Isabella: Katrina's sad legacy

Isabella_013_1 Meet Isabella.
-
She is the face of Katrina's lost animals, one year after the hurricane struck and devastated the Gulf Coast.
-
Isabella, all of 4 months old, was either born or abandoned on the streets of New Orleans.
-
Suffering from mange that was irritated by the pile of fiberglass that she used for a bed, she is all but hairless. Her bleeding skin is as cracked as a lunar suface,  her extremities are swollen, and her pasterns are weakened from malnutrition. Any attempt to sit or lie down is excruciatingly painful for her.
-
"When the FEMA workers first saw her, they ran to their trucks to find any food they had to give her.  It took them a couple days to get her to trust  them enough to grab her," says Kim Johnson, an animal rescue volunteer from Tualatin, Ore., who learned about Isabella and circulated her photos on the Internet. " When she realized they didn't mean to do her any  harm, all she wanted was love."
-
Isabella was eventually caught by the FEMA workers last week and taken to the Southern Animal Foundation (www.southernanimalfoundation.org), a  non-profit animal hospital in New Orleans, where she is  being treated.  The web site has a donation button for those who want to contribute to Isabella's rehabilitation, as well as their overall mission of reducing the city's population of stray dogs aIsabella_007_1nd cats through spay-neuter programs.
-
But Isabella is only one sad story amid a sea of heartbreak.  One year after Katrina blighted the Gulf Coast and stranded an estimated 50,000 companion animals, many of those that survived and evaded capture are now feral, with only the streets to call home.
-
Because many of them were never spayed or neutered, they are breeding, bringing into the word a new generation of puppies and kittens that know only asphalt and glass shards instead of comfy dog beds and squeaky toys.
-
Kim says friends who have visited New Orleans recently report seeing animals frequently in the Lower 9th Ward --which is not as innocuous as it sounds.
-
"At this point, most of these animals hide during the day and only come out at night, because they're reverting to feral behavior," Kim explains. " So seeing so many animals in broad daylight, especially when it's so hot out, is a testament to just how many animals are out there, and how hungry they are."
-
During this week of intense Katrina coverage, Kim asks us to remember Katrina's voiceless victims.
-
"The photos of Isabella would break your heart no matter when you saw them, but ... this is the condition of some of the thousands of animals that are still on the streets a year after Katrina, and ... the media hasn't even mentioned the ongoing animal situation,"says Kim, who made three trips to New Orleans after the hurricane to help with animal rescue. "... The animal situation has never stopped being a Katrina disaster, and the animals are still out there suffering, starving, breeding, and dying every day."

To sad for words.:(

A note from the Animal Hospital about little Isabella:

She is doing well. It will be a long process because the type of mange she has takes a long time to heal. She has demodex mange. Her sores are slowly healing, She is the sweetest thing. She doesn't know she looks awful. She is beautiful. She will stay with us until she is totally well. She will eventually get spayed and microchipped. Any help you can send for her would be greatly appreciated.. Thank you Anne Bell

I saw the sad picture of poor little Isabella. I'd like to donate money to help her and also be given updates on her progress.

Is she doing okay? Are her sores healing.

I will send in a check to your office to help with her care.

What is the address where donations can be sent.

The lady who e-mailed me is so kind.God bless their good work.

Thanks Sedona.

Years ago I cured a dog with demodectic mange that was in a shelter after many months. There are two kinds of mange. Demodectic and Sarcoptic. Poor Isablla has demodectic which is the worst. When I took care of the dog with mange the medicine of choice in those days was keflix. Don't know if they still use this. Stress plays a very important part in controlling mange as well as special baths. Hopefully Isabella will have a good outcome but it's important for her to go to a home without any stress, Preferably a one or two person home. Good luck isabella.

I hope this story and others like it get more exposure. People have to be made aware of the plight of these animals and why provisions have to be in place in times of disaster.

May God, who heals the sick, defends the vulnerable, cares for the poor, and liberates all creation from suffering and injustice, bring us all to that peaceable kingdom when all creatures shall live in harmony and all suffering shall be transformed into joy. Amen. (Franciscan Prayer- Belief.net)

Thank you for keeping this issue in the public eye. It has been a year, and the world doesn't stop - but it does forget, and go on with other issues. So many animals, over whom we are guardians, have suffered from this hurricane - unlike the people, they have no voice other than ours. Bless everyone who has given and cared.

Anne and her staff have been so generous to let me and boyfriend hang out at SAF for the last 4 days while we were in NOLA and I can tell you, Isabella is THE sweetest dog I've ever met... She is affectionate, happy, and Anne's right, she has NO idea how she looks. And frankly, after you spend 10 minutes with her, you forget it too! I really hope she finds a wonderful forever home. SAF is a miracle place for so many reasons. Denise, thank you for getting Isabella's story out to so many people, and thank you Kim for bringing Isabella to Denise's attention. We are leaving today and I will miss Isabella and all of the wonderful, sweet animals at SAF who are looking for forever homes.

