Unduly Harried

Search-and-rescue dog handler Harry Oakes  left New York this afternoon to return home to Washington State.

Oakes did not find any fresh scent from the whippet during his searches. Likewise, he says, his search dog Valorie did not alert on any "death scent" on Vivi.

In a report prepared for Terri Corrigan of Arizona, who hired him, as well as Vivi's owners Jil Walton and Rick Patterson, he concluded:

"There is a 95% probability that Vivi has been stolen (persons picked her up, kept her without reporting finding her to the authorities).

"There's a 4% probability that Vivi is deceased and we haven't located the area where she's died at. [sic]

"There's less than a 1% chance of probability that we're wrong."

The report did not contain an explanation of how Oakes arrived at these probability percentages.

Some longtime Vivi searches have expressed dismay that only a small group of individuals were involved in Oakes' search, which was funded by private donations and orchestrated by out-of-stater Terri Corrigan. This is not the first time that a pet detective has requested that only a handful of individuals be informed and on-site when active searching was underway.

Pet-related search and rescue is still an ill-defined area with no clear standards of practice. Indeed, pet detectives differ widely among themselves over methodologies, and even the suitability of certain scent dogs. Oakes, for example, believes that dogs trained for human search and rescue can be used for missing animals as well; Karin Goin of Oklahoma, who came to New York to search for Vivi when she was first lost, disagrees, saying search-and-rescue dogs cannot be used because their training discourages "crittering," or following animal scents.

What all pet detectives seem to share is an unshakeable conviction in the superiority of their particular dogs and search methods.

Rick Patterson says that though Vivi searchers near and far have often squabbled over the best way to search for the missing whippet, there is at the heart of the matter some very common ground.

"One thing we've said from the start is that everybody's heart is in the right place -- everyone wants Vivi to be found and returned to us,"  says Rick, who is also busy readying for his November nuptials to Jil. "We keep trying to come up with different things, and we will continue to try to find her."

"There is a 95% probability that Vivi has been stolen (persons picked her up, kept her without reporting finding her to the authorities)".....if this is deed the strongest possibility at this time, then perhaps the reward needs to be offered via media blitz...no questions asked- just return the dog-

I'd like to know the basis of such a conclusion.

I refuse to believe this. How can he come to this conclusion from just a small area that he searched. We are not giving up bloggers. She is still out there.

What makes him suspect that Vivi was picked up?

This makes me sick. Let's prove him wrong.

A 1% chance is a very statistically small chance based on a such small sample. Most studies have a computer model that ends up with a much wider margin of error except in the case of controlled scientific studies. This seems like a large overstatement and may have been written as such so that he can somehow report this in his own statictics as successful for the next clients. This makes me trust Harry less. I did have doubts based on his apparent cockiness and definitiveness- there are somethings you simply cannot guarantee and it seems like a classic red flag whenever someone selling something does over promise. I do hope his reputation will not be buttressed by this.

We need to keep posting until we get a sighting and then we need Sam and Laura to stay as long as necessary. They have been great and have not tried to be heroes.

Now off to agility class. Can barely wait to see what is here when I get back...

Has Rosa commented on what she thought of the search effort?

I think advertising the reward is the best thing to do given the report.

"There's less than a 1% chance of probability that we're wrong."
I'm not sure how he can come up with these actual percentages. How can he or anyone rule out the possibility she's in another area all together since he only searched a very limited one? She's been traveling over many miles and many parts of queens for months now.

You took the words right out of my keyboard, Susan!! LOL I was thinking the same thing.

How the hell can he say with 95% certainty that she was stolen? It doesn't make sense!! In fact it sounds like something that should be on "Shame on You"!!

I don't know about you, but I'm going to start training my dog tonight!!! $5000 to come up with this crap? First class ticket, all expenses paid? Man, I'm in the wrong business!!!!!

C'mon Cookie, let's go. SIT!! Good Girl!!! Give me your paw.. Good Girl!!! OK, we're ready!!! Let's start searching. Please make all checks payable to me. We've got some dogs to report as stolen. This is insane!!!

