Two queries in search of an answer

These two questions arrived via email today:

<<I heard Vivi was found and recently entered in a dog show in Portland, OR. Untrue? What is the current status?>>

Search coordinator Bonnie Folz responds: "Did she win?"

Unfortunately, Vivi has not repatriated back to the Other Coast.  We still believe her to be hanging around northern Queens, eluding searchers, hopscotching around city parks, and generally being the picture postcard of whippet ingenuity and independence.

There was another reported sighting this morning in Oakland Gardens, in the vicinity of Alley Pond Park.

<<You have been so kind to have the on going blog about Vivi. Several "bloggers" have been wondering if you will be shutting it down. It is for course you choice to do so. After all it is your space. If you are planning to terminate the use for the Vivi bloggers, please let us know so maybe we can relocate. It would be terrible to check in and find it gone and not know where to go for information. >>

I started this blog in the weeks preceding Westminster to discuss animal topics in general, and to complement my weekly  Animal House column in Newsday. I thought the timing was perfect -- and it was! When Vivi made her great escape, it seemed natural to use this blog as an information source and contact point for searchers, sighthound people and basically anyone who was touched by Vivi's story.

As the weeks -- and months -- wore on, Vivi's owners and the main searchers realized what the experts had been saying all among was true: that intense, targeted attempts to catch her were more likely to drive her away. As the media attention dwindled, as it inevitably does, the focus turned to raising and maintaining awareness about Vivi's presence in the Queens communities where she has been seen.

And so while the dedication to the Vivi search remains unabated, the tone and pace of the search have changed. Breeder Bo Bengtson's emails have gone from lengthy daily missives to weekly reports. And so, too, the frequency of updates to this blog has slowed. That's just natural, because there's just only so much to say.

On a personal note, my posts of late have been pre-empted by a happy occasion: the arrival of 10 magically delicious Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies, who turn 4 weeks old today.

Thanks to Vivi, this blog has grown and grown, and now there's a bustling little community here. Sure, it has its share of dysfunction, but what gathering of animal people (or people in general) doesn't?

While we wait for Vivi to allow herself to get caught, there are plenty of other things to discuss and debate. As with the boarding-kennel vaccination post I made earlier in the day, there are always opportunities to make a difference.

So, all this is to say that, no, I have no intention of shutting this blog down. And, yes, I plan to start posting more often, in between scooping piles of ever-growing Ridgeback poop. Whenever there is Vivi news -- or maybe even when there isn't -- I'll update you about the  little white and brindle runaway. And as other subjects come up, I'll post them too, if only to give us something to do until the day she shows up.

Thank you so much Denise for the update and post.
And many many kisses to the baby ridgebacks (and mom and dad of course!)Happy healthy long lives to them.
Lydia

Congratulations on your beautiful puppies. As the Mom of two Labrador Retrievers, the big ones have the goofiest grins. Thank you for all the postings on Vivi. I check this site regularly, hoping and praying I'll read Vivi has been found and recovered. I can't imagine losing Tyler or Tucker, so my heart aches for Bo, Jil and other family members. Animal House is in my "Favorites" where it will stay permanently. Thank you again for all the great stuff!

Denise, best wishes to you and your new furry family members.
Thank you for facilitating this blog and providing an outlet for the Vivi lovers of the world!!!

Denise, thanks for the blog! Congratulations on being a dog grandma! Terrie

You are awesome Denise! Thank you...for E V E R Y T H I N G !

Denise -

Thank you for providing this blog. I have seen so much good growing out of this blog. Just the rescue of the border collie someone posted about a week ago alone made it worth so much. To think that someone posted this animal's fate, people e-mailed the rescue groups and by morning we had this baby help.

I have met and grown to love all of these bloggers. It is wonderful to see people who have the same passion and love for animals that I do. I have never physically met these people, but consider them very dear friends who I hope someday to meet.

