From today's column:
Little dogs aren't for toying

It's too easy to blame Paris Hilton.
After all, teeny-tiny dogs were hot millennia ago, when "The Simple Life" was indeed just that.
Consider, for example, the pear-shaped Pekingese and the monk-guarding Lhasa apso, which both predate Christianity. In the intervening centuries, humans continued to breed dogs for small size and big personality, from Renaissance royalty, which rarely posed for a portrait without a toy spaniel in hand, to those kooky Victorians, whose fondness for pugs reaffirmed the very modern notion of "so ugly, it's cute."
At the kickoff to this century, toy dogs are as popular as ever. Much of this has to do with the unfortunate "marketing" of them as accessories - warmer than a scarf, cuter than most Dooney & Bourkes.
But before you make a decade-plus commitment, remember that little dogs come with big caveats, including:
It's anatomy, Watson. Most toy breeds have small litters - perhaps only two or three pups. And they can easily have price tags in the thousands.
A well-bred puppy generally doesn't cost more than a pet-store puppy that likely came from a puppymill. (If you have to ask what a puppymill is, then you need to do more homework.)
Consider a rescue dog, or buy from a reputable breeder who does appropriate health screenings and who insists on meeting you in person. And be prepared for the inevitable waiting list.
"Do not buy a puppy over the Internet," warns Darlene Arden, author of the newly revised "Small Dogs, Big Hearts: A Guide to Caring for Your Little Dog" (Howell, $19.99). "If they take VISA and MasterCard, run."
The view from the curb never changes. Given their diminutive stature, toy dogs have a different world view - literally.
"If you only come up to people's ankles, what does the world look like?" asks Arden rhetorically. To get the idea, she suggests you lie down on your driveway next to your car and take in the panorama. "Everything is humongous."
Swooping down on toy dogs, or even patting them on the head, can lead to skittishness and fearfulness; instead, it's best if you sit on the floor for your initial training, or put the dog on a slightly higher surface such as a wide bench.
But don't let him get too accustomed to the altitude. "If you pick up a dog, you are elevating his status, and there are times when you don't want to do that," says Arden. To prevent your Papillon from becoming a Napoleon, let him walk places on his own steam, unless he's truly tired.
A choke, prong or most any collar is a no-no for toys, which are prone to collapsing tracheas. Instead, Arden recommends using a harness. If you must use a collar, use a flat one, and no jerks or pops, please.
At least they have their health. Well ... toy dogs are often far more delicate than your average Fido. Perhaps the most extreme example are Italian greyhounds, which can and do break legs just by jumping off couches.
Hypoglycemia is a life-threatening concern in toy puppies, Arden warns. "You can go out in the morning and come home to a dead puppy that night." (Triage: "Put sugar water or Karo syrup on the dog's gums and run to the vet as fast as you can.") For this reason - and because toys develop more slowly than larger breeds - most breeders keep them until 12 weeks of age.
Did we mention dental problems? A Chihuahua has the same number of teeth as a Great Dane - just less room for them, Arden notes.
"Toy dogs can retain deciduous teeth. You'll see some Yorkies living with double row of teeth" - making daily brushing that much more critical.
Children optional. While there are exceptions to this rule - the sturdy pug come to mind - small dogs are often not the best choice for a families with youngsters, who often take the "toy" label more than literally.
"Anything a child can pick up, he can drop, and most small-dog breeders will not sell to homes with children," Arden says, adding that socializing toys to kids is still a must. "If they don't get used to children as puppies, they never will like them."
Love the one you're with. Potential dog owners need to contemplate how a breed's hard-wired instincts will mesh with their lifestyle. Don't like frenetic barking? Don't get a herder. Don't like independence? Don't get a hound.
And ... if you can't provide regular companionship, don't get a toy, which was bred to crave interaction with humans. Nine-to-5-ers might want to hire pet walkers for a midday visit, or enroll their dog in day care, Arden suggests.
Expect puddle-jumping. "Toy dogs can take up to a year and a little more to be reliably house trained," Arden says, "and some never are." (The Bichon and its cousins, the Maltese, Coton de Tulear and Bolognese are tough customers in this regard.)
Because toys tend to lose heat rapidly, they'll need a sweater or coat to go outside in colder weather, another barrier to housebreaking. "Unless you're willing to sleep in sweats and get up at 3 a.m. for the first year," Arden says cheerily, "don't get a toy puppy."