For anyone reading this, the animal situation in NOLA continues to be heartbreaking. We've photographed countless animals roaming the streets, and these are not just ferals. They were once someone's cherished pet who is still waiting for their people to come get hem. You can see it in their eyes - they just cannot believe that no one has come yet and they wait, living in squalor, afraid for their lives (as they should be). Any support you can give to SAF for their continued work to spay and neuter these animals to keep the ever increasing numbers of kittens and puppies from adding to the unloved population of pets down here would be wonderful! But most importantly - please have a disaster plan for your own pets, no matter where you live, and pray that this tragedy never happens again in our lifetime...

I volunteered with Kim Johnson in NOLA and can attest to the plight of the animals left behind. I also rescued a dog with terrible demodectic mange. He had lost most of his hair and his skin was dry and scabby. We nicknamed him Dino, because he looked like a dinosaur. But Dino came back to Canada and after almost a year on Ivamec for his mange, he has been given a clean bill of health.
Cheers to all the rescuers still out there a year later. Your devotion does not go un-noticed, as seen by Isabella's story. There is hope for Isabella and many others. Don't give up.

ABC Network did a news story this morning on the "Katrina Pets" - they chose not to mention the plight of these abandoned animals, and in fact, the segment they aired presented the situation as solved. 50% of pets died and 50% were rescued. Their story focused on provisions now in place that permitted people to take their pets in an emergency, but I wish they would have shown little "Isabella's Photo" and the plight of the poor creatures not captured and suffering a fate worse than death.

I wonder why they didn't?

That is an excellent question Sedona, and one we need to get an answer too. A skilled journalist gets the ENTIRE story, be it good or bad, and reports it. This is especially important in a situation such as this where help can be provided or gained through their effective journalism. This is one thing I wrote to Denise Flaim about a while back and thanked her for doing. Yes, the sad stories are "just that," sad. But they are effective is getting problems resolved too.

I think we all need to contact ABC and some of the other news media and ask them to look at this story about Isabella, and don't just sweep the past under the rug - get up and do something about it NOW! We owe it to these animals, society let them down terribly before.

Way to go Sedona and Denise, let's get the media on this story now and get some help for these people resolving this issue.

As I said before, Denise "you rock." You are changing the plight of animals through your journalism. The sweet stories are heartwarming, but the sad stories will change our world hopefully.

I just did a Google search on ABC News, and I felt better to find they have reported some very real situations that need to be changed along the way relating to the Katrina animals.

I would like to contact them and ask for a special segment on this situation and on these people trying to help to build the public awareness and hopefully to solicit financial help for the situation as well for them.

I cannot find an e-mail or phone number to contact. Does anyone have one? I'll e-mail Denise Flaim too and hope she can send me one for all of us to contact them.

Let's save these poor animals and stop this overpopulation of sadness with spay/neuter just like we saved the first Duke and hopefully now the second Duke soon, and will save Vivi too.

Wonderful effort Kathleen. I'm printing out Isabella's Photo and it's going on my frig so I never forget these pitiful abandoned animals.

I was going to order Cable TV but instead I'm taking the money and donating it to help Isabella and other forgotten animals of Katrina's Tragic Legacy.

And when Isabella is well, I'm putting a new photo of her next to the old. We can make a difference.

Linda

I just read a thing in the local paper, here in California about a cat that was just returned to his mom, who had to give him up after Katrina. The cat was given up, sent to a rescue and fortunately, not adopted. The cat is with its owner now through a local shelter wayyyyy up in No. California. I have seen many news shows on the Katrina animals, those rescued and those still out there in the mess. Myself, I think the news people work with what they can and they don't know about all the poor animals, including poor Isabella..BTW, I started a candle site for her under, Isabl..Go light a candle for her!
Don't forget the plight of Duke, the Pitbull. I guess it will go to court after all, the neighbor man showed up yesterday, the final date for filing oppostition papers. Dukes owner is filing a rebuttal. www.SaveDuke.homestead.com/

IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN EVERYONE--SHE WILL GO HOME!

Psalm 118 (NIV) of David

21 I will give you thanks, for you answered me;
you have become my salvation.

22 The stone the builders rejected
has become the capstone;

23 the LORD has done this,
and it is marvelous in our eyes.

24 This is the day the LORD has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.

25 O LORD, save us;
O LORD, grant us success.

26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD.
From the house of the LORD we bless you. [a]

27 The LORD is God,
and he has made his light shine upon us.

28 You are my God, and I will give you thanks;
you are my God, and I will exalt you.

29 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
his love endures forever.

