Rays of hope

From Bo Bengtson, Vivi's breeder:

<<UPDATE AS OF FRIDAY NIGHT, APRIL 14, 2006

The good news is that Vivi is sighted regularly by different people now, several of whom have gotten a good look at her. She is obviously in good condition – one person who saw her said she looked “well groomed” which is difficult to believe but still encouraging. Although still skittish she seems to be less afraid of people. A man fishing in a pond says she was sniffing around his car, then came up when he fed her a sandnwich and even let herself be petted. A few other dogs then arrived and scared her away. A few people are now putting out food for her, in the hope that she will keep returning to the same spot.

Unless someone is lucky enough to close a gate behind her, the best chance to catch Vivi are traps. Records prove that most of the hundreds of greyhounds rescued over the years have been caught in traps. The problem is that Vivi is obviously concerned about going into a trap (probably after being traumatized when her crate was bumped open at JFK), and she also finds enough to eat elsewhere that she’s not desperate for food. We are investigating different types of over-size traps and other kinds of traps that may be more appealing to her.

Surprisingly, even the biggest dog traps we’ve found on the market are only 26” tall. (How does one catch a Great Dane in those?) If anyone has further information, please contact me via this website.

Several people have pointed out that it’s impressive that a supposedly spoiled show dog is so eminently capable of coping on her own. This is perhaps something to be proud of in some respects, but I would much rather have her be a little more in need of help.

I will not send daily updates in the future but limit them to twice a week: Monday and Thursday nights ... They may be brief, but I will of course make sure that any important news is posted immediately, regardless of what day it is.

Thanks for your patience.

Bo, What wonderful news. Especially about Vivi eating the sandwich and allowing the man to pet her!
Thank you so much for the update. Hopefully, an Easter miracle is on the horizon. I'm praying very hard for one.

Thank you Bo for the update... that is surprising she looked well groomed... it seems a good sign if she has clamed down enough to let herself be petted.

Bo, thanks for sharing this update. It's heartening to learn that Vivi is slowly allowing some contact with humans she sees as approachable. It's especially good news to hear that she allowed herself to be petted. I, too, am hoping for an Easter miracle -- or an after-Easter miracle on Vivi's own time clock. Thank you for sharing what you can when you can.

Great news to hear at the end of the day. Happy Passover and Easter to all of you. To the fantastic searchers, a very happy holiday and thank you from all of us.

Bo, there's a website (www.petsafe-warehouse.com) that offers extra-large crates around 46" and 48" tall. They're certainly not as tall as the one that MaryL found, but they appear to be wider.

For Bo -- Please disregard the petsafe-warehouse.com suggestion. I didn't read the dimensions correctly; the length is 46-46", the height is only 31".

However, there is an option at www.mightypets.com, which advertises "Midwest Championship Dog Crates-Extra Large Size Dogs Model 610 48" Long x 30" Wide x 35" High."

Thank you, Bo, for this wonderful update. I'm praying that Vivi will be on her way home during this Easter week. The fact that she is allowing someone to pet her certainly seems encouraging. Thank you for sharing this with everyone. . .and thank you to everyone who is helping Vivi get home. I'll be praying in church tomorrow for happy news about Vivi soon. . .have a blessed Easter.

I will still check these updates everyday as I have done since I found this site. Seems like ViVi is getting closer to being found. I hope and pray she will be with you very soon.

I'm sorry, Bo and everyone. I was looking at crates, not traps. Got caught up in the effort to try and help, and am not being helpful, after all. Will go back to thinking positive thoughts and not taking up everyone's time with good intentions, but useless suggestions.

Maybe if Rick sat in the middle of those traps with a nice sandwich...
Now I really am getting tired. Can't believe I've stayed awake this long. Just about time to blow out the candle, and call it a day. (Can't count on the large votives at church-- they always take them away from Good Friday until Easter Monday.)