I wish someone could send this over to Paris Hilton and ALL the people that carry the poor little things around like they are a purse, or a hot item of the day , in reality they are probably hot, hot from being held so long...
The AKC classifies the Lhasa Apso as Non-Sporting not a Toy. I have a Lhasa and she is 17 lbs and 19" long (not overweight, but trim and fit) and not something you can just tuck under your arm. Well I can't anyway. The next dog I get will definately be a toy, one that poops things that look like
M & M' and makes pee pee's that looks like rain drops...
She is awfully cute though!!!
Guilty as charged. I'm a toy owner; always have been. Proud mom of two of the most adorable Pekingese who ever walked God's green earth. Yes, I carried them everywhere we went. I love them and miss them more than words can express. They are in my heart and soul for all time.
Currently, a "pom-mom" to a tiny Pomeranian named Bijou. He is spoiled beyond imagination and I can assure you he's carried everywhere I go. Sometimes I take along his doggie stroller or put him in my purse and you'd be surprised the stores and malls he visits!
Oh, and I've never had a problem with "house training" toy breeds. Don't get me wrong here. I absolutely love all dogs. In fact, we have a Great Pyrenees, a Collie, and a Jack Russell in the family too. I just find toys so darn cute. :-)
Hope everyone moves here. Hope to see you all.
Psalm 33 NIV
18 The eyes of the LORD are on those who fear Him,
on those whose hope is in His unfailing love,

21 In Him our hearts rejoice,
for we trust in His holy name.
22 May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD,

Trying to move here, Kathleen. I'll try again and hope my server doesn't cancel out. Hope Vivi shows her pretty face and goes to a searcher. The weather is perfect for a homecoming.
This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear Him, and delivers them. Oh taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusts in Him.
Good morning Daddy God. We are beginning a new day with you filled with anticipation and expectation of your sweet deliverance. How glorious are your deeds as you care for all that we have brought to your throne. Thank you Daddy for leading Vivi to shelter, food and water. Thank you for watching over her and showing her your tender mercies and unending love. Daddy God we ask you to bring Vivi to the rescuer you have chosen. Continue to speak to Vivi and fill her heart with your trust so she will go to that rescuer willingly. Increase her desire for human companionship more and more everyday. Give her dreams of home and release her from fear. Fill her with your peace Daddy and lead her to the "meeting place" of deliverance and home. Daddy God, bless mightily the army of rescuers you have brought together to do your will in this earth. Hold them in your arms and cuddle them as you guide them to Vivi. Take control of every step they take and lead them forward Daddy God to victory in the task you have set before them. Give them your wisdom. Let every decision they make be prompted by your Holy Spirit. Lead and guide all of our wandering ones into rescue and deliverance Daddy. Vivi, Biggie, Sniffles, Rags, Faithful, Little Aussie, Mommy, Daddy, and Baby Girl pup, Apple Riley, Holly (lead her out of the desert to safety Daddy) Precious Hosanna, Buddy, Annie, African Grey, Patterson, Pointer, Jack Russel, and Grey Tabby. Hi everyone - another campaign - if you have time, please check this out and sign the petition - apparently two border guards are facing prison time and are being sued by an illegal alien for doing their job.......go figure
http://www.grassfire.org/142/petition.asp?PID=11572091
Have you guys read the latest post? I just can't take this kind of stuff anymore - my heart is breaking.........what can we do girls?
Maybe we can do the same thing we did for the other Duke. If we had fax numbers or email addresses.
I thought I signed the petition but I guess I didn't, so I just signed and have e mailed all my friends and asked them to sign also, please do the same and help this Duke.
Where do we go to sign the petition for Duke.
Go to the newest post, The Dukes of Hazzard, read all about Duke and there you can sign the petition. Lets save another dog wrongly accused.
Hi Gang - speaking of petitions - letter writing - etc. I just spoke with my contact regarding Otis and here is her latest
The hearing has been postponed to October so there’s more time to write letters. Also they have switched judges because the current judge had a greyhound mix that passed away recently. What a coincidence.
I will post soon so keep encouraging people to write. Thanks for all you do.
So - there you have it - we have a lot more time to encourage others to write about Otis - I am waiting to get the info on the new judge and will post as soon as I get it.
Now that we have some time for Otis - lets get going on Duke - anybody have the info on where to write/fax?
I also found out that scumbag is in jail - not out free somewhere - so at least that is a good thing.
I just read this and I am sorry to post
A polar bear operated on by the surgeon for Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro died just hours after surgery Monday.
Dr. Dean Richardson operated on Alcor, a 750-pound bear with two badly broken bones just above his right paw, on Monday afternoon and stabilized the wrist during surgery with locking plates.
The bear had been stable and was waking from anesthesia on his way back to Ohio when he died, the University of Pennsylvania's George D. Widener Hospital said in a statement Monday night.
Meri-Lou - we must be on the same schedule - I was just going to post the same. Sad sad sad - but on a good note - Barbaro is doing very well.

