smuggs.com, 800-419-4615
This mountain resort, nestled in Vermont’s Green Mountains, is 45 minutes west of Burlington, a six-hour drive from New York City.

This summer, it’s 2004 at Smugglers’ Notch, with the resort rolling rates back five years.

The action-packed, Family Fest Package for a family of four (which includes five nights’ accommodations in a one-bedroom condo) is $1,046 — down from $1,575 last year. The package includes guided hiking and garden tours, tennis camp, mystery shows, volleyball, and daily camps for kids ages 3 to 17.

At Idlewild, a book for every travel destination

David Del Vecchio owns Idlewild Books, an independent store that competes with the big chains. (Garett Sloane)

By Garett Sloane

John Dohrman sorts through a pile of guidebooks at a sitting area in the back of Idlewild Books.

He is planning an Eastern European tour this summer, and excitably holds up a pocket language book.

“I’m going to five countries and this has three of the languages in one book,” said Dohrman, 50.

Another traveler, Holly Greenfield, 29, spots the Croatia section. “Oh, there it is,” she says.

Idlewild, in the Flatiron District, is not organized by author or genre, but by place. More than 100 countries are represented with guidebooks, literature and nonfiction related to the destinations.

Buffalo: A summer art escape

BurchfieldPenney_1024.jpg
The one-year-old Burchfield Penney Art Center is a must-see in Buffalo.

By Jessie Pascoe
Special to amNewYork

Buffalo, once an industrial city, might not appear to be that arty. But recent developments, like the newly opened Burchfield Penney Art Center, are slowly changing people’s perception.

This summer, experience Buffalo’s artistic offerings outdoors at the city’s many festivals. They’re ideal places to shop for original art, and Buffalo’s summer art festivals also provide much-needed cardio after indulging in Western New York’s gluttonous delights.

Get Cultured
Allentown Art Festival
It just wouldn’t be summer in Buffalo without the annual Allentown Art Festival. Held in Allentown—a pseudo-East Village nabe—the AAF draws thousands of visitors to what is considered the largest and oldest art festival in the country. Expect to find everything from watercolor paintings to jewelry and pottery to stain-glass fixtures. June 13-14; allentownartfestival.org.

Flight attendant tips

FlightattendantGwenael%20TANGUY.jpg
Air France's Gwenael Tanguy had plenty of advice for long-haul flights.

We asked Gwenael Tanguy, a flight attendant with Air France, for her travel tips. Because no one knows travel better than those who do it for a living.

1) Any tips for enduring a long-haul flight?

First tip is to travel wearing comfortable clothes. Make sure you have at least one warm item of clothing with you as it can sometimes get cold in airplanes.

Second, bring a good book! And ,if you have one, a portable DVD player as you can never be sure what the in-flight entertainment is going to be like.

Why not also pack a toothbrush, hairbrush, facial toner, and deodorant? This will enable you to freshen up whenever you feel like it.

2) Is it really important to walk around? Why?

Yes, it is very important to walk around. Traveling in the same position for several hours is not good for your blood circulation and can cause DVT,or Deep Vein Thrombosis, which can be fatal.

So in between the meal services, don't hesitate to get up and stretch your legs.

If you don't feel like walking around or if you are stuck next to sleeping passengers and can't leave your seat you can always do a few simple exercises in your seat: ankle, wrist and neck rotations as well as leg rotations.

Some airlines have a "wellness" channel in their in-flight entertainment which takes you through a few simple exercises to do in your seat and others have examples in their in-flight magazine.

Slums and millionaires side-by-side in Mumbai

Laundry1_1024.jpg
Mumbai's Dhobi Ghat is an open-air laundry where many Mumbaikars send their clothes to be cleaned and dried.

By Lucy Cohen Blatter

Mumbai, like all of India, is a feast for the senses.

The intensely hot air is filled with the pungent smells of spicy foods and the sounds of constantly honking car horns.

The food is wonderfully flavorful and bright colors are everywhere — from the saris women wear to fruit sold on the side of the roads.

Formerly known as Bombay, Mumbai is India’s largest city and its financial capital.
So, extreme wealth and intense poverty are on display, side-by-side.

You can choose to dine at “It” restaurants, or dirt-cheap street vendors, sip cosmos at rooftop bars or buy cheap (and very good) Kingfisher beers at a dingy corner stores, shop at crowded street bazaars or peruse designer boutiques.

TO SEE:

Marine Drive
This boulevard is nicknamed “The Queen’s Necklace” because at night it is lit up to resemble a strand of pearls. It’s a great place for a sunset stroll and is home to some of Mumbai’s most upscale hotels.

Dhobi Ghat
There are rows upon rows of clotheslines in this open-air laundry, where the majority of Mumbaikars send their clothes. They are soaked in soapy water, thrashed on flogging stones, tossed into vats of starch and hung out to dry.