Thank you from all the bloggers and all the animals that need help. You provided a great service to all of us.

Hugs from Kathleen and Tinkerbell

Congrats on the new pups, but we want to see some pictures on this blog of your new family, mom and dad also.

Denise,
In my family 10 ridgebacks would be known as "baby rich". While you're watching where you step--- have fun, ENJOY! Thanks for everything!

All powerful Creator of the universe, We thank and praise you for the good that is being done because people are coming together for Vivi. We marvel at the reawakening of the world in the Spring. We marvel at the birth of Ridgeback puppies! How can we not place our trust in a God so wonderful! Allow the light of your stars, and moon to light the travels of Vivi, Biggie, and Sniffles, and put them on the road to home. Let them sleep peacefully, and protected, in the warmth of Your loving gaze. Gather all the lost and help them find loving "forever" homes. Thank you for the healing that is already taking place in Dante, and Murphy!
We praise you for the selfless and loving things that the readers of this blog are doing for animals, IN YOUR NAME! Bless the NYC "posters" and searches who seem to gather their vitality from Your never sleeping energy. Send Your angels to help and protect Vivi's angels! Bring into Your kingdom, with shouts of joy and welcome, all who will join you in Paradise tonight. Let us sleep in the confidence of Your love, content to know YOU ARE IN CHARGE! Amen

Thanks, Denise. Because of this blog, I met two very special people the weekend we all traveled to Queens to search for Vivi: Maggie from FL and Nicole from NC. I am grateful.
Laurie from CA.

I am so happy you are keeping this blog going! I check frequently for upodates on Viiv, hoping that she will soon realize she needs her family!
Also congrats on your new puppies! My dream is to be in a roomful of puppies and just play with them-especially a roomful of ridgebacks! Since I just have two neutered males, I will have to live my dream through your puppy tales!

Ridgeback puppies, how fun, can we see pictures? oh and congratulations. Since I found this blog of animal lovers, I am a faithful reader. Thank you for the forum. Vivi please find a nice volunteer!!!!

From Gail's website on POSTERS and ADS:

"The ads and posters need to tell people how to get ViVi. People are misreading the Signs as
DO NOT CATCH HER - CALL

They need to state
SHE IS FRIGHTENED - SIT DOWN,
GET HER TO COME TO YOU
DO NOT WALK TOWARDS HER SHE WILL RUN (35 MPH)
CHASING HER MAKES HER MORE AFRAID

I have spoken to many people and they think we do not want them to try to get her. Just to Call.

Word it anyway you can. Just get the point across Stop using DO NOT CHASE.

WE want someone to pick her up if they can. So far no one has tried because of the signs.Except for some kids and one man who did not know what to do so they tried to catch her by chasing after her.

Most of the people who have seen her did not chase her. They just saw her running. They did not have a chance to chase her."

Denise: Please be a good grandma and post pictures of those babies !

I'll work on more flyers with the new wording Sunday. I'll try to get them in the mail on Monday! Keep on truckin'!

Denise: first, thank you so very much for this "blog." I, too, have "met" so many incredible, wonderful committed, loving people and I thank you so very much for keeping this blog going! And, keeping the info and faith for Vivi going! I am so optimistic for this weekend!!! AND, congrats on your new babies and as a fellow Ridgeback parent (I use that term loosely, I am owned by my Ridgebacks) anytime you feel like e-mailing me pictures of your new babies I would be so honored!!! Thank you, Denise! You have done, and do, so much good it is unbelievable! Always with faith, Marnie in CA

thank you Denise. Congrats on your puppies .
I have been on this blog since the beginning , and have had the pleasure to have met many wonderful people. Our main goal here is to get Vivi back to her family. We are all vigilant. In ever aspect of the search for vivi.

Hey Linda

How are you feeling today, are you a little tired heard you got in late, what a trooper you are, also got in a little late, we should be back out again tomorrow in the day, cant get enouggh of the parks for some reason hehe, mail me we need to chat.