I guess it's impossible to think that Valorie just didn't get a scent. Man, what a racket!!!!

Lisa E.

I wonder what experience he has with site hounds and how much he knows about this particular dog and the search the last 7 months. Was he aware of her history and all the vast areas and miles of queens she's traveled through? Even though it is always a possibility, she isn't a dog someone is likely going to be able to just "pick up". To me it's more likely she just isn't in the area he was searching in.

And, nothing for nothing, why would he use the word "stolen" if someone happened to pick her up. If that were the case, maybe it was some good samaritan who doesn't watch the news. Maybe it was someone driving down the Belt Parkway and stopped to rescue her and take her home to their house in Massapequa or some other area that hasn't been posted. If someone did rescue her, I don't think it's right to automatically accuse that person of "stealing" a dog that they may think is a poor stray in need of help.

Lisa E.

Whatever... She has not been picked up by anyone ! I think most will agree with me. These #'s mean nothing to me, Vivi is still out there, and this is total crap. I also seen his letter to one of my blogger friends and he was saying this before he even came , so who knows? Laura and Sam sound great to me Karen... To the foot soliders, you guys are so awesome all of you... forget Harry and whatever needs to be done in the future , we know who NOT to contact!!! Team Vivi should stick together, all of us! I know it's hard to do sometimes but keep the faith... god doesn't give you more than you can't handle :)

That's the problem, Susan. No one knows what information was given to Harry because everything went on behind the scenes. No one even knew he was in town until Denise posted it on the blog. There was never a detailed plan laid out. As far as everyone knew, donations were still being accepted to get him here. No one knows where he searched, how he searched or what he would have done if he found her. These were all questions that were asked but never answered.

This whole thing really is shameful. There was so much information out there that was available to him and for one reason or another he didn't contact the key people who have been involved since day 1. Every single person would have cooperated with him 100%. Stevie Wonder could have carried out a better search WITHOUT a search dog than this guy! JMHO

Lisa E.

Well, it's easy to throw out statistics like that when no one can prove you wrong. I agree that the statistics seem highly improbable, based on the length and area of the search. And I also agree that, if she is off the streets, it's just as likely that she was found by someone who doesn't know that she is missing -- rather than someone who "stole" her, which suggests that the person knows she is wanted. Having said that, you'd have to be pretty out of the loop I would guess to not know that a whippet is missing in NYC. But someone might not know who she is. Frankly, I'd just like to know that she is being cared for by someone, even if they don't return her. I'm sure Jil and Rick would rather have the knowledge that she is safe and secure, even if they couldn't get her back. Personally, I have serious doubts about these conclusions. So far, no basis for the conclusions or the statistics have been forthcoming.

put a stop payment on his check. he could have fromed those conclusions without even coming to NYC

If his theory is she was found by someone near Forest Park because that was were the last sightings where... it would be hard to believe that the person doesn't know who Vivi is because of all the flyers posted in the area.

Ok now it is time to get the media to talk about her on the channel 2,4,5, and 7. Who do we know to get this ball rolling. The story needs to be put on the news about how Vivi is still out there and if you don't know who she is and you have found a Whippet call and give the number over the news. THIS IS WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE AGAIN. I cannot believe this crap went on without anyone knowing. I don't care about my donation, not that I have money to throw away, but come on what kind of nonsense was going on with his search, its a lot of BULL!!!!! She is out there and we need to find her one way or another.

Anyone notice theres a new post?

Sheesh, I'm in the wrong area to be saying theres a new post...sorry...This IS the new post..

Ruby

You are too funny

Marty, my confusion is funny? haaaaaaaaaaa...I have no idea how I got in here, but hi hi hi Marty! HOws the weather in "B" town?

I second that, Marty

Ruby, The weather is much better here in good old Bakersfield. My PGE bill went from 800.00 down to 400.00 dollars.Yikes.What a hot summer. You know the electric bill was killing everyone out here in California. Actually the weather is so nice I have been planting my winter flowers.

