DIANE WERTS: Steve Irwin’s living legacy
The Crocodile Hunter’s daughter launches her own show this summer. “Bindi: The Jungle Girl” is set to debut Saturday, June 9 at 5 p.m. as a weekly series on the Discovery Kids digital cable network, the channel announced today. (Press release here.)
Steve Irwin was shooting the show with his 8-year-old daughter Bindi last year before he died in a freak ocean accident with a stingray. Bindi and mom Terri Irwin continued the project with colleagues at their Australia Zoo, hoping to inspire other kids toward wildlife conservation.
Mom and dad will both be seen in the series, visiting Bindi’s “treehouse” headquarters from which she encounters a variety of animals. The night before the series premiere, June 8, Animal Planet runs Bindi’s special “My Daddy the Croc Hunter,” filled with reminiscences about her paternal hero. It also features footage from their last crocodile adventure, in August 2006.
