Leaping the barriers to weight loss

The Mayo Clinic has added a pretty cool feature to its online package on weight loss. This month's podcast is on the social, emotional and psychological barriers to weight loss.

The weight loss section also offers a wide range of articles and tools to use in your efforts, including a calorie calculator and a healthy weight pyramid tool.

Check out the site and see what you can find to support your weight-loss efforts.

Hi Amanda,

Thanks so much for offering this great blog. It's packed with wonderful information.

My mouth is watering with excitement over the fact that the Mayo Clinic is now recognizing that emotional factors play a key role in the ability to lose weight.

It's so exciting to see that the Medical profession is finally figuring out that there is a connection to our emotions and that dieting is not the answer.

You see, diets don’t work. It’s actually been proven that only 2-5% of people who lose weight dieting, are able to retain the weight loss for more than 5 years. That means that diets fail for 95-98% of the people who are relying on them for weight control. That’s because they don’t teach us how to handle the emotions that drive us to eat when we’re not hungry.

That's where I can lend a helping hand. I’m a Certified Weight Loss Coach and Double Master Practitioner of Neuro Linguistic Programmng and Ericksonian Hypnosis. I specialize in coaching women who are emotional eaters and teach them how to lose weight without dieting once and for all.

There really is an alternative to dieting and I'd like to tell you more about it.

Amanda, have you heard of a process called Intuitive Eating or IE? It’s a simple and natural non diet weight loss method that is based on retraining and reconditioning our bodies to cue into our hunger and satiety signals. Babies are natural intuitive eaters in that they know exactly when their tummies are full and they respond to those sensations of satisfaction by pushing mom’s breast or bottle away.

Intuitive Eating (IE) is also well known for its success in treating people with eating disorders. The whole idea behind it is to eliminate the deprivation factor that typically comes with dieting. That’s right. No plans, powders, gadgets or gizmos, just real honest to goodness food. No holds barred, no kidding. Pack your pantries and welcome back all the old no-nos, no food is forbidden anymore.

The basic principles of Intuitive Eating are fairly simple. Eat what you want, eat when you are hungry and stop before you get full.

By taking a permission based approach to eating, you eliminate the forbidden fruit syndrome and food loses its allure. That newfound freedom and ability to discriminate empowers women to trust themselves around food again. Rather than relying on diets, weight loss programs or doctors, this dietless approach to weight loss teaches us that we are not bottomless pits constantly seeking to tame the feast beast lurking inside of us.

You may have heard of some success stories credited to Intuitive Eating (IE) in the media, like Former American Idols’s Katharine MacPhee who recovered from her eating addiction in 2006 with the aid of using Intuitive Eating.

It's true that IE works but since it is a natural process it takes time. The most difficult part of it is learning when to stop eating because the process itself is singularly geared to eliminating the deprivation of dieting by being inclusive of all foods. It does not help the individual to deal with the emotional upsets that push them to overeat. That is where it falls short and why it takes so long to succeed using this approach to weight loss.

However combined with well respected, effective stress relief and relaxation strategies, Intuitive Eating takes on a whole new character.

Amanda, if you are interested I’d be happy to share with you what I’m cooking up for ladies who are ready to lose weight without dieting.