Lordy Marty, $800 enough to make me move. My kids had a $900 Winter electric heating bill...Good old PG&E..
I have a large house, but my bill is around $180 which I hate..
The deer ate my winter flowers already so I'm having deer for dinner, all winter long.....haaaaaaaaaaa..love those deer

Hey Lisa, we do know where he searched we found out already and what a dissapointment, not any of the places where there were prior sightings. How many times can you search the same area, I thought a tracker works the furthest point out and then in to see which way she went. Why wasn't St Johns cemetery covered since she was on the corner and prints were found by the entrance, but then again noone asked us for places to go. Oh well back to square one, so who comes in next to clean up this mess and track or is this it.

I have read this blog since day one, but never posted.

How can one person determine that Vivi has been stolen. It is truly a shame that $5000.00 was paid to a person who was flown across the country to give that kind of an answer. ANYONE can say they are a Petfinder, Pet Detective, etc. All it takes is a little luck and determination to find a pet. Do some research, dogs who do scent detection give false positives all the time.

Where is Vivi, who knows??? Was she stolen from her crate at JFK? Is she still at JFK? How did she get from JFK to Flushing? How has she survived in a heavily populated area for 7 months without being hit by a car? Yes, she could still be out there, but where?

As I hate to be a doomsayer, as there has been so many of you who have spent countless hours searching, posting, in all kinds of weather. You are all truly great people with huge hearts. But has anyone really seen Vivi since Jil put her in her crate at JFK? I lost a whippet and found him a few days later. There was a huge flyer and ad blitz. I am still getting people calling saying they have seen him over a year later.

Peace and good luck to you all.

Two appropriate verses Psalm 46 (NIV)
THINK VIVI-
5 God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.
THINK US-
10 "Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations.

Creator God, Father of all that has life, we are afraid for Vivi who is lost and homeless. We are discouraged, but will not give up hope. Please, take Vivi in Your care and put Your angels and Saints in charge of her protection and homecoming to Jil. Find her a dry warm, safe place to sleep, and good food and drink to sustain her. Let her know thatwe are not giving up. We who love our animals, have followed this little one’s story since February, confidently ask You to bring her long ordeal to a happy ending. We know we can’t love her any more than You do, so we thank You in advance for hearing us.( Amen.)

During this ordeal Father we have also come across many animals and people who are in great need of Your loving care. We lift up these animals who are lost and homeless and need the same care You have shown Vivi:Bowdee, Biggie, Sniffles, Holly, African Grey, Faithful (the little girl's seizure dog), Buddy, Rags, Precious, Whippet Annie Little Aussie, Apple Riley, and Montefiore Mama, Daddy, and girl (the “tree puppies’” family). We are frail Father and many of us need You healing so that we can serve the purpose for which You have created us.
We lift up the following people in need of Your healing: Millicent,Jacque, JL, Lance, Madison, Kathleen's Mom Mary, Pam, Chris, Abby and Kathleen. Many of us also have animals which need Your healing touch, Great Physician:Doogie, CJ, Dante, Zipper, Felice, Max, Little McGee, Murphy, Mylie, Barbaro, Gunner, Linus, Kiva, Ellie,(restore all that had to be taken), Morgan, Little Andi, Nicki, Dude, Tucker, Brandy, Tinkerbell, Lexie, Isabella, Twin Kittens, Bowen, Pie Bird, Heather, and Lady.

God of Power, stand behind Tammie and Doogie, Duke and Denise, and Otis' followers, as they have stood behind these animals, until justice is done.Thank you so much for helping us find a good home for Kristy!!!

Comfort all who mourn Father God. Greet all who make the pilgrimage to heaven tonight. Be with the families who are mourning them.Especially Father be with Bev, Foggy's friends and caretakers, and Miki (Mystic's mom.) Give all of us the sure knowledge, Father, that we will see our loved ones, human and animal who have gone before. Let them know how much we love them and how hard we are trying to join them in Your time for us. Do not lose us Father God, keep us in Your care so that we may one day be among the flock that You call Your beloved.

Protect Vivi’s Angels; those people who labored long and hard to bring this beautiful whippet home to her family.Don't let them become discouraged. Let them know that our prayers and love support them. Send St. Francis, St. Anthony, and Your host of angels to help them accomplish Your will on Earth.