Everybody, please do not change the wording on the posters. The language has been thought out carefully and we do not want just anybody trying to catch/capture/grab her for fear that she will travel to a new location. Right now she seems to be staying within one area and our volunteers have been instructed on what to do if they should see her.

Thanks all for your wonderful support.

Psalm 134
Behold, Bless the Lord, all you servants of the
Lord, who by night stand in the House of
the Lord| Lift up your hearts, and hands
in the sanctuary and Bless The Lord!
The Lord who made Heaven and Earth, Bless
you from Zion!

Creator of the Night and Day, and all living things which inhabit the Earth--We will bless Your name. You who created the stars to brighten a dark world, protect and keep Vivi, Biggie, and Sniffles in the safety and warmth of Your light so that they may sleep peacefully and well. Gather them Good
Shepherd into Your arms, and give them to the searchers in New York. Let us rejoice in their return to their earthly home. Thank you for the healing taking place in Madison, Dante, and Murphy.
Console all those who grieve tonight, assure Diane that you will give her whippet child a special place at Your feet until Heaven becomes like Home.
Welcome all who will join you in Paradise tonight!
Rescue all the lost, and do not "lose" us so that one day we will come Home to you. Bless and protect those who persevere in the Vivi rescue-- many of them despite physical limitations, and just plain fatigue. Send your angels to help in their cause!Author of all that lives bring this story to its happy ending. Send us peaceful refreshing sleep knowing YOU ARE IN CHARGE. Amen.
Much empathy in the loss of your baby, Diane. I was there a year ago, hoping it could end another way, but knowing I did the right thing! Prayers.

Denise, congratulations on the Ridgeback puppies! What a delight to be surrounded by 10 puppies! I also want to thank you for this blog. I check it everyday hoping to hear that Vivi is safe.

Diane,

What about only adding... "She is frightened" DO NOT CHASE. Some how saying she is frightened makes it more clear to people why she should not be chased and make them understand they are dealing a frightened dog who will run from them.
The word frightened also builds empathy with people i think,

I thought I had posted about this puppy a few days ago, but can't find it on the blogs. I apologize if this is a duplicate. Last week I found a color computer printout picture of a (now) 5 month old Italian greyhound female puppy, light pearl-tan with white blaze between the eyes. Inscription was "save this puppy.....owner will negotiate price"
The person, a Rebecca, had a note posted to Dr. Arnie Lesser on the back asking his help (which is why the picture was in our hospital) I called this person and it seems that she has a 12 year old disabled daughter who can't comprehend how to handle an IGGY puppy (or any puppy) "She squeezes the head and chest and pulls the legs" HEY HOW ABOUT RESEARCHING BEFORE YOU GO OUT AND GET A DOG ??
The woman says the puppy is pretty much crated most of the time, is pad trained, affectionate and playful, etc etc etc. She had to tell me that she "paid $1000 for Bellanina so I want something for her". Now I didn;t get to ask her where the puppy is from , etc - afraid of the answer I guess, but I', planning on calling her back tonight and getting info, she left me another recent message asking if I knew anyone who wanted "to buy the puppy" which really pisses me off. What really scares me is - she's so concerned about $ - so when the puppy gets a fracture from the kid, she's not going to want to put anything into orthopedic surgery. And rather than give the puppy over she's have it put down for $50 or dump her in the shelter.
(I started working recently with a rescued MiniPin who was dumped in Brooklyn shelter to be killed because of a lame hind leg that needed surgery. A wonderful person got him out of there and had the hip repaired, but he was almost a goner. He also had face injuries which have been taken care of earlier, the pound put him in a cage with larger dogs on the Kill list , and they attacked him)
I really shouldn't have a fourth dog, my Iggy mix female would make life hell for this one anyway.
I met someone at the Fundraiser who showed me her Iggy pictures in her wallet but I forgot her name, does anyone know who I'm talking about ? All I remember is she was a very thin woman with black hair, Marie or something with an "M", and she was by the chairs and table where they were selling the T-Shirts and raffles. I have a copy of the puppy's picture if anyone wants it faxed. I could make a donation to a good rescue group (or towards someone buying her for a loving forever home ) if this woman would give her up. I'm gonna ask her, what will you do if the puppy gets injured?
I don't think someone is going to BUY this little girl, especially as she's getting older. They live in Kew Gardens or Rego Park, I don't dare go "look" at her