Father God, Creator of us all, You live in the praise of Your people. All good things come to us through You! This is the simple truth- Vivi and the lost ones will come home. The ill and desparate among us, both animals, and animal lovers will be healed. Justice on behalf of animals will be done, with You working through our voices, and our actions. We just have to cooperate. We praise You Father, and we lift in confidence these prayers and petitions to you...

I chickened out... I'm going to have them perform needle biopsies on all three of Tucker's lumps (I swear one just comes and goes) instead of having him put under anesthesia. If things are not perfect, then I will put him under and have the tumors removed. I HATE putting him "under". It's so scary... So, I have an appointment tomorrow at 10:00 AM CST to have the biopsies. The samples have to be sent to a lab so I won't have the results for 2 to 4 days. I promise I will let you know what I find out as soon as I find out.

Lois,

Tinkerbell and I will be praying hard for Tucker to have good results from these biopsies. I know exactly how you must be feeling right now. My scare with Tinkerbell was very upsetting. Hang in there lady and know we are all thinking of you and praying for the best.

Love Kathleen and Tinkerbell

I have requested an updated photo of our little Isabella. I will be in touch with the Southern Animal Foundation for updates on her progress and last night I taped her two photos to my frig. God bless her little thin body. She looks like a hound to me and I love hounds.

Linda (aka Sedona)

I sent my donation today. I hope there will be updates on Isabella. She is beautiful. Thank goodness for this foundation. They are angels for doing this necessary but sad work. The rewards probably don't come often enough. I will be donating more in the future.

The plight of little Isabella has touched my heart deeply. I wish I could adopt her when she is well, but my home is already "dog" enriched. Besides, she needs some good one-on-one time and gentleness. But she looks like a real bloomer to me. I am committed to send support too.

God bless all those kind and loving people who help eliminate the pain of suffering of our pets and feral animals so in need of our help. May we never forget them - never!

PLEASE ACCEPT MY APOLOGIES FOR THE CAPS BUT THIS IS IMPORTANT STUFF. WE NEED TO DRUM UP SOME MORE MONEY FOR HARRY OAKES' TRIP TO NYC. TERRI CALLED ME THIS AFTERNOON AND SHE HAS ASKED ME TO HANDLE THE COLLECTION OF THE FUNDS. SO, IN CASE ANYONE HAS FORGOTTEN, MY POST OFFICE BOX IS:

Lois Baker
PO Box 211604
Eagan, MN 55121

IF I AM NOT MISTAKEN, BRIAN HAS GENEROUSLY DONATED LIVING QUARTERS FOR HARRY AND HIS DOG...WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO COME UP WITH MONEY FOR THE FIRST CLASS PLANE TICKET FOR HARRY AND OBVIOUSLY HIS FEES. IT'S A BIG CHUNK OF CHANGE BUT WE'VE DONE IT BEFORE AND I AM CONFIDENT WE CAN DO IT AGAIN - BECAUSE WE ROCK.

I will use the numerical "tag" system that Terri had mentioned when posting amounts received on the blog. Even if it is $5 it would be greatly appreciated...if you can send more, that would be great too. EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS! I know that we've all put a lot of effort and finances into the finding of OUR VIVI. We've done it before and we can do it again.

If anyone knows of anyone that can purchase a first class ticket with their frequent flyer miles (that would be willing to do so), perhaps an email could be sent to Terri with the offer. I have no idea how many FFMs or how much $$$ it costs so I'm no help here. Let's get this done my friends!

A SIDE NOTE...Tucker survived his needle biopsies and I should have the results next week some time. I'm going to "assume" they are negative until I am told otherwise. He's on HIS chair right now with his little stuffed hedgehog - adorable.

Lois, First of all thank you for taking this on again! You are a kind hearted person, and second, so Good to hear Tucker did well today. Rosa

Lois: Thank you for taking this task on. I put a check just now in the mail. And I am prepared to add to it if need be.

Yeah, for finding Vivi!!!!!!

Additional photos of Isabella (Izzy) can be seen here:

.

Ah,...Izzy's going to be a pretty girl when she heals.

Thanks for the link. I can't wait to see the "after" or in progress shots.

In this poor puppies short life she has known nothing but pain. How sad!

Psalm 63;6-8Because your loving kindness is better than life, my lips shall praise you. Thus will I bless you while I live; I will lift up my hands in your name. Ny soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness and my mouth shall praise you with joyful lips; when I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the night watches. Because you have been my help, therefore in the shadow of your wings will I rejoice. My soul follows hard after you; your right hand upholds me.