Father God, the power behind all miracles, and the origin of Hope, Today we commemorated the day when Jesus gave His life for ours, and destroyed death for all time. We know without question Your love for us. We know without question Your care for all you have created. If it is Your time and will bring Vivi back to her parents. Put Biggie, and Sniffles, on the path to the people who love them. Heal Lisa P., Dante, and Murphy, and all people and animals who face chronic, or terminal illnesses. In the meantime loving Father hold these people and animals in your loving embrace, and keep them safe.
Send restorative sleep to us all, and special blessings to the NYC Angel squad (nice name Renee), who are acting in your earthly stead. We praise You, and love You all powerful Creator,...and we know YOU ARE IN CHARGE. Amen.

Just Paul and Sharon,
If you have moved to this new blog, go back to the old one for a second to read my last post. Happy Easter!!

Response to Sharon's prayer...AMEN
Good night every one. Vivi will be rescued very soon. Every one get a good night's rest. I'm ready for wonderful news tomorrow. I mean today. It's after midnight

I am so glad to hear this news!!!! Vivi's other name is Bohem C'est La Vie , this is French . I was not able to get a definition on the word "Bohem" but C'est la Vie means : it is the life... I went to word translations on the web and 2 searches had the same meaning. I'm thrilled to hear about Jil and Rick coming back . After reading Bo's post from the other day it seems like he has looked into pretty much everything and I think they are coming with a good plan and I hope they leave with Vivi this time around. It's good news tonight ! I think Vivi wanted the comfort of a person, even better is she's letting someone pet her , that is music to my ears and It's very comforting to know . I bet the next time that guy goes fishing he'll bring a sandwich and hopefully a leash , maybe that would work especially because he has food and is probably a nice man , dogs know that stuff. Well Happy Easter to everyone !!! Glad to hear about the "Ray of Hope" Good night.

Fabulous and wonderful to hear about her going up to a little boy and then taking the sandwich from a fisherman (?)!! She is so ready for Rick to wrap his arms around her and bring that baby home! Let this be the Easter weekend!! Come home VIVI! We are all with you! You have no idea!! These sightings and Rick being there are all coming together to bring you home and are so wonderful! ... Vivi come home! Major love in your direction, Marnie in CA

I wonder if we can build a BIG trap? I live in NH, about 4 hrs. from NYC. My son has a shop here and is very clever. We are here to help, if we can!

Sure hope this is the week...she sure seems to be coming around more to people. Happy easter and Passover to everyone. Praying all the time....come home VIVI!

I feel good about her becoming more forward towards strangers. It sure lifts our "Vivi" spirits. I am praying we have a miracle this month. Wishing everyone Easter and Passover blessings.

Thank you so much for keeping us posted. I check on Vivi at least 2 X a week and am glad to hear of the progress that has been made with her. As a greyhound owner I can sympathize with the difficulty you are having in catching her. My prayers will be with you!

Chrissy,
I have taught French for quite awhile as part of my teaching responsibility. C'est La Vie means "That's Life". I had not thought much about her fancy title before. Bohem (I'm sure it's a play on Bo's name), is taken from the Opera "La Boheme" and means Bohemian girl. A Bohemian is usually a carefree wanderer or Gypsy, a free spirit. That's the problem Bo-- this kid took her name too literally!! Let the nice people bring you home today, little wandering gypsy, Vivi!

I was just checking e-mail, and I was sent the following links. You may want to check them out for a good chuckle. (They concern cats, but I'm sure you won't hold that against me-- and trust me they can apply for dogs, too.)
The first is "Strict Rules for Dealing with Strays.

http://www.showcatsonline.com/x/stray_cat_rules.htm

The second is about the conformation standards for JUDGES in the show ring.
http://www.showcatsonline.com/x/judge_and_be_judged.htm

(I have balanced Karma. My kitty McGee is a Persian who was given to me several months after the death of my first cat. The wonderful breeder sad she felt so badly after Gus died, she knew McGee had work to do. Other family members had gotten cats from her before, so the only price was the cost of the neuter. McGee could be a show cat, -- there is a neuter category, but we both prefer the quiet life at home. Minou strayed into my life a year later after being rescued in the nick of time from a rather infamous Animal Control. She is in her usual spot right next to my elbow. I couldn't type on the computer without her.