Nancy, Pathetic story. I've heard things like this before..Poor little I.G., they are so very delicate. I've always wanted one, but with two Whippets, I couldn't have another. I hope you find the gal your looking for..Poor little Iggy, stupid woman! If I were here, so what if she paid $1,000 for the dog, get it out of that house and her daughters abuse!
MaryL-California

Please do not change the wording. We have over 8,00 flyers with the approved wording not to mention the ones that are already posted and just received a shipment of 8-1/2 x 11 laminated posters with the approved wording.

Nancy I've sent you an email regarding the IG.

Denise, Congrats on the new puppies. What a happy lively home it must be. I can't wait to see pictures I also wanted to thank you for having this blog. I have met some of the most compassionate people and they love animals as much as I do. Vivi will be found. It'll just take a little longer. In the meantime I think we as a group have accomplished some good things. ie; Saving dogs' lives and helping LA pass the No Pet Left Behind bill.

Today was Good Shepherd Sunday, and it is a wonderful image to hold in mind while we are waiting and praying for these babies. Whether looking at Psalm 23 or the Gospel of the Good Shepherd, both are a wonderful reminder of the reckless love of God for creation. (Shepherds, good ones that is, would literally lay across a break in the rocks and let their flocks pass over them to safety.) We have to believe that God holds that same love for our "lost ones"... and for us.
In a modern musical setting Bob Duford S.J. wrote:
"Like a Shepherd, He feeds his flock, and gathers the lambs in his arms---Holding them carefully close to His Heart, LEADING THEM HOME."

Ever vigilant Shepherd of us all, hear our prayers for Vivi, Biggie, Sniffles, and all the lost and abandoned ones. Hold them near Your heart and bring Vivi, Biggie, and Sniffles to the families who love them. Bring all the lost and abandoned ones to families of their own so that they may know love and home. Accept our praise for the healing you are doing in Madison, Dante, and Murphy. Put one of your angels in charge of racing with Thunder until Heaven is home. Welcome all the weary whose journey leads them to Paradise tonight. Watch over us and protect us so that we do not become lost in the unimportant things of the world. Remind us of your call to us as caretakers of animals and your creation. Bless the efforts of Vivi's angels as they post and search-- often fighting troubles of their own, to do Your will in this matter.Give them Your angels to keep them strong and safe. Strengthen our faith in You as a result of this experience, regardless of our faith expression. May all of us human and animal alike sleep well tonight knowing---YOU ARE IN CHARGE! Amen.

If anyone is interested in seeing the most recent ad I took out, you can go to www.onlongislandtoday.com and click on classified ads and then click on pets. I know this is in a Long Island paper but, hope that someone may work or know of someone who lives in the area Vivi has been sighted. I think it is a very well done ad.

Meri-Lou...good work..ad looks nice..even if the area isn't close if it's free put it in someone may see it and know someone who does live in the area ..anything to keep the word out.

I just spoke to a very nice gentleman at Newsday (Richard) about the problem with the ad not appearing for the first 3 days. He asked me if I had heard about the missing whippet in New York and I explained to him that the ad was for her. He then said, Oh yes, I recognize her name (VIVI) because that's his best friends name. He apologized for the error and said that they would run the ad for another 7 days at no charge. The ad is to run in all of their newspapers from 5/10/06 - 5/16/06. Those is New York, please verify this for me.

Good job Meri-Lou

Yes, the paper it should run in is the New York City edition of Newsday.

