girl (the “tree puppies’” family)so that not even “one paw slips”and now the new cemetary strays. NEWS FLASH REGARDING OTIS!
THIS IS WHAT I GOT IN AN EMAIL FROM A GAL WHO WASA AT THE COURTHOUSE TODAY IN ARIZONA:"Wayne Dean, abuser of Otis, was found competent enough to stand trial. On November 14, he has a pre-trial hearing which will set the trial date.
The prosecutor said she was amazed at the number of petitions and letters and to keep them coming. She is also hoping that rescue groups and animal lovers will come to the trial and wear their respective t-shirts."
She also mentioned that fellow prisoners roughed up the guy pretty good while he was in jail, broken his jaw and his ribs...
Psalm 9:9
The Lord also will be a refuge for tbringing for Otis and his companions. How grateful we are that you are making Wayne Dean stand trial for the horrid actions he has done. My computer and Aol have been messing up all morning. The scripture at the beginning of the prayer is supposed to be Psalm 9:9
The Lord will also be a refuge for the oppressed. A refuge in times of trouble.
But perhaps our Heavenly Daddy wanted it to read the way it did. He is a refuge for Otis and his companions. Thank you Daddy for being a refuge for all of us and your creatures!!! We praise you!!!

Another baby in need in the hospital: OSCAR is a 9 week old mini dachsie ,mostly black with brown, grey and white markings about his head, about THREE POUNDS, tentative diagnosis of bronchopneumonia with labored breathing and a sad little face because he doesn't know what's going. He is expected to be hospitalised about 3 days at least , let's get him home faster ! I don't have to tell you what his family is going through...I stayed later with him but had to leave at 7:30 because Tigger and Wanda are still on antibiotics home here (but both doing fine).
Psalm 27:14
Wait on the Lord, be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart.
Beloved Daddy, we wait upon you. You who created all things, you who have given us our life, you who have provided our needs and strengthened our hearts in times of struggle. Such a lovely Daddy you are. We know you are bringing justice for Otis and his companions and we know you are bringing little Vivi home. Bring Vivi into the arms of the rescuer you have chosen today. Thank you for your continuous care over Vivi as we bless the food and water that you provide for her. We bless the warm shelter you have led her to . Keep her warm and safe from all harm and evil. Cover her under your wings Daddy and continue to speak into her heart as you lead her home to the rescuer you have chosen. Thank you for showing your army the way to go and the paths to follow.