Let all of us sleep in confidence and peace, knowing YOU ARE IN CHARGE! AMEN!

'Night everyone! Light your candles!

(I agree with much of the "racket", talk going on here. I donated money, too. But let's cut our losses and move on. It's the only way to stay positive.)

Gloria,

Gail T and her mother and also BJ has seen ViVi.

Marty

How did they know it was actually Vivi? Have they ever seen Vivi before she was lost?

You also have to consider that people say things just for the attention. As I said before, maybe things have to be looked at in a different perspective as I don't like to see so many people working so hard for something that possibly is not going to happen.

We all want to find Vivi, but after 7 months of hard work, she has not been found. I am not saying to give up, but simply to not pay these self-proclaimed "Pet Detectives", Thousand of dollars for nothing. If Vivi is going to be found, as Bo said many months ago it will pretty much be someone capturing her in a yard. She has not walked up to anyone in the last 7 months and if she is still out there, she is probably not going to.

Gloria: Many of the sightings were confirmed by search dogs. Barbara-Jean , Gail and her mother all saw Vivi.
I'm curious about the statment by Terri that lots of "Vivi Poop" and "human poop" were found together. IF this is true, would that suggest that she was befriended by some homeless person? I was told that homeless people have set up places in Forest Park. But I can't understand why Harry would say Vivi was "stolen" versus "picked up" (which I don't find likely) . If someone has taken her in for good reasons, or if someone has indeed stolen her, I think the reward would help get her back..She would have to be taken out of the house, someone who saw a flier would see her eventually...and remember that newspaper story about how harry got into trouble with some organization for a variety of reasons that now don't seem so far-fetched .. .just my thoughts.

The people that saw ViVi are both foot soldiers.

Gloria:B.J. also saw Vivi and there have been many "unconfirmed", but possible sightings..
Vivi has markings that no dog I have ever seen, has, so she would be easy to tell if that side was seen and some people said they saw those markings.
We are keeping the faith and something will happen and she will be caught. I believe this and so do many of us! We need more positive thoughts, I hate to say it, but no DOOM AND GLOOM. Thanks for your thoughts tho.

Honest to God people...this has gotten way out of hand. It is disturbing to see that we've once again come full circle.

I keep thinking of the poem by William Butler Yeats..."Turning and turning in the widening gyre, the falcon cannot hear the falconer; things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, the blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere the ceremony of innocence is drowned; the best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intesity..." And he was talking about The Second Coming!

Some days I wonder if he wasn't refering to this blog! It really does get scary sometimes!

So let's stop this "stuff" now before the end of his poem has an opportunity to manifest itself on the blog!

A pretty dorky thing for me to put on the blog but the crazy talk must stop. Please or I'll be dropping my computer into the nearest lake (we have over 10,000 of them in MN you know...)