MERI-LOU Please check your email.

Thanks so much for keeping us updated Darlene with as much as you're able to.
I just want to echo the sentiments of everyone else when I say how awesome all of you Vivi searchers are...
and how grateful I am for all you're doing and for never giving up. I just know with that kind of spirit and love there will be a happy ending!
All this talk of Liverwurst has made me remember that as a kid growing up my Mother's favorite sandwich used to be Liverwurst. In honor of the searchers, maybe I'll make my mother a liverwurst sandwich for Mother's Day... how could a mother get so lucky!

Susan, Chocolate and wine would compliment that liverwurst sandwich very nicely!! Rosa, LOL

Does anyone know if Bo haven't purchased a larger trap. I have heard that none of the traps are working. I know we all think ViVi wouldn't go in a trap but WHAT IF she takes that chance. We need at least one working trap set up somewhere.

Wonderful suggestion Rosa! LOL

I think just becasue she hasn't gone in a trap yet dosen't mean she never will.
I remember Bo saying in one of his posts, that almost all the lost greyhounds that where out there for so long, were eventually captured by a trap.

I agree Susan. We need to find out about this. It may be that one time that ViVi is walking by the trap and decides to go in.

I meant has and not haven't in my post

I wonder if Bo knows we don't have ONE SINGLE working trap. How can we possibly catch her ina trap if NONE work. I just found this out recently. This most certainly needs to be fixed. Yes it could catch another stray - in which case good, we have gotten another lost soul off the streets. We talked and talked about traps and Bo got lots of emails about sources. Surely this is an exapmple of something that the fund can be used for. Our searchers need this kind of support. Any ideas about how this can be changed? How can we rule out that traps don't work if we don't have ONE?

Having a working trap seems like an extremely urgent problem we can get together and get funding for.

Yea, it does kind of seem like a no-brainer! Terrie

Did anyone ever find a trap online somewhere. I went to googles and found some but I just don't know what size we would need. I know we need a big one. The fund should pay for this but we have to go through Honi and you know what that means. If it's not her ideal then it doesn't get approved. Hopeful Honi will figure it out that their is more to catching ViVi than just handing out flyers every Saturday.

Would it be possible to get one of these companys who makes the trap to donate it, for Vivi's cause it could bring them some recognition, just a suggestion. HOni seems like a dead end, so why waste time there.. Rosa

Hello Rosa

Glad your back. I think your idea is a great one and yes you are right Honi is a dead end. That is why we have to take matters in our own hand and take charge.

Honi if your listening, you might want to jot down some of these suggestions! Or are you in a wine and chocolate COMA?

That's a good idea and worth a try. However, the money is there. If it isn't to be spent to have one ONE working trap what would it be for?

Hi Marty, Thank you Maybe if someone calls one of these trap company's and explains the urgency of the matter they might just temporary lend it to someone like Gale.

This is worse then watergate! We raise money only to let someone like Honi control it, and do nothing constructive with it! I just can't figure this out?

Let's everyone try and find a big trap so we can place it somewhere in one of ViVi paths and try to catch her. Like I said before maybe just maybe she may go in the trap.

I would think her wandering into a trap is more likely than her approaching anyone, what would it hurt at this point. There is nothing to loose with trying.

sorry I meant lose.

We need to find a company that is there in NY so someone could go pick it up. Anyone have any ideas here on the blog that lives in the area

I'd like to see the fund buy the trap -or get it donated- and then donate it to some group after. It is annoying that we already did this very research and nothing was done. Why? Oh right, because maybe it won't work, maybe the bait will be too smelly, maybe we will also catch a stray. maybe maybe but but if if. Here we are as a result. Nowhere.

I agree Rosa. We can't sit around and wait for Honi's approval.

Right on Karen!!