Dharavi slums
Made famous by “Slumdog Millionaire,” Dharavi is Asia’s largest slum. Amongst the incomprehensible squalor, residents run industries (like pottery, embroidery and recycling). To gain access, visitors must enter with a guide. Reality Tours and Travel (realitytoursandtravel.com) offers a two-and-a-half hour tour through Dharavi that starts at 400 rupees (about $10).

Peace, art and food: A cost-cutting sojourn to Montreal

JeanTalonMarket_1024.jpg
Jean-Talon Market is a paradise for foodies in Montreal.

By Laura Neilson
Special to amNewYork

This year, Montreal celebrates the 40th anniversary of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's famous bed-in (from May 26-June 2), which took place at the city's Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth Hotel. To honor the event, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is hosting a free exhibition entitled "Imagine: The Peace Ballad of John and Yoko," through June 21. The show features an impressive collection of photographs and memorabilia chronicling the couple's protest, as well as their artwork and campaigns for peace.

The exhibition alone is well worth a visit to the Canadian city, but the strength of the US dollar (1.2 Canadian dollars to the US dollar), combined with many other affordable offerings, will make a weekend stay in the North American French capital feel like a jetlag-free trip to Europe—for a fraction of the price.

SATURDAY
Despite the bed-in theme, you won't want to laze about this weekend. Get an early start and make your way over to the Museum of Fine Arts (mmfa.qu.ca) to avoid the inevitable crowds.

New Yorkers have strong opinions about everything—burgers included. That said, head a few blocks north from the museum to M:Bgr (2025 Drummond St., mbrgr.com) where you can customize your own burger for lunch. Choose from three different types of beef, chicken breast, tuna or a veggie patty. Try a side of the classic Montrealais dish known as poutine: French fries smothered in gravy and cheese curds.

For more art, make your way to the Museum of Contemporary Art (macm.org), where $8 CAD gets you in to see the works of renowned artists like Louise Bourgeois, Richard Serra, Nan Goldin and Sam Taylor-Wood. Or eschew admission fees and stroll through the nearby galleries to check out Montreal's growing art scene.

Obama relaxes Cuba travel ban, stirring hope and fear

The Che Guevara memorial across the Plaza de la Revolucion in Havana. Cuban Americans can now make unlimited visits to the island nation.

By Jason Fink and Rolando Pujol

The Obama administration's announcement Monday that it will permit unlimited travel and money transfers to Cuba by American relatives raised hopes among those seeking repeal of the half-century-old embargo, but hardened the resolve of longtime opponents of the Communist nation.

“It's a sign that the status quo is being rethought and revamped,” said Kevin Casas-Zamora, a fellow at the Brookings Institute and the former vice president of Costa Rica. “The noises I hear in Washington suggest that if anything a lot of people would like this to proceed much further.”

The White House unveiled one of the most significant policy shifts toward Cuba since the travel and trade ban was imposed following Communist leader Fidel Castro's seizure of power in 1959.

Las Vegas is a gambler’s paradise (or worst nightmare, depending on luck at the tables and the slots). But if the affordable flights and hotel rooms deals now available entice you more than the games, here are 10 ways to escape the most sinful side of Sin City.

Get in the game.
Check out a minor league baseball game at Cashman Field — about a 25-minute drive from the center of the Strip. With beer and peanuts in hand, watch the Las Vegas 51s battle MiLB teams from the Pacific Coast League. The season runs from April to September, and tickets cost as little as $9.

Martha Stewart talks travel

85557784.jpg

This month’s Martha Stewart Living magazine features an all-new quarterly travel column. amNewYork asked Stewart about her travel experiences:

Is there a place you've always wanted to visit but haven't gotten to yet?
A: There are many places I'd like to travel to, such as the North and South Pole. I would love to see the polar bear migration and Glacier National Park.

What kind of trips do you like best?

A: For me, travel is all about learning new things and finding fresh sources of inspiration. My favorite trips are those on which I discover delicious new dishes and beautiful treasures, become acquainted with little-known customs and traditions, and encounter interesting people, especially artisans, artists and cooks who are passionate about what they do.

What do you like to take home from your travels?
A: When traveling I enjoy exploring local nurseries, gardens and antiques shops. I also love to sample the local cuisine-not just in restaurants that may be well known in the area but in small establishments that may be far off the beaten track. I often find things that inspire my work if it be for our magazines, books or our merchandise lines.

Next week, New Yorkers will mark St. Patrick’s Day by cramming into overcrowded pubs and attempting to recreate the Dublin experience. But the real thing is so much better.

Home to both Guinness and Jameson, the capital city’s deeply rooted pub culture makes it the perfect backdrop for a suds-soaked celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, but it’s fun all year round.

When Iceland’s three main banks failed in October, it sent the country’s currency, the Icelandic krona, into a spectacular freefall, in which it lost nearly half its value. Once considered prohibitively expensive, the four-star hotels, flashy nightclubs and world class restaurants in the capital city Reykjavik are now half-off. Just a five-hour flight from New York, taking advantage of the Reykjavik has never been easier—or more affordable.