Posted this on the Vivi Voices thread, but posting it here too.
Kathleen M (Kathy from Bayside) - you got an email that has been going around for a while called the Nigerian scheme. Good thing you didn't responsd. The scam asks you to provide personal and financial info then will ask you to withraw money from your bank in order to get the money they are supposedly giving away. Many people have been fooled by this and lost lots of money. It could also be a "phishing" attack. You are right to be careful.

I just signed the petition for Duke. He has to be saved. It is disgusting how people treat animals.
I was so sorry to read about the polar bear, but I'm sure Dr. Richardson did all that was possible.
Any news about our Miss Vivi?
Just signed the petition for Duke, why do people have to be so cruel? It looks like there are a lot of signatures just today so that should help.
Keeping the faith for VIVI in Texas.
I sent the petition out to as many people as I could. I really don't have that many to send to, but I guess all names help. I feel so bad for Duke. It breaks my heart.
I signed the petition also - last I looked we are at 366 and we need 2,000 -
I signed the DUKE petition and so did my daughter. I also just emailed the owner to find out a fax number and email address so we can bombard them..We don't have a lot of time.
I'm glad in a way that the Otis trial has been put off. I can work more on getting signatures and faxes to the right people.
Damn people make me sick. This Pitty Duke, is being treated the same way Duke the bully was treated. Makes me sick. I again say, my whippet has a pit girl friend and its the sweetest thing I've seen when they are together.
SIGN THE NEW DUKE PETITION AND BE SURE TO FAX/EMAIL OR WRITE TO THE PROPER PEOPLE TO GET THE THING THAT HURT OTIS PUT AWAY!
THANKS GUYS FOR THE INFO..CATHY and MARGOT
Good Ruby - let us know what the owner says
I also signed the petition. This just cannot happen!
Glad There's more time for letter writing re Otis.Hopefully the old Judge will pass on all the letters and faxes to the new judge. Hey, wouldn't it be great if someone took care of that scumbag while he's in jail. There's a lot to be said for"an eye for an eye"
How can I get a copy of the Duke petition to sign and distribute?
I was told by my contact that the old letters are still good - they will be used but continue to get the word out and have more people write and fax letters. I'm still waiting on the info for the new judge but will post as soon as I hear something.
The Duke petition is at the very beginning of the post "Dukes of Hazard?" - you sign from there and can e-mail to friends.

I signed the petition, my daughter signed it and I sent the information to 20 people I know, including Gary Bouge of the Contra Costa Times. He has a pet column. Unfortunate thing is the time frame. I hope at least he'll sign the petition for DUKE! Another friend has signed it, making 3 people I got so far.

I'm on a mission to save Duke and get the abuser of Otis put away!
Good girls, Ruby, Kathy, Darlene, ... you go girls. Going to sign myself and send out in a minute.
GOOD NEWS! (excuse the caps please)
Mom's bone scan came back, and no signs of this cancer spreading anywhere else. They feel it is confined to this one small area, and will do surgery next week to remove this area.
I cannot tell you all how much your prayers, candles, e-mails, blogs, etc. have helped me get through the period of Madison's decline, Mom's cancer and Tink's illness. All three seem to be much better. Thank you is not enough, God bless you all is all I can say. Love you.
Now it is time for the Vivi prayers to be answered. Where is our wiley little whippet girl? Time to see that pretty face and come to someone for loving.
I have signed the petition for Duke and continue to forward to everyone and anyone I can. Let's save that fur baby - if anyone can do it - this group can.
Kathleen,
Glad to hear the good news about your mom.
Great news, Kathleen. I think our candles are working. My son e-mailed me and said he signed the petition. He forwarded it to others. We can make a difference. Now if only Vivi would come out and go with the foot soldiers.
Hey Ruby, the pup Fiona is doing very well, I would
love to have the email fom your friend that is

