According to the TV shows, they can tell if its a male or a female and what was last eaten.. Yikees!!

DNA will not tell how old poop is however, if it is there in the summer it can't be that old.

I never realized there was so much to "poop". Maybe they'll tell us what she is eating - that would be nice to know. Wish we could follow it like bread crumbs to her little den.

Your right Karen. I know that my dogs Poop starts to decompose rather quickly and if there is a heavy rain its mush!

We had a mini search thru Forest Park the other day and you don't want to know what Bonnie and I found on the ground. Talk about Yikees!!

Gads, right on. They do dissolve. I should know I pick up enough of it. And the rains were so heavy to. Whippet poops - ummmm....what do they look like - or how are they different from hound poops?

The owners probably can tell a Vivi poop. I can tell my dog droppings apart - so that seems very reasonable. I bet it is Vivi's poop!

My experience with Whippets and their poop is:
since most females are smaller than males, their poop is naturally smaller in size than the males. I can tell my male's poops from my females anyday of the week.

Lois: Sorry to hear about Tucker and I hope good news is on the horizon, not only for him, but also for Vivi.

I don't blog any more but thought I'd come on and give you a little more explanation about the poop.

First a call was made to AKC and once they heard what it was for they gave the person the phone number of their lab. A very nice and helpful person at AKC's DNA lab said that everything depends on the quality of the poop. They have Vivi's sire's DNA on record so the dam's DNA was not necessary. The sire's owner has authorized the AKC to release his DNA for us to use and the lab said that they would keep it on record in case we come up with any other samples we need analyzed. Right now the poop is sitting in a freezer at an undisclosed location and will be sent priority FedEx to the lab on Tuesday and our contact is awaiting it's arrival. The specimen must be kept frozen to preserve it - Fortunately there's a lab in the building where I work and they donated a thick styrofoam shipping box along with some ice packs - thanks Dr. L. I also want to thank all those that have assisted me in making this possible, and especially one very special person - you know who you are.

As far as determining what the donor has been eating, yes, apparently this is possible. Half of the poop was taken to a local vet to be analyzed. I haven't seen it but understand that there was a lot of hair in it - probably squirrel, possibly rodent, etc.

Obviously we don't know for sure if this poop came from Vivi but like Sedona said above, if you have numerous dogs you can definitely tell who did what so it's always a possibility.

Thanks Diane for this update. Hopefully this will be very useful for not only this but I wonder if it might also help Harry Oakes and Valorie with their search as well (if it proves to be Vivi's). Hope some was saved by the vet for this reason.

I would of never thought something like this could be done. Thanks Diane for helping with the idea... I think it's such an interesting concept. Since there haven't been any sightings for so long it would be great if it could be determined with any amount of certainty that it was Vivi's poop. Even sightings so often times are questionable so this might be a way to determine if Vivi really is in the area. Do you know how long it takes to get the results?

Another question if you're out there Diane. Could you tell if it was old or fresh?

I think it was recent poop because I read somewhere that whippet poop dissolves quickly. Not sure though

I haven't been able to post in a long time. Up until two weeks ago I have been checking the blog every day but only have had time very early in the morning. Our business has been so very busy there hasn't been time for anything else. Plus I was getting ready for a 3 week trip to Florida (where I am now). We have a new house and are renting it out this winter so we have to get it ready. I don't have internet service here so I drove to a Barnes and Noble and paid to get on the internet. I have been worried about Vivi and its been awful not getting any news. I was hoping to find that she had been rescued. I really believe she has puppies and that's why no sightings lately. I hope the DNA proves positive.

I'll be back in Maine in another 1 1/2 weeks. Hope everyone is doing well.

WHATS DA POOP GUYS? / o;

ARE THERE ANY MICHIGAN READERS WHO HAVE ROOM IN THEIR HEARTS,OR HOMES, FOR A CHOCOLATE/BLACK LAB? (or could you foster her until the rescue can find her a permanent home?)