I know all of you involved with the search for Vivi are upset about the Harry Oakes incident this weekend and him saying he believes she has been stolen, but I think that the better term should have been "rescued or invited in out of the cold". I doubt she has been "stolen" from off the streets. If he had said from the Airport terminal, then maybe I would have believed him. More than likely, Vivi is hiding out deep in the woods of the park system where she has been roaming all these months. If she was indeed pregnant, she would seek out a den area away from everyone and every thing that would be a threat to her and her puppies to be. Posting flyers completely around Forest Park and any parks that connect close to Forest Park would be the best thing to do to hopefully help get a sighting again. One thing though that I did read on the blog, and that I find disturbing is that someone suggested posting the reward again. Please do not start advertising the $5000 reward in the media, newspapers and on the posters because of what he said. What some of you don't realize is that this could be jeapordize other people in NYC that own whippets (or other breed dogs) that resemble Vivi. Large rewards tend to only bring out the money hungry sharks that do not care about the animal at all, and it is not uncommon for these sharks to steal dogs out of yards that resemble a missing dog because they believe it is her/him, or just to hold that dog for ransom (so to speak). Then when they find out they have the wrong dog, they just let it loose or dispose of it in other manners. If you want to post it, just say Reward Offered. Then if a person contacts Team Vivi that they have her, or call to inquire how much the reward is, don't tell them the amount. Ask them why they want to know, have they found her, ask them to describe her and then just say that if the dog they have is indeed Vivi, and is verified in person, then you will then discuss the reward amount, but that you are not at liberty to discuss it till the dog is verified as her. If someone insists they have her, make sure a large group of you go together to verify if its her. Have one person stay in the car (to call for help if needed)and the others go to see if it is her. Take pictures of the dog shown to you (and make a note of the address your at)and try to include the person showing you the dog in the photo. If its not Vivi, you then have proof should you later find out that person probably stole someone else's dog in an attempt to get the reward. If they refuse to allow you to take any pictures of the dog they are claiming is Vivi, then more than likely they did steal someone else's dog and you need to leave there immediately. Tell the person your sorry but its not the right dog, go out to your car and drive down the street and call the police or animal control and report your suspicions. Tell them you need someone to come out to the location immediately as you fear that they might harm or kill the dog they just tried to pass off as Vivi to get the reward money. Tell them you are at the house now and you fear you might also be harmed. I guarantee you that one of them will respond to the location to investigate and make sure you are not harmed. Also, rewards tend to make money hungry people do things that can risk Vivi's life as well. Many years ago there was an incident in the town I grew up in where a large reward was offered for a lost dog. One money hungry bastard tried to catch the dog over numerous days and after getting frustrated because he couldn't get close enough to the dog to catch it, decided he would get the dog a better way. What this person did was to hunt the dog, and shoot it dead so it couldn't run away from him anymore. He then took the dead dog to the family that had offered the reward and told them he had found their dog dead and was there to collect the reward. Not knowing the father of the dog's family was a police officer, he noticed the gunshot wound and arrested the guy. The guy's explanation to the police dept and the media was "the reward poster didn't say the dog had to be alive". Please, don't post any reward amount. I don't think anybody wants to risk Vivi's life or another dog's life because of a reward amount.

Nancy, I have a better question - how does she know it's Vivi poop. Is she a DNA lab now? Does she have access to our AKC DNA lab people who are graciously helping us and have offered to test other samples we send them (no conclusive report on the sample they have). She may have poop but if it's Vivi poop I want to see the sign that says Vivi pooped here. Also, if it is Vivi poop why didn't Harry follow the trail. Non of this makes any sense.

To answer the quesiton of how the people who have seen Vivi were certain it is/was her -- Vivi has distinctive marking that has not been put on any poster or flyer and when interviewing a potential sighting they are asked to describe the dog they saw and are specifically asked if the dog had any distinctive coloring or markings. A man walking his dog was feeding her bread through a fence when she was in Flushing Cemetery. A lady saw her in her yard eating her dogs food but couldn't close her gate fast enough, Vivi bolted. She followed a little girl in Flushing and ran when the older sister came out. She wanted to play with a little boy but he was afraid of her so she bolted. All past, confirmed sightings. Flushing, Whitestone, Jamaica, Glendale - all in Queens.

Lisa E. my checks in the mail to you but I hope you don't mind if my greyhounds and whippets join in your search.

As Debbie posted, we now know exactly what and where Harry and Valerie searched and I can say, beyond a shadow of a doubt that it wasn't a hell of a lot of area. Rosa wanted to take him to other areas, he wasn't interested. This man obviously didn't do his homework on Whippets since Vivi has been all over the borough of Queens. Mike McCann has been here a few times and on his last visit he mentioned that she's breaking all the rules for a lost dog.

As far as the flyers and posters - the word REWARD should appear at the very bottom. We have removed the amount for fear that people might try to chase her as has happened in the past.

I'm thinking we should turn Harry's numbers around - probability that she's dead 1%, stolen 4%, probability that she's still out there 95%.