Here is a quote from Bo that was in the 2003 AWC Whippet Annual:

"Bohem has two meanings, it refers partly to my first name and means Bo's place (or home) in Swedish, but it also means "bohemian" which fit my lifestyle fairly well when the prefix was first registerd 40 years ago. I also liked it because it is short and easy to spell in any language, although not easy to pronounce. (bo he:hm).

I've got to tell you, it is so nice to come on the blog and find actual comments about Vivi. I hope the local searchers/volunteers have beautiful weather while doing their "stuff". I'm thinking of you all...

Bo - My suspicion is the smell of this fisherman and his bait may have attracted her somewhat. Also, why don't you let everyone know what kind of sandwich that was. Maybe that also attracted Vivi. Did she like this food before possibly from Rick and Jill?

Has anyone mentioned the string around her neck recently? Hope it is gone.

Rebecca, don't apologize for being human! :) We ALL make mistakes (the ones that say they don't are LYING). :)

Thanks, Lois. I was just *so* excited about having thought I'd found something that could help, then disappointed to realize I was on the wrong track. I wonder if a talented person could build a trap that would be more enticing. Am very happy to read about the positive developments. Thanks to those who continue to work so hard on Vivi's behalf. Easter and Passover blessings to all.

Thanks Sharon for letting me know. I was just wondering what her name ment , I actually went back to the website that I got it from and I just wrote it wrong ! I guess she does take her name literally !!! Little Gypsy come on now , it's time to go home... Happy Easter.

BO,
I WAS ABLE TO LOCATE A TRAP 20"W X 28"T X 72"LONG. IF YOU'RE INTERESTED I CAN FAX YOU A PICTURE AND ALSO THE TOLL FREE NUMBER.HOPE THIS HELPS.

Live Trap for Feral Hogs and other large animals
48 in. Wide X 37 in. Tall X 96 in. Long(Item # 840873)

Would someone who has Bo's address or phone please forward the previous two posts information to Bo or even Honi, as he doesn't read this blog (mostly thankfully) but has specifically requested this information. The sooner he gets it the better.

You guys never fail. Thanks for that research. It's almost like raising $4000 in minutes. Or having to be told to stop calling and faxing the numbers we were told to call and fax the previous hour. I think this group relates to Vivi's tenaciousness.

According to Bo's recent update he asked for info to go thru this web site so that's the reason I didn't email the info to him about the trap on his email.Let me know if you think I should.

I wonder if that means to email Denise? You might try that and CC Honi....roxiethedoxie@aol.com
See if that works. Seems important enough that we should make sure they get this information. Put "large traps found" or something like that in the subject line.

I emailed to Denise. I think Honi prefers not to get Email.

Maggi has found the biggest trap so far.
I think Bo is looking for something even bigger,
but I hope he gets this info on the trap that is for Feral Hogs 48x96x37 TALL.

This could possibly be covered with branches, leaves etc. to make it look like a den.

Looking at some of the traps it just still seems like a crate. I'm sure their actually bigger than they appear on here

They are both bigger than the ones they had found so far so I would hope they will get the information on both soon and choose one or both ...

I like Linda ideal about covering it with branches over the top. Vivi hopefully wouldn't know what she is walking into

Does anyone know how to get in touch with those men that caught that dog in that big trap and all they wanted was a case of beer. I don't think they live to far from NY. I kinda sounded like that was a BIG trap.

Kathleen, You asked all the questions I was going to ask. Fine minds think alike :-). I don't know about whippets but my springer loves fish and now that fishing season has started could that be what will draw Vivi out? Maybe the guy was eating a tuna sandwich (or liverwurst)? :-)

I think the ground crew need to get out their fishing gear and caps and go sit by the water. And take a picture cause I want to see that at the party :-)

My son was just here and mentioned camoflaging a very big trap with grasses/weeds/branches from Vivi's home in Ca! Familiar smells and a sandwich of her choice might do the trick!

Apparently from the sightings we are hearing about now, she is showing her little self during the day.

It makes sense she would be drawn to the man fishing, he was probably an easy-going, laid back kinda guy!

Maybe Vivi will finally be back to normal and go to Rick.

Ten to one that guy with the sandwich was sitting down and didn't pose a threat to her.

