The Difference Between High School Musical and Grease

16181a.jpg

Click here for my review of HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL at Paper Mill Playhouse, which I wrote for Theatermania.com.

In spite of all its similarities to GREASE, HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL actually preaches the opposite message. Whereas Sandy Dumbrowski had to change her goody-girl clothes and attitude in order to win over bad boy Danny Zuko, basketball jock and hunk Troy Bolton and brainiac Gabriella Montez are instead encouraged to stay true to themselves and challenge the status quo. Even if it portrays a perfect high school environment that most theater geeks never actually experienced, High School Musical means well and perhaps encourages a sense of community and togetherness among today’s students.
