Ashley Alexandra Dupre's time in spotlight running out?

ashley alexandra dupre

For Ashley Alexandra Dupre, the high-priced escort known as “Kristen” caught up in the prostitution scandal that brought down Gov. Eliot Spitzer, the clock on converting her 15 minutes of fame/infamy into a music career has started running. But she’s probably used to that.

After an initial wave of interest in her music, especially the single “What We Want,” led to radio airplay and online sales on Thursday, curiosity started to give way to indifference or even anger yesterday. “The jury is in and the response has been extremely negative,” said Sharon Dastur, program director at New York’s influential pop station Z100, which began playing “What We Want” on Thursday, but removed it from its playlist yesterday. “The reaction was almost 95 percent negative.”

Dastur said the station played the song because of its importance to pop culture, not because of its musical value. When the station was flooded with responses ranging fom that song “makes me want to scratch my eyes out” to “I’d rather listen to the Paris Hilton album in its entirety than hear that song again,” Dastur said she knew it was time to pull it after only six plays.

On the online retailer Amie Street, where Dupre’s songs “What We Want” and “Move Ya Body” are for sale, purchases dropped dramatically yesterday. Neither song was in the Top 200 Friday, though the massive sales on Thursday led both songs to the top two spots for the week and the month.

New York DJ Jay Smooth, who remixed Dupre’s “What We Want” with Snoop Dogg’s hit “Sexual Eruption,” saw his combination crack YouTube’s most watched videos yesterday, which led to mixed feelings. “It feels strange to get the most attention for my most frivolous work,” said Smooth, a WBAI hip-hop DJ who first posted the remix on his influential illdoctrine.com blog. “My hope is that people will see this and check out my work on more substantial topics... or see that it showcases the creativity in hip-hop.”

Smooth said yesterday that he was torn about keeping the mash-up online, but he did want to try to do something positive for Dupre. "I felt bad for the girl and all of the negative attention that was going to be heaped on her," he said.

Dastur said Dupre’s future in music doesn’t seem too bright, though “Nowadays, you never really know.”

Let the remixing begin: Ashley Alexandra Dupree (a.k.a. "Kristen") vs. Snoop Dogg

You knew it wouldn't take long. The first remix of Ashley Alexandra Dupre's "What We Want" is online and it's a pretty good one from New York DJ Jay Smooth over at illdoctrine.com. He mashes it up with Snoop Dogg's "Sexual Eruption," which is kind of fitting, I guess, and offers the blueprint to opportunistic producers everywhere on how to turn Dupre (a.k.a. "Kristen" a.k.a. "The Spitzer Girl") into some sort of star.

Ashley Alexandra Dupre (a.k.a. Kristen) sings, but not about Spitzer

ashley alexandra dupre a.k.a. kristen Ashley Alexandra Dupre (a.k.a. Kristen a.k.a. The High-Priced Escort Who Brought Down Gov. Spitzer) is no dummy. This morning, as her musical collaborators made the rounds of the morning talk shows telling people that she was trying to be a singer and not, you know, that other thing, her MySpace page came down and she added a song for sale to her Amie Street page. Why give it away when you can get paid, right?

Kristen Dupre
Ashley Alexandra Dupre (a.k.a. Kristen) photos
Now "Move Ya Body," which debuted this morning, isn't as good as "What We Want," which everyone trolling her MySpace page yesterday got to hear. It's got a Britney Spears-ish "I'm a Slave 4 U" feel, but it sounds like it's not quite finished. Her vocals aren't fully processed, meaning some aren't in tune or end weirdly as she sings things like "Sex, money, drugs is what I'm all about, step your game up so you can see for yourself."

"What We Want" isn't great, but with a little polishing it could totally pass for a single from Spears or a lesser Pussycat Doll. It's a midtempo dance number built on a spacey, sorta-Timbaland synth riff and a mantra of "Can you handle me?"

Someone has to be working on rushing this song out, given the sudden interest in Ashley's other career. It's already going for a full-price 98 cents at Amie Street, which makes songs available for free initially and then uses popularity to determine the songs' price, meaning both Dupre's songs have sold enough copies today to garner top-dollar. Seeing as Dupre's still hiding out in her Flatiron District apartment, her album, titled "Unspoken Words," is doing the talking.

UPDATE: Her MySpace page is back.

Journey to release first album with new Filipino singer

Journey

"Revelation," the debut disc from Journey featuring new singer Arnel Pineda, is set for a June 3 release exclusively through Wal-Mart stores.

The three-disc package features two CDs that include 11 re-recorded classics with Steve Perry sound-alike Pineda on vocals and 11 new songs, plus a live concert DVD.