Linda, I hope your right!
Rick should be in NY fairly soon, right?
I'm thinking good thoughts for a rescue!
I've been thinking good thoughts for soooo long, I amaze myself..heh

The pond must mean she has plenty of water to drink. Someone said she looked beautiful, maybe she is bathing in the pond too!
After all, this isn't our ordinary run of the mill Whippet....this is VIVI!

Bo, here is a link to a dog's crate that is more than sufficient for vivi's size and doesn't look like a trap at all but more like a play house. I can rig it up to accommodate my one way pet door, something that Vivi is very familar with at home and comfortable with, although the pet door she uses at home is smaller than mine and it swings both ways. The crate is nice and roomy (40" by 40") and even has a protective roof covering and base to it. it folds up to less than 4" and only weighs 40 pounds. All in all with shipping included it goes for about $210 using the buyer's club membership, which I have. Something to consider anyway.

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=206365

That's true Linda..maybe she's really a springer disguised as a whippet :-)

My Springer eats anything including any raw vegetable, I don't recall him ever turning anything down, and spends 95% of his waking hours thinking about birds or anything that might possibly be a bird such as a butterfly or spot of light on the wall. (the ultimate birdbrain)

Donna,

That sounds like a great ideal. Did you send that to Bo.

Donna,
How would this Crate at sportsmansguide. com work as a trap? The size isn't bad, were you thinking someone could make a trap door?

Gail, I love all Springers, but I am not sure that some of mine would have been as good at "staying alive" as Vivi has done!

I am still in awe of the fact she was able to miss all the traffic!

Linda..mine would have ran up to the first person she saw and said "help me"..they're way to clingy to be out on their own. The traffic has me stumped to..someones definitely watching over her.

May Spirit guide Vivi at the right time to the right person this weekend for a SAFE capture. My candles are lit and will burn until they burn out only to have others lit.

To my very special postive friends Hi keep those candles burning Hi Marnie and Marty and Sharon from Mich so nice to come back to the blog and see your inspiring postings. Yes it is nice to have Vivi as the topic.

It's good to be back. I hope you and everyone else have a very nice Easter. We all have to say a prayer tomorrow to get our dogs home. Wonder when Rick is coming. Also wonder if Bo will tell us.

barbara Burdick wrote to Bo in the Apr.10 update about the burly guys who were able to successfully trap the lost poodle. if you google in Barclay/Lyca you can read the story and get info. I'm sure Bo is aware of how to do this and get info about the trap. I think I'll email it to Honi because I do think it's important.

Linda NH - I've already made the device I'm referring to. It's a one way pet door that can be set up in the doorway of a bigger building, without having to cut holes in anyone's doors, allowing that bigger building to act as a containment area for Vivi. The pet door has been used in several places so far but due to outside obstacles and cicumstances that had nothing to do with the pet door in particular, it had to be removed. When using something like this, it depends too upon the good nature of the owner to allow you to put it in their yard if they have a small shedded area that could be used for such a thing. Plus, of course, location is everything, especially the way Vivi does the circuit. So in this case, the pet door could easily be revised to fit into the doorway of this larger crate and the fact that it doesn't really appear to be a trap at all but a pet door that she's familiar with, would be more of an incentive for her to enter it, especially if she can see the food inside and know that nothing else is in there waiting for her. And once she gets in, she would be contained but won't feel as trapped as she would in one of the smaller ones. I also like the fact that this is portable and fairly light compared to the other traps, plus it folds up nicely.

Marty - No, I didn't send the crate idea or the link to Bo as of yet. He knows about my one way pet door already, but if I sent him a private email I doubt he would answer or even read it since he's been getting swamped with so many posts. The next best thing for the moment, is to hope that he reads it here since he asked for any ideas to be put on this site.

Sounds great, versatile and adaptable and inexpensive too. In half a day once again we have at least 3 solutions to a problem they hadn't been able to solve on their own. I don't quite get what Bo means by tell him these through this blog since I doubt he reads it. I guess he is getting too much email and has someone checking for him? I hope.