What Harry and Terri don't realize is that Vivi has been raised to be independent. She spent her days on a horse ranch/farm. She roamed the woods, if she was hungry she'd catch some prey and bring the tail home to Jil in the evening. Vivi is independent and head strong which works against us. A normal dog, any other dog but a sighthound would go up to people for food, Vivi lives off the land.

your description of personality and life on the farm are the best explanation of how she could still be out there. thanks

HB, you're more than welcome. Whippets, especially bitches, are very independent, I'm speaking form experience. I have 3 female dogs and my Whippet is the worst. She always gives me the "you want me to do what" look.

Terri, caught you in another lie -- earlier you said that you NEVER received a list from Rick of the search assistants, as you call them. Gee, you just said that Gail T was listed as a search assitant.

On behalf of the bloggers, you are the client, not the searcher. Why are you doing Harry's homework and why didn't Harry want to go to the areas that Rosa suggested to him up close and personal while she was driving him around.

Where is all this Vivi poop you claim Harry found along with human poop. If it was indeed Vivi poop why didn't Harry follow the trail and why wasn't a sample bagged and frozen in preparation to be sent to the DNA lab for confirmation.

Why did you say yesterday that you were working with the S&R people in preparing the report. Since when does the client prepare it's own report. A witness at a deposition doesn't prepare their own transcript so why does a client prepare their own S&R report - I just don't understand this.

Gail Thomas and Rosa have enhanced some photos of other stray dogs in the cemeteries (yes they are trying to find help for these too) and in the infrared photos taken at night there are big dogs, several of them, at feeding stations regularly. These dogs live there. The cemetery workers have never seen them and these look like big GSDX and such. Not sleek, fast, small, slippery ones like Vivi. That's how she could be right there and unseen. Also why search dogs are needed to pinpoint the areas to focus on.

A little more insight into Vivi's home life. She loves to go camping and scale rocks. She's a total outside dog, not a pampered show dog like many think. Jil and Rick are outdoor people and Vivi goes with them.

Karen, I saw those pictures. I got a laugh out of the one where the dog was, shall I say marking his territory.

HELLO!!! how are we today? bright eyed and bushy tailed?? otis's petition is growing and that's great news, huh girls? holy crap - i thought i could sling it - you guys scare me - i read the blog last night. yikes!!! i better keep a bat in my car...
hee...
i am still looking into trackers on my own starting this morning. this is for my info, only and i do not need $$, approval, etc. from anyone. should i see something cool, i will let you all know. also, diane - i understand debbie emailed you where the prints were and such, huh? spoke with debbie last night after speaking with rosa for 1 1/2 hours. yes, it was me who spoke with rosa. so, it's time we move on , give a group hug, and find that little scum, ok???
smooches!!!!!!!!!

It almost looked like it was marking the camera. No face...forgot that until just now

Darlene, I spoke to her for 45 minutes and had to go because my puppies were barking up a storm. Didn't want to have to clean up a mess.

I e-mailed Honi about another ear and the goggles Debbie wants. When you're out if you find any more poop or white hair don't touch it but bag it and let me know. The lab is willing to test anything we send them. Freeze it until I can get my paws on it.

Check with Gail T. - I understand she's already done a lot of research in this area.

I agree with the group hug - she will be found, she will go home and it will be thanks to those of you that are out there with the beer and weenies.

Good morning everyone. For those following Barbaro's progress, he is doing well. The boot is now off his laminitis leg and he has a bandage on. He was out grazing twice yesterday.

On a sad note, 2005's Horse of the Year, Lost in the Fog, was euthanized this past weekend as a result of the inoperable cancer they recently found. Although he was going through chemo, he went into distress and could not be saved. This is a tremendous loss of a champion, long before his time.

I am continuing to pray that we get something to work with in the Vivi search. If the DNA confirms that the tested scat is her's, it means she was in that spot recently. Let's keep our fingers crossed that we get a match, and that we hear soon.

you are know crowned "poop queen" diane :)
ha!!!!
i will be careful and tell the other weenies to watch for poo.
i'm sure we will run into each other soon.

Just out of curiosity...

This guy supposedly found Vivi poop but didn't pick up any fresh scents?? Wouldn't the poop be considered to be a fresh scent? Afterall, it's summer and we've had a lot of rain. That poop couldn't have been out there for too long - maybe a few days, possibly a week.