Guitarist Neal Schon discovered Pineda, who hails from Quezon City in the Philippines, last year when he spotted the singer on YouTube performing songs with his Journey cover band The Zoo.

A U.S. tour is tentatively set for July.

Here's a video, purportedly of an unnamed new song being played at the Planet Hollywood Theatre in Las Vegas on March 8. In it, you can hear Pineda thank his fellow "pinoys" -- a nickname Filipinos sometimes use for themselves. Also listen for an announcement that the concert is being filmed for the "Revelation" live disc:

Alanis to drop first new album in four years

Alanis Morissette has announced a May 20 release for "Flavors of Entanglement," on the Maverick/Reprise label. It will be her first album of new, original studio material since 2004's "So-Called Chaos."

Morissette has been performing new tracks like "Torch" and "Moratorium" during her current tour opening for Matchbox Twenty, hinting at a dreamier, darker, more electronic-based sound.

That may be due to the album's producer, Guy Sigsworth, a British musician (he's one-half of the duo Frou Frou) who's worked with indie pop sirens such as Jem, Bebel Gilberto and Imogen Heap. Though Sigsworth helmed the track "Everytime" for Britney Spears's album "In the Zone," the Morissette disc marks his biggest notch yet as a mainstream producer.

Among the new tracks, according to a press release from Maverick: "Underneath," inspired by Mahatma Ghandi; "Versions of Violence;" "Citizen of the Planet;" "Tapes;" "In Praise of the Vulnerable Man;" "Not as We;" the alarmingly-titled "Giggling Again for No Good Reason;" and the closing "Incomplete."

Here is some typically grainy fan footage -- good sound, though -- from a couple of recent performances. The first is "Torch," from a performance in Oklahoma City. The second is "Moratorium" at an unidentified venue.

Nine Inch Nails releases "Ghosts" for free (partly)

Trent Reznor, Nine Inch NailsIn a new twist to online record-releasing, Nine Inch Nails posted part of "Ghosts I-IV" on its Website for free last night, but is charging for the complete package.

Costs for the complete album -- in either digital or physical form -- range from $5 to $300.

Downloads of "Ghosts," released at 6:00 p.m. PST last night, caused the band's Website "to slow to a crawl," according to a posting by NIN singer Trent Reznor. "We've been adding more servers to accommodate the unexpected demand and we expect to be running smoothly in the next few hours."

"Ghosts" is an experimental album featuring a range of eclectic collaborators, including the guitarist Adrian Belew, producer Alan Moulder, NIN keyboardist Alessandro Cortini and NIN graphic designer Rob Sheridan, among others. The tracks are a series of "spontaneous, impulsive soundtracks to daydreams with no agenda," created within a "self-imposed 10-week time limit."

The move marks another foray from a major artist into the realm of independent music-making and releasing without the aid of a record label. Like Radiohead, which left EMI Records and offered its new album "In Rainbows" for free over the Web, Reznor recently left his label, TVT. (That label subsequently filed for bankruptcy.) And also like Radiohead, Reznor is offering a tiered pricing structure for his work.

Fans can download the nine tracks of "Ghosts I," along with a 40-page PDF file and goodies such as wallpapers and icons, for free. All 36 tracks of "Ghosts I-IV," are available for $5. Physical editions include a $10 two-disc set, a $75 version with a DVD and hardcover book, and a $300 "Ultra-Deluxe Limited Edition Package," signed and numbered by Reznor, that adds four vinyl discs. There's also a $39 vinyl-only package to be released April 8.

"More volumes of Ghosts are likely to appear in the future," according to a press release.

Beyonce, Grohl will attend Grammys

BeyonceAs the writer's strike continues, Grammy organizers yesterday promised the show will go on, releasing a short -- very short -- list of those who have pledged to attend.

They are Beyonce; her father, Mathew Knowles of Music World Entertainment; two other Knowles-related acts, Trinitee 5:7 and Solange; John Silva of SAM Music Management; and Foo Fighters, who had previously promised to attend and will be part of a "My Grammy Moment" segment that will give unknown musicians a chance to perform with the band.

John Legend, who is scheduled to perform a promotional concert on a Grammy-branded jet plane on Feb. 7, a few days before the Feb. 10 Grammy broadcast, was not on the list.

From The Jam tours U.S.

Black Sabbath without Ozzy Osbourne? The Who without Roger Daltrey? Led Zeppelin without Robert Plant? How about The Jam without Paul Weller?

That would be From The Jam, a combo made up of founding Jam members Bruce Foxton (bass) and Rick Buckler (drums) plus session musicians Dave Moore (keyboards) and Russell Hastings on lead vocals and guitar.