Today in our newspaper there was a story about a bear in the Cherokee National Park that very unfortunately killed a young girl. They showed a photo in the paper of a "culvert" trap that they were going to use to try to trap the bear. It looked very big. I'm seeing in some previous messages here some traps that look possibly even bigger, but I just had to mention this. I have no idea how to contact anyone about this - this park is in the mountains of North Carolina, but maybe other closer state parks have such traps they could loan out... For anyone who wants to see this story it was by Associated Press in today's news.

Still praying here in Ohio, and hugging my two boy Whippets, Denim & Charlie!

Amy

Karen - I would think that Bo would probably just read this particular blog heading for any ideas that he might possibly want to put to use. It would most likely be the next best thing to sorting out his email for the answers he wants at the moment.

Donna Quinn,
Maybe you could send the email to someone on the blog you know talks to Bo...One of the volunteers perhaps. I think someone said Honi didn't like emails so I don't know who it would be. I hope he reads this blog, but its getting long.lol Your idea sounds like a good one!

Why am I getting double posts today? Arghhhhhhh...

MaryL - Thanks, I think it's a good idea too. The only ones I really talk to are Rosa and Tina. I've already told them about the crate and I've sent Rosa the link in an email, but Rosa hardly ever reads her emails these days since they're always out on the road looking for Vivi or checking out another siting or picking up more posters. They're always on the go.

Bo does read e-mail sent to him, I sent him something a week ago and he responded right away. If you put something in the subject line to catch his eye ("giant hog traps 36" tall) I bet he will read it immediately. :)

I think when he said "let me know through this website" he was referrring to the awc2006 site where his updates are usually posted first, before they come to this blog.

If you need his e-mail address, let me know...it was also posted on this blog a week or two ago, so you can find the thread.

Liz - I would appreciate it if you would send me Bo's email address. I'll try sending him the link and the idea and see what happens. Thanks.. .

Hi everyone - Hope you have a happy holiday.

Thanks Gail for putting us in that "great minds" category. Personally mine feels fried here lately. I have a feeling it was that fish smell which did attract Vivi. My Tinkerbell is absolutely NUTS over any fish. Captain D's is her favorite dinner for Mommy to purchase.

I got a good laugh today. I had a lot of Caesar salad with spinach leaves left from lunch. Tinkerbell ate every spinach leaf and loved it. She loves all veggies, fruit, meat, Popsicles, ice cream, you name it. The girl just loves food like her Mommy!

My favorite fun thing to do is fish at my former in-laws' stock pond (they call and invite me all the time and we have so much fun). With the right season, I always have the wild geese coming up to visit with me, and sometimes the horse next door comes to the fence to visit as well. Fishing is so relaxing that it just lures people and animals alike!

Siri, in reference to your info about houses where you live earlier. Houses are cheap in Memphis. My three bedroom, two baths, family room, laundry room, dining room and kitchen (built in 1998 new) costs about $95,000-$100,000 now. My older son and wife moved back from Henderson (near Vegas) and were renting a home the size of mine. I wondered why they did not buy, then he told me it would have cost about $350,000 there (one like my home). Wish I could move my home to Vegas and make that profit (hee, hee).

Hi Donna,
Thanks for the explanation...now I understand! Sounds like a good plan! I have a feeling Bo has someone reading this mail for him and forwarding the ones that may be of any help.

I sure hope we have some more good news tomorrow about Vivi...like she has decided to let some lucky person be 5 grand richer and she will go home for Easter!
Have a good day everyone. What a pleasure to chat with all of you....

FAWN AND BLACK 4YRS OLD MISSING SINCE 3/3/06..ANY INFO PLEASE CALL 347 432 2329 THERE IS A HUGE REWARD FOR HIS SAFE RETURN....FAMILY IS DEVASTATED...ANY HELP PLEASE WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED...

Well everyone, been gone all day and just cathcing up. Glad to see the positive news about Vivi. Too bad those dogs came up and scared Vivi away - sounds like this fisherman could have had a chance to befriend her and (maybe) capture her if he'd have had the time. I wonder if he knew who she was at the time - or if, again, it was afterwards that he found out. I'm sure it's right that she was not threatened by him. He was just sitting there minding his business and fishing. Maybe Rick better try some fishing while he's out there. C'mon Vivi - the Easter Bunny is waiting! Happy Easter everyone - Terrie

Donna - I sent you his address, you should have it....

