Boomer TV: Noontime Nostalgia -- Are You Ready for Some Rain?
To get you ready for the massive rainfall we're about to experience this weekend, here's a clip of B.J. Thomas singing (actually lip-syncing) his No. 1 hit from 1970, "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" (from "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," but you knew that).
I wish I knew on which TV show this was first shown -- dig the faux-psychedelic, proto-"Teletubbies" backdrop and those umbrella-wielding dancers, who no doubt were rejected from "The Lawrence Welk Show" for not being hip enough.

I think this was from "The Ed Sullivan Show". Those set decorators loved the silly backdrops.
Yep it is from the Ed Sullivan show.
The really big showman himself walks in at the end of the clip.
In its later years they tried to put the musical acts in some funky-looking sets - remember this is when a lot of people got their first color television sets almost 40 years ago once they got cheap ... and all the broadcast networks [god, all 3 of them plus WNET and those independents like WN[E]W, WPIX and [W}WOR].
The most-seen example of the Sullivan show set design is the doors behind The Doors when they made their appearance ... and I've seen some really smooth stuff when Duke Ellington was a guest.
Don't forget even The Beatles sets, back in glorious monochrome days.
