Boomer TV: 'Captain Kangaroo's' Birthday

Bob Keeshan, who played Captain Kangaroo for 29 years (1955-84), would have been 81 today.

The entertainer, a Long Island resident for most of his life, died on Jan. 23, 2004.

I still have one burning question, which maybe somebody out there can answer: Did Captain Kangaroo have a first name?

Meanwhile, here's the classic opener from the show, a melody that will undoubtedly continue playing in your head all day.

Keeshan's"Captain Kangaroo'wasn't really an entertainer

or an educator..

Inasmuch as he was an educational matrix.

He was able to have educational concepts grow and

develop before the audiences.

Mr.Keeshan did have a repatory company of

actors and singers..who could entertain in a fashion.

That was funny and tuneful and engaging but

never boring, patornizing or provided anything that

was not appropriate for children.

It was a joy to spend a weekday or a weekend

morning with this show and I'm sorry that are no

kids tv shows on the air today..that can present

such a concept for our kids now.