Psalm 113 (NIV)
1 Praise the LORD. [a]
Praise, O servants of the LORD,
praise the name of the LORD.
2 Let the name of the LORD be praised,
both now and forevermore.
3 From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets,
the name of the LORD is to be praised.
4 The LORD is exalted over all the nations,
his glory above the heavens.
5 Who is like the LORD our God,
the One who sits enthroned on high,
6 who stoops down to look
on the heavens and the earth?
Father, Thank You so much for the prayers You have answered, and the support and protection You have given us in all the trials and sorrow we have seen.
As Scripture says "Who are we that You should notice us?" and yet You love all You have created, and do care when we are in need. As much as we love our own children (and animals), and as much as our parents have loved us---that is only a foreshadowing of the love You hold for Your people; as imperfect as we are!! We cannot stand without You, stay with us Father, and help us stay with You!
Continue to help and protect Vivi, and use Your NYC footsoldiers to bring her home to Jil! Listen as we lift our prayers to You!

Duke, Your Creator is the Lord of Justice, and vindicator of His creation, we put You in Hands. Father, Help of the weak, and helpless, let the courts hear our pleas on Duke's behalf, as we speak in Your stead, for those who have no voice.

thanks Sharon..Its nice that you mentioned DUKE.I'd appreciate a prayer for Otis the Greyhound also..
I'd also appreciate one for my daughter.
I signed the petition for Duke as many times as it would let me. I viewed the photos of him but couldn't get through his story. I guess I have a real soft spot for our furry friends in need. What a beautiful boy he is. Please everyone let's get these signatures and save him. He so deserves it.
Laura
Hello everybody..I am duke's mom and I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for all of your efforts..As soon as I know from my attorney who we can email/mail/fax to help save Duke I will let you know either here or on his website...Thanks again the public people have been terrific while NONE of the politicians would help. The town of Islip supports us but cant do anything to help its a civil matter.
Ruby,
Otis is mentioned in the last paragraph. Can I have your daughter's first name?
Thanks!
Psalm 92:1-8
It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto your name Oh Most High. To show forth your loving kindness in the morning, and your faithfulness every night. Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltry; upon the harp with a solemn sound. For you Lord have made me glad through your work, I will triumph in the works of your hands. Oh Lord, how great are your works! And your thoughts are very deep. A brutish man knows not, neither does a fool understand this. When the wicked spring as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; it is that they shall be destroyed forever. BUT YOU LORD ARE MOST HIGH FOR EVERMORE.
Daddy God, we thank you for all the miracles you have given to us with your Mighty Hand. Thank you Daddy for your love and for listening to our prayers. We are so grateful to you for protecting and guiding Vivi. Thank you Daddy for the provision you have given to her, food, water and shelter in the safety of your arms. Continue to speak to Vivi, Daddy God and fill her with your Spirit so she will trust and run to the rescuer you have chosen. Bring her home safely today Daddy God. We are looking to you and you alone for you are the one who holds all creation within your loving hands. Daddy God, we plead with you to save Duke. Don't allow mankind to destroy your precious creation any more. Rise up in your Glory and put an end to this senseless killing of your innocent creation. Bless all of our signatures Daddy God and provide a judge who knows and loves your creation. We thank you Daddy for keeping the man who murdered Otis and others in jail. We ask you to cause him to remain there Daddy for that is where he belongs. Avenge the blood of the innocent Daddy. We thank you Daddy for the good news about Dante. How thrilled and filled with joy we are at the work of your mighty hand. Thank you for the good report on Kathleen's mom, Mary Ann. Oh Daddy, we are so blessed by your love and tender care. HEY EVERY ONE!!! HERE IS AN UPDATE FROM VALERIE
Hello Everyone,
Just a short note to let you know that Dante is doing well. I had a scare on Saturday evening when I discovered another lump on Dante. It is right next to his throat. I was able to take him into the vet today and get it checked out and she said it was a lipoma/ fatty mass. She aspirated it and put it on a slide and only fat cells could be seen. Thank God!