The band has done well enough on its November-December U.K. tour that it's now launching a 13-date tour of theaters in the U.S. with a stop Feb. 9 at Blender Theatre at Gramercy.

How will classic Jam tracks like "That's Entertainment," "This is the Modern World" and "Town Called Malice" sound without Paul Weller? Here's one answer:

Dan Fogelberg dead at 56

Dan FogelbergThe soft-rock troubadour Dan Fogelberg, known for his mellifluous voice and poignant, sometimes weighty lyrics, died Sunday of prostate cancer. He was 56.

A message on Fogelberg's Website said the singer died at 6 a.m. Sunday at his home in Maine with his wife Jean at his side.

Fogelberg was one of the leading lights of the '70s singer-songwriter scene, though he was never quite a part of it. Living in California in the early '70s, he made guest appearances on albums by Jackson Browne, Randy Newman and Roger McGuinn. But his distaste for the music industry led him to leave the West Coast in 1974 and settle in Boulder, Colo., far from the entertainment world.

Nevertheless, Fogelberg racked up a string of million-selling albums, including "Souvenirs" (1974) produced by Joe Walsh, "Captured Angel" (1975), "Nether Lands" (1977), "Twin Sons of Different Mothers" (1978), collaborating with the jazz flutist Tim Weisberg and "Phoenix" (1979), which charted at No. 3.

In 1981, as punk and new-wave were pushing singer-songwriters aside, Fogelberg ignored industry trends and released a double-album song cycle called "The Innocent Age." The album generated four Top Twenty hits: "Hard to Say," "Leader of the Band," about his father, a bandleader, "Run for the Roses" and "Same Old Lang Syne."

Fogelberg continued to record and tour until 2004 when he was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. In a message on his Website that year, he thanked fans for their supportive emails.

"It is truly overwhelming and humbling to realize how many lives my music has touched so deeply all these years," Fogelberg wrote. "Each one of you who have taken the time and effort to reach out to Jean and I have helped immeasurably to uplift our spirits and keep us looking strongly forward during some very rough moments. I thank you from the very depths of my heart."

Anthrax hires Long Island dude as singer

Dan NelsonAnthrax has hired Dan Nelson, formerly of Unbroken and other Long Island-New York City bands, as its new lead vocalist.

Nelson, a casual acquaintance of Anthrax guitarist Rob Caggiano, replaces Joey Belladonna, who reunited with the band for a successful reunion tour last year.

"I was actually looking for a band," Nelson said in a press release from Anthrax. "Long Island, NY is a pretty dead scene. I was in Unbroken, and through that I met Rob a couple years ago. I had gone through some stuff on a personal side where I took time off from music. When I got back to the scene, I couldn't find a band, so I contacted Rob through MySpace and offered my services."

Nelson continued, "We sent music back and forth, got together, and jammed for 10 hours straight. After 10 hours, he said, 'I think you'd be right for Anthrax.'"

The band, with Nelson, is currently writing new material.

Ike Turner dead at 76

Ike TurnerIke Turner, known as much for his soulful duets with his wife, Tina Turner, as he was for having abused her, died in San Diego yesterday. He was 76.

"Tina is aware that Ike passed away earlier today," her spokeswoman, Michele Schweitzer, told The Associated Press. "She has not had any contact with him in 35 years. No further comment will be made."

Turner, often credited with having made the first rock album, 1951's "Rocket 88," was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991 along with Tina. He released his last solo album, "Risin' With The Blues," in 2006 and won a Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Album.

Green Day drains Hot Tubs site

Green Day Foxboro Hot Tubs albumSo much for the free download of Green Day's "secret" new album.

A few days ago, word leaked that Green Day had formed a band called Foxboro Hot Tubs and was offering a free 6-song EP called "Stop Drop and Roll!!!" through the Website FoxboroHotTubs.com, but that window of opportunity appears to have closed.

The site now displays only the band's name above a ticking clock, a possible hint that the album may be released again in some form in the future.

Green Day is staying silent on the matter, much as the band did back in 2003 when it refused to admit that it had released an album called "Money Money 2030" disguised as a new-wave band called Network.

Foxboro Hot Tubs sounds nothing like Green Day -- the "band" has a 1960s garage-rock vibe, and the cover of its "album" has a vintage design modeled on the colorful sleeves and movie posters of the go-go era. The lead vocals sound similar, though not identical, to Billie Joe Armstrong's, and the overall feel of the music recalls some of the early rock touches on Green Day's "American Idiot" album.

Listen to a few tracks from Foxoboro Hot Tubs at MySpace here.