Okay let's approach it this way. Let's all get together and find a trap and then ask Honi to get funds from the account to pay for it and see what she says. If finding ViVi is really in her heart then she will release funds for the trap and if she doesn't then we know where her heart is. Let's just see who's side Honi is on the political side or the ViVi side

I will try to either look up my previous large trap research or do it again tomorrow and post what I find.
If anyone else out there who sent Bo or Denise an email about very large traps- not crates- could post what you found here it would be helpful.

Great Karen. I will start looking also. Everyone please lets find a trap.

I know at least one of the traps used to work because they've used them before... can we also find someone who knows how to fix them?????

Bo said himself in one of his posts that probably the only way she can be caught is in a trap since that is how most of all the lost greyhounds have been caught.

Here is a link for traps... there is a LG size for German Shepard and Xtra LG for St Bernard.
I have no idea the size of the traps they have been using.

http://www.animal-traps.com/

Your exactly right Susan. I remember seeing awhile ago when they were trying to find traps but no one had any. We need a bigger one so ViVi won't think it is a trap.I wish we could find a camouflage trap so it would blend in with the surroundings and ViVi wouldn't think she is going in a trap.

That's great Susan. We will see who can find the largest trap and then go to Honi. I found traps that size also. I wish we could find larger ones

Susan, Could you get the prices of the traps and post it on her please

As far as the traps go... I guess there is a barrel trap that is supposed to be GREAT! Much more inviting for animals to go into. I don't know where I heard about it or who said it but it was brought up specifically relating to Vivi and her capture. These traps look like those great big barrel drums. I think they might use them for bears? Any way, thought I'd throw that in there in case people are looking into it... Could it have been Lt. Borgal that mentioned it? My brain is Vivi-fried... I can hardly remember my own name.

I've looked into those other crates...remember when we were talking about getting one for Bobbi & The Strays? Even though they list them as large size crates, they seem long but very narrow and with low ceilings? I'll go online and see if I can't find anything out about the barrel-drum-traps...

Lois,

I found a camouflage barrel drum trap. Can you look at this trap and see what you think. Go to googles and type x-lg dog traps. click on live animal traps at cooperseeds.com, then click on coyote traps and look at trap # T042

Lois, do you know what the size was of the trap they had been using? Even if we get another one that size or a little bigger it's better than not having any traps at all. I still think just because she hasn't gone in the trap before doesn't mean she never will. Anytime she is staying in a particular area for a few days where it is practical to place a trap I think they should do it.
I believe that's what they where doing before the trap stopped working.
After there is one trap out there working we could look into some different sorts of traps that will take a little more time to find.
I was wondering about different type traps and the ability of Tina and Rosa to haul those around?

Thank you Susan and Lois. We need to find out about these barrel traps Lois is talking about.

The barrel trap I found is a 55 gallon trap. Would that be big enough.

I am not trying to be negative at all but it's like the common sense approach is being avoided 100%. And it's not any of you , All of you are great! I can't understand why the person or persons in charge of this Vivi fund have not figured huh we should get a trap or two since all these people donated $ for that ? And as all this time goes by it's like WHY? whats the waiting for ? I just feel so sad that things are being dismissed... don't quite get it but I just wonder if the stinky bait would work and a trap may also do the trick . All options should be considered at this time and nothing should be dismissed... Please Honi if you are reading this and really have Jil's best interest at heart why do these things not make sense to you ? Can you please just give permission to use the bait ? Or actually never mind people should really just take things into their own hands at this point. Honi, Honi WHO? oh yes ,the one that is being stingy with the money, that Honi . Just screw Vivi because Honi won't do this or that , time to do what you want, they ain't going to bitch if you get her are they ? No way! You are all thinking of what you can do to help call here and there it's nice to do but shouldn't the person in charge have already had all these things done ? not complaining keep it up because you are going to be the ones to bring VIVI home, not her!

Susan, I believe someone said the traps they have are just average size traps. That is why Bo mentioned getting a bigger one so maybe ViVi might go in the bigger one.
