Entourage 5/1: The essence of 'Entourage'

Everyone likes to call "Entourage" the male version of "Sex & the City." There is much truth in that.
Most people in tune with "Entourage" also understand that this show is deeply entrenched in the ideals of long-term male friendship. How guys can have real friendships with each other and how that means you can say anything to each other and it's all good.
That was the deal this past weekend and three of my friends I've known since 1993 and I sat at several blackjack tables for many hours. Just nonstop banter -- some of-the-moment and some old-school bombs -- and rooting for and/or against each other to win some money.
And the same thing was on display in the Season 5 premiere of "Entourage."
Once you put aside all the sweet pieces of patoot on screen and forget about the hot cars, clothes and houses, that's the essence of "Entourage" -- and what makes this show so successful among males 16 to 60.
This is shown perfectly in the penultimate scene of the premiere. Vince is still trying to figure out his way back after the "Medellin" nightmare and just got played by "Danger Beach" director Carl Ertz. The guys are back in their home and the back-and-forth dialogue is as natural as if it were you and your friends in some little shack of an apartment.
They take little potshots at each other for the "Medellin" flop and Vince's makeup (I still say he looked like Horatio Sanz trying out for a role in the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" video). Given the severity of this career-threatening bomb, they're still able to laugh at it, make fun of each other for it and still know they've all got each other's backs no matter what.
That's what true friendship is. That's what true "Entourage" is.

Entourage is by far the best show on TV. I wish they would do hour episodes and 24 of them.
I thought it was a very good episode, but I wish Vince would have stayed on the beach for another episode or two. I think we didn't see the real desperation his character supposedly went through. They should have dragged the conflict part out a little more.
I would love to read this blog, but I hope you dont give too much away. I dont like to look at previews...I like to be surprised.
Entourage is getting ready to jump the shark. Bottom line.
Personal theory: Those really caught up in it still are looking past a slow moving plot and a lot of recurring jokes. Maybe it's the whole regular guys living the good life -- something we all would love to do -- that everyone goes nuts over.
After the big premiere we waited so long for, I was left with a resounding "huh??"
The writers need to stop sugarcoating everything. It's getting really, really boring.
Richie...

Me too...Plot could be much better.
Adam, I dont think its ready to JTS just yet. But I agree that it could. I dont see why we have to wait so long for a new season. That is what killed the Sopranos. That, and the fact that they tried to prove they didn't need violence in almost every episdode.
Outside of Jeremy Piven, I never heard of any of these actors before Entourage. There's no reason they cant hustle up a season. Its such a hot show, they let too much time pass. And people dont come back that would.
The writers' strike is what delayed Season 5. they usually begin writing in September but they couldn't do anything until the strike ended, which is what slowed everything down for Entourage and every other show.
Those shows that returned were already in production so it was easier to return.
Entourage didnt get going until much later and rushing it for a June start would have compromised the show. Expect Season 6 to return in its normal summer slot, though I havent confirmed that just yet.
Im kind of torn if he should have stayed on the beach longer or not. It was rather rushed to get him back, not alot of development there; but Im also glad they are ready to move on and tackle things.
I like how it looks like Vince will lose out on his part to this summers big bomb --- Speed Racer.
He just needs to figure a way to do The Ramones project.
Didn't they do a 24 episode season once? I just thought the beach seen was pretty short. I woulda liked an I'm not ready speech back from Vince, and then he returns on episode 3 or 4 ready to kick butt.
Just heard the Entourage Season premiere was down 27% from last season. Entourage was probably hurt by the year long absence from HBO. Last Season, they were only off the air for a few weeks in between. They ended Season 3B in April, if I remember correctly, and Season 4 started in June. It is really unfair to compare the two premieres. Also, how many people now either TIVO or Record their show, like our own Mark admitted? (tee hee) How do they measure that number into it? If they want to really measure Entourage's success, they need to measure hits on Entourage fan blogs. I doubt they will find many "successful" shows that have as many loyal followers.
Sorry, just venting!