Liz - ok, I sent Bo an email. Hopefully he'll answer back. Thanks again.

Kathleen-I answered you on the previous post. Check your email. Betty Layne

Creator God,Alpha and Omega, Beginning and End of all Power, we come to You in hope. This week marked Your Passover covenant with the Jewish people, and began a week of miracles. Tonight we comemorate the reckless, and unconditional love of Your Son Jesus, who gave His own life so that death would have no power over those You call Your own. This evening has been filled with Light- the Light of the New Fire, the Pascal candle, and the full moon which calls us to celebrate these holy days. Feeling loved beyond words, we ask small miracles for Vivi,
Biggie, and Sniffles. Bring this trio we have grown to love back to their earthly families. Restore all the lost, and sick, with Your love and compassion.
Hold us close to You so we can be together in this world, and when it is our time, Call us to Your Home.
Send special blessings to "Vivi's angels", and all who dare to be Your compassionate earthly presense.
We praise You all powerful Father, and we acknowledge that YOU ARE IN CHARGE! Amen.
(For all Christians here, let me add our traditional greeting- "He is risen. Yes, He is risen indeed!")
Have a wonderful Holiday. I can't help but be expectant.

Happy Easter everyone! Bo answered my post this morning as follows:

"Thanks so much for offering to help with this suggestion. I’ll forward to Jil and Honi and discuss options with them. The final decision will be theirs, of course. A lot of different type traps have been suggested and Jil is probably the best person to determine what might work for Vivi.

All the best and thanks again.

Bo"

Happy Easter everyone God Bless you all and Special Blessings for Vivi, Biggy, Sniffles and Dante may your light guide them to good health, safety and Home.

See Vivi, Sniffles and Biggy safely captured surround them with Gods light that will lead them to the right moment with the right person.

May the miracle of healing surround Dante remove all illness from his body and surround him with the green light of healing

A happy and blessed Easter everyone! Here is hoping to see Vivi sitting in an Easter basket by the end of the day, with an Easter bonnet on her little head..God bless her and guide her to someone that wants to help her..God bless and look out for Biggie and Sniffles too, so that they may find their way home or to someone that will help them also.. Have a great Day everyone!!! Rosa from Mich.

VIVI!
Okay, enough is enough! I can't believe you actually nipped at my tail! Thank goodness I have turbo-boost or I'd have been history! Can you imagine how many disappointed boys and girls there would be if you had caught me? Geez... Lighten up girlfriend. I think it is time that you used your stealth abilities and found your buddies, Rick and Jil. If you need any help, let me know and I'll send Little Red Riding Hood your way. If you behave yourself, I'll put in some good words to Santa for you. I'm sure he'd be happy to drop some toys and treats for you back home...
The Easter Bunny

I hope everyone has a nice Easter today. I pray to God that ViVi goes up to someone that knows about her and that person is able to put a leash around her precious neck. I'm sure alot of people are going to be out today so hopefully someone will see her. Plan to go to the park and spend the day with family and friends and eat lots of food.

HAPPY EASTER

Well, will not be adopting Dezi the Chihuahua mix I mentioned. The lady found a home for him first with an elderly woman, at home all the time, that wanted a lap baby to love. Dezi had some age on him, so his owner felt there were a perfect map. The lady also has my name though in case things do not work out after the owner moves out of town. Hope Dezi will be very happy in his new home.

Hi Easter Bunny, thanks for posting. Hope you have a very good Easter. Terrie

For those who may not have heard, Molly the cat stuck in the wall of her owner's deli in New York since 4/1/06, was rescued by a miner (on 4/14/06 about 10:00pm) who had volunteered his time. She is doing well and eating sardines this Easter. It is now Vivi's turn. Happy Easter to everyone.

HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE!
HERES LOOKING AT YOU VIVI AND SNIFFLES AND BIGGIE!
IT'S TIME FOR YOU GUYS TO COME BACK TO YOUR PEOPLE!
LOVE ALL OF YOU!