You come here for the water. Not the beach, necessarily, although there are those. This chain of islands extends some 113 miles south of Miami, all linked together by one of the country’s most remarkable roads — the Overseas Highway — surrounded, naturally, by water. To make the drive takes about four hours if you do it all in one go.

But if you do, you miss the sense of a place removed from anywhere else. This is a place where nature takes its own course: where mangrove swamps and coral reef rule; where manatee and dolphin thrive; where the clear blue of the Florida straits defines the territory.

Traveling in ’09? Suggestions and predictions

0210Cabopic_1024.jpg

By Lucy Cohen Blatter

According to Yahoo’s travel expert, Pablo O’Brien, vacation booking is down, and the average getaway is about one day shorter than last year. But people are indeed still searching for deals — possibly more need of a vacation than ever before.
He offered amNewYork readers his suggestions and predictions:

FINDING A BARGAIN
1) Go touristy. O’Brien recommended traveling to destinations that are popular with tourists, such as Hawaii and Mexico. Spots like Puerto Vallarta, Cancun and Cabo San Lucas are most likely to lower their rates. “Those places have a lot of hotels they need to fill,” he said.

2) Package deals help you save big. “Hotels are reluctant to lower their room rates too significantly, but they’re more flexible with package deals with airlines, so look for those,” he said.

3) It’s all about the hotels.
Across the board, it seems as though airfares aren’t down significantly, but hotel prices are, in some cases drastically. “In Vegas, for example, midweek prices at top hotels are in the double digits per night.” Look for midweek dates for the best deals.

Viva la recession: Paris on a budget

By Monique Stringfellow

Paris is associated with many things — haute couture, fine cuisine, architectural opulence —but a good deal is not often one of them. Suprisingly, though, Parisians are actually very sensible spenders. So, Paris on a budget is less about cutting corners than doing the city like a Parisian.

What to do
Go to Notre Dame, but skip the overcrowded climb to the top of the tower (for 7.50 euros) and opt instead for a (free!) wander within the main area of the world’s most famous Gothic Cathedral.

Climb the steps of Montmartre’s Sacré Coeur for an unbeatable (and free!) view.

Weather permitting, follow Hemingway’s example and transform the city into a moveable feast. Picnics are the best way to combine sightseeing, people watching (a favorite Parisian pastime) and eating (another fave pastime.) without the high cost of a café meal.

Despite fewer travelers, holiday will still cause headaches

By Jason Fink

Don’t be fooled into thinking that traveling this week will be easier than in years past because fewer people are expected to trek to family get-togethers.

“There will be some havoc,” said Robert Sinclair, Jr., a spokesman for AAA New York. “To the average motorist it will be as bad as it has ever been.”

The AAA predicts that there will be a 1.4 percent decline nationwide in people traveling more than 50 miles this Thanksgiving week compared to last year.

Similarly, air travel is expected to drop by about 10 percent this year, said David Castelveter, a spokesman for industry group, Air Transport Association. However, with airlines cutting flights by roughly the same amount, the planes themselves will be as crowded as ever.

“Thanksgiving is the busiest travel period of the year,” Castelveter said.

Travelers indulge in airport luxury

By Marlene Naanes and Jason Fink

As the holiday travel season ramps up, your vacation could start while you're waiting in the terminal.

Local airports increasingly are offering more pampering, including spa treatments, beds, showers, and even food delivery.

“Ten years ago they never had this,” said Tacie Saltonstall, who was at Kennedy Airport today after missing a connecting flight.

“We screwed up the flight this morning and I was like, ‘yes, we get to spa it,’” she said.

It’s likely that with the busiest — and often times most stressful — travel week of the year upon us, many other travelers will also indulge at the airport.

Between Wednesday and Sunday, Kennedy is expected to see 629,000 passengers and LaGuardia 281,000, according to the Port Authority. With the average flight delay for departures this year at Kennedy reaching an hour and six minutes, and an hour and three minutes at LaGuardia, travelers have plenty of time for a facial or a comfortable nap.

“It’s a destination,” Laurie Malen, 48, of Manhattan, said of the new JetBlue terminal at Kennedy. “It’s full service.”

The newly opened JetBlue terminal is among the most striking examples of the trend towards turning airports — once dreary way stations brightened by the occasional newsstand or McDonald’s — into combination mini malls and lounges.

There, passengers can dine on sushi or tapas or opt for a massage. There is also a play area for children, a pharmacy and free Wi-Fi. Other terminals at Kennedy also have their own high-end offerings, such as stores selling diamonds, Rolexes and Ferragamo shoes.

Koziar’s Christmas Village has been spreading holiday cheer in Bernville, Pa. for more than 60 years, and this year it’s bigger than ever. Gaze at more than half a million twinkling lights, tour themed buildings like Santa’s workshop, and see this year’s new outdoor train display. Bernville is about 2 1/2 hours by car from Manhattan. The nearest Amtrak station is in Lancaster, about 30 miles away. Hours through Jan. 4, 2009 are Monday to Friday, 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 5 to 9:30 p.m. $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, $5 for ages 6 to 12. www.koziarschristmasvillage.com.