I just received the following info from a friend. I will forward contact information to anyone interested, or you can contact the petfinder address listed here. (The lady who sent me this already has Noah's ark at her house so can't keep Kristy for herself.)

"A woman I volunteer with asked me for help in finding a new home for her choclate/black lab because she and her husband just leave her tied to a chain pretty much 24/7. I have been taking her to adoption events in the Lansing area for the last couple of months, but no luck so far. Then the other day she said she and her husband have changed their mind and if I don't find a home for her by Saturday, they are just going to keep her. But she will end up living on a chain the rest of her life!!!! Plus she will never get any vet care again. (they had not taken her to the vet in 3 yrs). I had to update all her vet care.
Please, can someone adopt her or take her into their foster care program before Saturday.

I was on the way back from an agility trial with my dog's teacher and we passed a van full of kids. With a bumper sticker more or less like that.

Hey ladies happy labor Day everyone, did anyone see the news on Steve Irwin the crocodile hunter from Australia, he got stuck by a stingrays tail and it put a hole in his heart and he has died. I loved that guy, we was the best to watch wrestle those crocodiles and give them homes in the zoo. I feel for his wife and 2 kids. Such a shame. What a great guy.

Just have been listening to the news about Steve Irwin. What a tragedy. He has done so much for the environment, animals and raising people's awareness about what they can do for all animals. I feel so bad for all of us. I'm waiting to see where we can post condonlences to his family. He was so proud of his family and I can't imagine what they are going through.

I had a few minutes and thought I'd check out what's happening.

First, belated Happy Birthday ladies.

I have really not formed an opinion one way or the other regarding Mr. Oaks - I am neither against nor in favor of his coming - I am, however, in favor of anything that can safely get little Vivi home safe and sound.

My only concern is something that Mike McCann said when he was here last weekend - Vivi has broken all the rules for a lost sighthound. Basically she's writing her own book.

I trust that Terri, in her wisdom, has advised Mr. Oaks that Vivi is a Whippet, has been on her own for 6 months and has managed to survive through all kinds of NY weather. I also trust that Mr. Oaks is aware that sighthounds are a special breed, not like any other dog.

Terri, for your information, I know that Rick left some scent items which I hope are with a non-smoker so as not to contaminate them. If Mr. Oaks also needs scent items of Jil and Rick I have those items in a zip lock bag which I carry with me at all times. I'd be happy to meet him and turn them over to him and only him.

Also, Terri, I don't smoke nor does anybody that I associate with on a daily basis. I probably have the strong scent of Whippet, Greyhound and German Shep on me but no smoke so if I can help him in any way, let me know. It's no secret how to contact me.

I hope that you are keeping Rick informed of the status since, as you know, he has become the voice of Jil, Rick and Bo, and a better voice they couldn't have picked.

I also would just like us all, myself included, to remember that Vivi has become all of ours but she is owned by Jil and Paul.

Having said that, have a wonderful Labor Day everybody, I'm going to spend some time in the sun while it lasts.

I lit a candle for Steve Irwin. There is a Steve listing. I read that the 126 yr-old turtle at the Austrailai Zoo, Harriet, died on Saturday. It's like maybe she had some intuition about Steve. At least I know the animals will have a true guardian angel looking after them now, here and above. I still can't believe he's gone. Especially with all the creeps walking around the world.

Ruby or anyone: Can the same person sign Duke's petition more than once. I've signed it a while ago but I will again if it's O.K.

Margot, I'm not sure about signing it with the same name twice. I've signed my daughters, sons and ex hubbys name and it worked. Just so you guys know they did an article about Vivi here too, it was maybe 2 months ago but it was through Associated Press. The original ad ran a week before that . This could be whats going on here. I also remember they did not want news media while they were searching.

Ruby, I wish I could answer your rain question but you'll have to direct that to Mother Nature.

The poop is still on ice and is being sent to the lab tomorrow, priority overnight FedEx. The lab has been closed for the long weekend so we couldn't send it out. They will have it on Wednesday and then they have to process it. As of right now I have no idea how long it will take.