Does anyone know how a dog leaves behind its' scent? Can a scent be picked up just by a dog walking or does the dog have to pee or poop in order for the scent to be detected and if so, how long is the detection period?

Was the poop found and then the trail went dead, which may lead someone to think that the dog was picked up and carried away from that point? Is there a detectable scent that may determine whether or not she may have been injured?

I'm sorry for so many questions, but I thought that an "old scent" was "OLD" - like months old. I thought a "fresh scent" was more like days or weeks.

Lisa E.

I think President of Poop would be more dignified

lisa - no clue on my end, dearie. i just run around. that's my job :)

karen: good one!!! unfortunately, diane, at your expense. sorry about that.
is there a special presidential seal?? ech....
ha!!!

beth: it'll all work out always does. we've nbeen through this type of crap for months. just rolls off now. :)

You're right Darlene. I also think the recent heavy rains probably would have removed any "recent" scents, which could explain why Harry didn't find any.

I was just looking on Harry's web site and it's very interesting. Apparently, all the animal or person has to do is walk and thousands of "scents" are deposited with each step. These "scents" are sometimes detectable up to a year or more!!

According to this website, rain helps bring the scent to the surface which makes it easier to detect, but heavy rain can also wash it away. Also heat can play a role in making the scent less detectable. (I'm going by memory here, so don't quote me on all this info. This may not be 100% accurate. Too many brain cells lost!! LOL)

So, we've had heat and heavy rain and supposedly poop was found. Poop doesn't hold up too well with heat and rain. Which makes me even more curious why this wasn't considered to be a "fresh" scent.

Lisa E.

http://www.k9sardog.com/usesardog.html

That's the link to Harry's site.

Lisa E.

I think this blog is way too interested in the mysteries of poop and pee

You're probably right Kathy, but the only thing that we've got from Harry is a load of sh**!! LOL

One of the funniest posts that I remember reading is someone asking if Whippet poop looked different from other poop! LOL

But, all kidding aside, I would think that in this case poop would be a good thing.

Lisa E.

Hell, call me what you want - just find this little devil dog.

If the poop was recognizable as Vivi poop it was either so dried out from heat or was fresh. Not really being a poop expert but knowing that dogs do identify each other by smelling that particular part of their body - I'd say yes, there is definitely a scent that could be followed. Rosa said nothing about poop so I think it's a poopment of Terri's imagination.

Darlene, plastic baggies and plastic gloves or paper towels/tissues are the supply of the day. I know that B-J is also carrying plastic gloves.

Good Morning Everyone,

I can honestly say I didn't sleep to well last night as I'm sure no one else did. Today is a different day. We are team ViVi and we will bring ViVi home because we didn't give up. Harry's trip there was just another lesson learned and a expensive one at that. I'm very disappointed in how things were handled but as far as I'm concerned it's the past and ViVi is still out there so I'm going to work to get the flyers in mail.

Darlene, I read that you are looking for a tracker. Well count me in for money because I need answers. Answers we should have gotten when Harry was there. LET'S MOVE ON BLOGGERS AND FIND OUR GIRL.

Darlene, 100 colored posters in non-glare sleeves and 50 others going out to you today via 2-day UPS, so you should get them by Friday. Can I add tape to the package?

I just read something that has literally made me sick to my stomach. It has nothing to do with Vivi, but it is "poop" related.

They are saying that one of the possible sources for the E-coli spinach thing is workers pooping and peeing in the fields. This gets into the soil, and is then ingested into the plant. No washing will solve the problem because it is part of the plant!!!

Can you believe this sh**!!! LOL

Hi,

I haven't been reading the blog for a while, but I felt compelled to comment on the "statistics" above. As someone who graduated college with a degree in Mathematics and who studied probabiliy theory, I find his statistics to be completely ludacris.

Harry has not listed all the options. For example, if he says there is a 4% chance that she died and he did not find that spot, then he obviously has left some spots unsearched. Logic dictates that in that same unsearched spot there could be fresh scents, and that could be the spot where Vivi is hanging out. Where is the statistic for that option?