Daddy God we gather together this morning to thank you for your faithfulness to us. You have cared and tended to all of Vivi's needs when no human could be there to provide for her. Your mighty hand has guided her to safety, to food, to water, and you have kept her from all evil and harm. We are so grateful to you Daddy. When we cannot see her, you are watching. When we cannot hold her, your are sheltering her with your arms. When we cannot guide her, your angels are surrounding her. When we cannot speak to her, your Holy Spirit talks with her within her heart. Daddy God continue your blessed grace and care over our little Vivi. Thank you Daddy for Harry and Valerie. They will be here soon, but if you choose to bring Vivi to the "meeting place" before they even arrive we will dance and sing in your presence. You are the all knowing Lord God of the heavens and the earth. Bring Vivi to the rescuer you have chosen today Daddy God. And if you choose for Harry and Valerie to do the work of your hands help us to bring in all the funds that are needed. You are Jehovah Jireh, The God Who Provides. Keep all of these that we have brought to your throne and bring them into rescue and human companionship with their families. Vivi, Biggie, Sniffles, Rags, Faithful, Little Aussie, Mommy, Daddy and Baby Girl pup, Apple Riley, Holly, Precious Hosanna, Buddy, Annie, African Grey, Patterson, Pointer, Jack Russel, Grey Tabby and Bowdee. Keep each and every one in your tender care and speak to each one and lead them home Daddy God. Holy Jesus, continue your merciful and powerful healing in our little ones, CJ, Dante, Felice, Max, McGee, Murphy, Mylie, Barbaro, Gunner, Linus, Kiva, Ellie, Morgan, Andi, Nicki, Dude, Tucker, Tinkerbell, Lost in the Fog, Bowen, the twin kittens and Pie Bird. Bring them into vibrant health with your resurection, life giving power. Continue your blessed healing in our brothers and sisters, Madison, Baby Girl, JL. Lance, Pam, Chris, Abby, Pat, Jacque, Ruth, Mary Ann, Darlene, Kim, Millicent, and Kathleen. Thank you Daddy for the wonderful news about Mary Ann. How we laugh and rejoice in your presence. Bring them all into your glory of resurection power and send them forth to give their testimonies of your greatness and unending love. We all want to glorify you Holy Jesus with our lives. Help our faith to soar as we turn to you each and every day. Protect and lead your mighty army of rescuers. Bless them Daddy God beyond their dreams and bring them into total victory in the task you have sent them out to do. They are working very hard as we pray and they give their all for you Daddy. Cuddle them in your arms and help them to feel your great love for them. Bless Terri for all her hard work. Continue to lead her Daddy God and hold her in your loving arms as she takes the steps you have led her to take. Protect beloved Israel and America as they battle terrorism to keep us free. Shelter the soldiers under your wings and watchful eye and strengthem them and bring them into the victory of peace. Protect the innocent and lead them to safety and provision. Bless our letters and petitions for Duke and Otis. Send little Duke home to his mommy. Give him a kind and loving Judge who will release him. Fill us with your glory. We honor and trust in you with all our hearts as we cling to your mighty hand as we walk through this day. Fill the earth with your glory Daddy God for all to see. Let this be the day Daddy God...Let this be the day INDEED...In Jesus's Name we pray...Amen

Lord, help me to be honest and humble enough to acknowledge my need of you in all things. Author unknown

Isabella, the little survivor dog, was found in St. Bernard Parish a block off the Chalmette Vista Canal.
One afternoon she slowly walked out to the tree cutting crew Stacey C. and I were monitoring.
Everyone present searched for food to give her.
One tree cutter fashioned a water bowl out of a plastic sandwich container.
This crew was not my usual assignment and the area not my normal work area, but I set about feeding her twice a day until I could fine a place to get her the help she needed and I couldn't give. It took 2 days to find out where she was denning.
She was living in a garage beat up by the storm and sleeping on a bed of pink fiberglass that had fallen from the ceiling.
Have you ever worked with fiberglass?
A few days later, on my day off, I located the Southern Animal Foundation number and during a call there was told she would probably be eligible to be treated under a special grant. Two days later I took a couple of hours off from my job at FEMA and scooped her up and brought her to the Magazine Street location in New Orleans.
As soon a she exited the carry cage everyone present went "ahhh, oooh!" and hearts went out to her. And she seemed to want to show her affection to all present.

As the pictures show and the folks who have dealt with her note, her looks at you leave no choice but to try to make life better for her.
At the S.A.F. she immediately found the love and attention she so badly needed and deserved.

To answer your question, my wife and I have too many 'set in their ways' cats to bring her home, but the idea did cross my mind several times. How could one not want her in their life.

p.s. She was almost named Noddles.

And many thanks to whomever made that grant possible.
