Will Avenue Q Close Now?
Rumors currently indicate that AVENUE Q is likely to be the next in the long line of musicals closing on Broadway due to the recession. And while this seems understandable, let's think about something else entirely. One of the final lines in the musical's ingenious finale, "For Now," goes: "George Bush is only for now!"
I often wondered what would happen if AVENUE Q outlasted the Bush presidency. Would they change the lyric to whomever is the new president? I don't think "Obama is only for now" would receive the same round of applause... Perhaps this is just another sign that it's time for this truly wonderful, hilarious show to throw in the towel.
I will never forget being in the audience at the 2004 Tony Awards, watching AVENUE Q beat WICKED. What a great moment for musical theater history.