I for one do not believe that someone was able to capture Vivi. If all the volunteers haven't been able to do it so far, what makes him believe someone else could. And, if they did, then it was likely only because she was probably hurt or pregnant and unable to run away like she usually does. In that case, she probably would have been seen by a vet, and there is at least some possibility a vet would have recognized this as the famous missing dog and checked her chip.

Rather than have faith in Harry's undocumented statistics, I would rather have faith in a benevolent God who loves all the creatures he made. With all the prayers going out for Vivi, I can't believe that God would allow bad to come her way. I think she is still out there, existing in the wild, and Harry just didn't look in the right places.

Just my opinion, for what it is worth...

ok, POOP is POOP. It's not that it looks any different it's the size. For instance, my greyhound's is much larger than my 25 pound whippets, my 36 pound whippet's is larger than his 25 pound litter mates, on down the line.

The poop that the lab has right now had animal hair in it (not on it) which lead Rick to believe that, aside from it's size being about right, it might have been hers eating our wildlife.

diane: no offense to being poop queen. at least when you take pic's you don't look CHINESE!!!!!
i have plenty of "poop" bags for my small army. that's beat the crap (no pun intended) out of sitting shotgun to liverwurst (BLAH***) and stinky bait!!!! baggies and gloves it is :) hoory - something that doesn't make me vomit!!!!

marty: thank, babycakes!!! just doing some research - that's all :)

kathy (CO): i think the blog should be renamed:
"AS THE POOP TURNS"

barbara V: thanks darling!!!! then i can go straight from work and slap some of those bad boys up by friday :) saves me a trip tracking debbie and diane down form here. GROOOOOVY!!!!! we have plenty of tape also but thank you!!!!!

No prob, Darlene, just let us know if you need more. WE BELIEVE should be this group's name!

gail (IL): 2+2 = .... duh!!!!
wow - i am impressed. you must be one smart cookie :)

I wasn't going to blog anymore, but here goes...

If someone or a group can get a tracker to come to NYC and to do a thorough search of Vivi's possible hideout areas, I will be willing to donate to that cause, too.

I am surprised we haven't received any further report or details from Terri. Lots of promises made, seems like there's a little problem with delivery on those promises.

and now.....the latest on "As The Poop Turns"............... Love it - keep up the spirit ladies - yesterday was a hard one to handle but today is another day that God has made.

i'm trying gals. with some help of a few behind the scenes folks :) that way, there will be no one to yell at but me if it turns out to be a bust.
pam: don't stop coming here just because of yesterday. you cannot justify loosing a great bunch just because things got out of control, can you? the things you guys are doing for the other animals are worth a million times more than that BS from yesterday!!! think of Duke, Duke the bulldog, Otis, and Doogie. c'mon - they need US - not just me - US. so, please don't leave due to words flying yesterday, ok??? AND THE WEENIE QUEEN WOULD MISS EVERYONE :)
barbara V: will hit you up when i need more. let's see how quickly i can run and post without hurting myself this time, shall we?

touche, kathy!!!!! now that's the spirit!! don't make me drink too much and get on here with my new fall line of doggie wear!! no one wants that... hee!

Pam in MN - I was saying the same thing about not blogging again after last night, but some of the kinder and nicer people convinced me otherwise.

First, I want to apologize to everyone for losing my temper on the blog. As I said, I considered being accused of doing anything to hurt an animal or these people I am fond of as being the "ultimate insult" and blew up. I apologize for blowing up instead of praying hard about it first.

Gail in Illinois - I am so glad you said this about the statistics. I majored in Mathematics all through high school, so when I got my Business degree in Management of Information Systems I also took a huge amount of Mathematics and minored in Statistics as well. Harry's area searched (in such a large area) could not possibly predict such statistics. The sampling was too small and margin of error far too great. I would like an explanation of where he came up with these figures. Must have dreamed them or something.

Darlene - absolutely no offense taken but am I the Flyer Queen first or the Poop Queen first. You're confusing me now?

Barbara V - curious - those flyers you're sending Darlene - do they say Still Missing of Lost Dog????

Terri is probably sound asleep.

Diane - Let's si