He had his acupuncture a week ago today and now only has to go every 6 weeks as long as he stays this healthy. So, the plan is to be seen every 6 weeks or longer. J He has maintained his weight within ounces during the last 3 visits for acupuncture which is fabulous. His energy level is high and he is playing quite a bit.
Trotter is doing well also. His broken tail is now healed. It didn’t heal straight so he now has added character. He is still trying to adjust to a puppy in the house but for the most part is doing well with it. Any changes in Trotter’s routine messes him up for quite a while. He is definitely my “special boy”.
It is hard to believe that Zipper has been here for 4 weeks now. He is doing so well. What an easy puppy. He is getting so big so fast. He grew 2 inches in 3 weeks and is now 18 pounds. He will be 16 weeks old on this Thursday and starts “Puppy Kindergarten” on this future Saturday.
His one downfall is that he gets car sick really bad. If he isn’t vomiting, he is sliming everything. If anyone has any remedies or suggestions on how to get him over this, please forward them to me.
Zipper loves his big brothers, especially Dante. Dante definitely has a little shadow. The 2 of them always seem to be cuddling, sunbathing or playing together. Trotter tries to join in during the play time but he never learned how to play without biting too hard so the other 2 are reserved in their play sessions with him. I really think Dante is very happy to have someone else that he can play with in a way that he likes to play and without fear of a puncture wound.
Once again, I thank everyone for their continued support and prayers. I REALLY appreciate it. Dante, Trotter, Zipper and I continue to pray every evening for continued “health, happiness, and to be cancer free”. Now, if we could just get Vivi back home
Sharon,
My daughter is another Cathleen, different spelling. Thanks. She's fine but lost the baby.
Thanks Duke's Denise. Keep us posted for sure! Lots of good people on this blog and they'll do their best for DUKE!
Ruby, i'm so sorry about the baby. I'll be praying for your daughter.
denise:
we will support in any way possible. let us knpw asap who and where to contact - we'll be on them like flies!!!!! stay strong and kiss duke for all of us. he's a beautiful boy!! the laws must change on these issues and we have to start taking control gals. we can change things if we all band together. we're a pesky mob and these politicians will move if we keep on them. gals: get those emails forwarded - less than 2 days. we're almost a third there!!!!!
I went begging to all my friends to sign this petition and to send it out to as many of their friends as possible. I have seen my friends names on the list and hopefully their friends will sign as well.
Oh Ruby, my heart is broken for all of you. I know you must be crushed right now. Please give your daughter a big hug and tell her Tink and I are so sorry to hear of this. If we can do anything, please do not hesitate to write me.
Love Kathleen and Tinkerbell
yeah, kay!!!! me too. i wish i worked at IBM right now - 2000 would be a piece of cake.... damn..
Ruby,
So sorry to hear about the baby. I will send this prayer over to my mom, too. My mom has an uncanny ability to petition God for babies for women who have had a hard time having babies, or families who have been trying to adopt. I will be with her in a grocery store, or Target, our out to dinner, and strangers (to me) will come up and say "Thanks so much for praying with us, our son/daughter's family just brought home a new baby. She doesn't talk about it much, just says God is using her to intercede, and to build up her own faith. I didn't think too much about it the first couple of times it happened, but now everytime I'm with her it seems like people are telling her "baby stories". Long story short--- I will give her Cathleen's name.
(The key, however, is that you have to be praying for it too, and when the baby comes, thank God...not my Mom. These things are not coincidences.)
hey everyone, I went back on and added a few more names this am. over 2 yrs in a shelter and now they want to put him down and the other dog that he supposedly bit has passed on, let Duke go back home to his mom.
yeah, debbie and they don't even think that it was him anyway!!!! total BS
Oh Ruby, I have been out this morning and I am so terribly sorry about your daughter loosing the baby, please give her my love, and take care of yourself..Joanne

Ruby I am so sorry to hear about your daughter - it is so hard - and hard for you to as you were anticipating this grandbaby. Hugs and kisses to you both.

Everyone is doing so good on getting signatures - we're up to 650+ but need 2,000 - so we have a ways to go. Glad to hear from Dukes mom - but does anyone know why we can continue past this Friday? Has there been an extension?
