America pulls a 'Medellin' on Season 5 premiere
The Season 5 premiere of "Entourage" drew 1.6 million viewers according to Nielsen ratings, down 27 percent from last season.
Ouch. Not good. I prefer to think of it has more than 80 million people not being smart enough to know what's good on television.
Let's blame it all on the MTV VMAs, the start of NFL football and the proliferation of DVRs and TiVos.
If I can dig up the "live plus" ratings next week, we're likely to see a much higher number.
What are "live plus" ratings? In December 2005, Nield started distributing its ratings information in three versions: live, the traditional way television is watched; live plus 24 hours (counts how many people watched a show on DVR playback within a day of recording it) and live plus seven days, counting playback within a week of recording.

Yikes- I posted this to the wrong blog by accident originally:
I'm right there with you. I definitely think Entourage and the VMAs appeal to the same demographics. People probably stayed with the VMAs, because they were live, and TIVO'd their Entourage. Plus, Entourage is on over and over all week. How about if they count all the times people watch the replays on the multiple HBOs.

Here's my comment from this morning:
Posted by lainiek | September 10, 2008 08:34 Just heard the Entourage Season premiere was down 27% from last season. Entourage was probably hurt by the year long absence from HBO. Last Season, they were only off the air for a few weeks in between. They ended Season 3B in April, if I remember correctly, and Season 4 started in June. It is really unfair to compare the two premieres. Also, how many people now either TIVO or Record their show, like our own Mark admitted? (tee hee) How do they measure that number into it? If they want to really measure Entourage's success, they need to measure hits on Entourage fan blogs. I doubt they will find many "successful" shows that have as many loyal followers.
Sorry, just venting!

We are so on the same page with this one!
I'm the one guy that doesn't fall into the "the demographics for the VMAs and Entourage are the same." I'd rather of killed myself than even watch the one minute of the VMAs that I acctually watched. However I agree that there were people who DVRed (or TiVoed Entourage and watched it later) the show and watched VMAs or NFL instead. If Entourage would be on for the next HUNDRED years I would continue watching it. It's one fo the greatest shows ever. The numbers will get better next week. I thought the 1st Episod was good but not a 10 out of 10, but also it looks like it will be a 10 of 10 season.
I agree. To me football is the biggest threat. I was at the sunday night game in Indianapolis and therefore DVR'd the show. I think because the show is such a big hit with male audiences that Football will be the biggest threat to the show and HBO will never have a Fall entourage again.
Good point, guys. I bet you Sunday night Football will hurt Entourage. Entourage should be back for Season 6 in June 2009, so there won't be that same conflict. Plus, it is just an easy breezy show, it belongs in Summertime!
wow. that sucks. lets just hope it gets better.
I predict this will be a tough season for the show. Amount of viewers for the premiere were down by a ton. These episode's are not very good. Especially this weeks. It was awful. I think the show might get pulled either after this season or the 6th.
It might also have something to do with the economy. I know I for one, cancelled HBO (at the wife's insistance) and now have to download the show as a Bit Torrent and watch on TV. I'm sure i'm not the only one!