Led Zeppelin: Here we go again

Led ZeppelinLed Zeppelin is somewhat definitely not ruling out perhaps considering a possible reunion, maybe, according to the British press.

Citing an anonymous source, The Sun reports that the band members discussed playing three shows at Madison Square Garden in 2008 soon after performing at London's O2 Arena Monday night as a part of a tribute to the late Ahmet Ertegun, founder of Atlantic Records.

Singer Robert Plant talked with guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist-keyboardist John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham (son of original drummer John, who died in 1980) about the success of the O2 show while drinking “hot mugs of tea and coffee,” according to The Sun's source.

“Then the talk went to, ‘What next? Was this it or would there be something else?’ One of the guys started talking about their three concerts at the Garden. There was a consensus of, ‘Why not?’ It is one of the best live music venues in the world. I have no doubt after their reaction backstage that they will be there next year playing to a sell-out crowd.”

The story is already being reprinted by Websites like the New Musical Express and blogs such as Blabbermouth.net (and this one, come to think of it), reigniting rumors of a reunion tour even after Led Zeppelin stated firmly that it wouldn't come to pass.

RIAA sends out 11th wave of legal letters

Heedless of negative coverage in the press and rising resentment among music fans, The Recording Industry Association of America announced late last week that it had sent colleges another round of letters threatening to sue students who have downloaded music illegally.

The 396 letters were sent to 22 university administrators, encouraging them to identify the users of IP addresses that the RIAA believes are responsible for digital piracy. It's a tactic the RIAA has used in the past to pressure schools into fingering students and, perhaps, encourage the kids to cough up some settlement money before a lawsuit is filed.

According to Billboard.com, this latest, 11th batch of letters brings the total number of letters sent by the RIAA to 4,553.

RIAA letter“For those who ignore these great legal options and ignore years of warnings, we will continue to bring lawsuits,” Jonathan Lamy, Senior Vice President, Communications at the RIAA said in a statement. “It’s not our first choice, but it’s a necessary part of the equation."

Alleged pirates who want to settle a pending case are directed to the RIAA Website www.p2plawsuits.com.

Here's the breakdown of colleges that received pre-litigation settlement letters, according to the RIAA:

Auburn University (13 letters), Brandeis University (12), Georgia Institute of Technology (16), Gustavus Adolphus College (36), Indiana State University (18), Iowa State University (13), Ithaca College (15), Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (16), Louisiana Tech University (15), Mississippi State University (15), Morehead State University (17), Rochester Institute of Technology (12), University of Arizona (14), University of California, Davis (14), University of California, San Diego (17), University of California, Santa Cruz (24), University of Dayton (16), University of Massachusetts at Amherst (30), University of Rochester (15), University of Southern California (33), University of Washington (16), and Western Kentucky University (19).

Check out what appears to be an older version of the settlement letter here.

Journey hires Filipino lead singer

Arnel Pineda, the singer for a rock band based in Quezon City in the Philippines, has become the new lead vocalist for Journey.

Guitarist Neal Schon discovered Pineda by watching a video of him and his band, The Zoo, on YouTube.

“I was frustrated about not having a singer,” Schon said in a statement released yesterday, “so I went on YouTube for a couple of days and just sat on it for hours. I was starting to think I was never going to find anybody.  But then I found The Zoo and I watched a bunch of different video clips that they had posted.  After watching the videos over and over again, I had to walk away from the computer and let what I heard sink in because it sounded too good to be true."

Pineda is Journey's third lead singer in the past two years. He replaces Jeff Scott Soto, who in turn had replaced Steve Augeri. The band is working on a new album to be released in spring or summer of next year.

Here's The Zoo covering "Don't Stop Believin'."

Bonnaroo: No Zep, no Metallica

Led Zeppelin 1968After days of giddy celebration amongst fans of Led Zeppelin and Metallica, it turns out those bands will not be playing the Bonnaroo festival after all.

"The rumors that are out there about the Bonnaroo 2008 headliners are inaccurate," according to a statement from Superfly Presents and AC Entertainment, the promoters of the Manchester, Tenn.-based festival. "We'll be announcing the confirmed lineup toward the end of January/beginning of February."

The statement, released to Billboard.com, also throws cold water on expectations that Led Zeppelin might reunite for a tour. For now, the band's only planned show is Dec. 10 in London as part of a tribute to the late Ahmet Ertegun, founder of Atlantic Records.

The Bonnaroo rumours were initially fueled by an unidentified email published Dec. 1 in the newsletter of Bob Lefsetz, a well-known music writer.

Pimp C remembered

Pimp CRick Martin, manager of Pimp C, this morning released a statement about the rapper, who was found dead yesterday in the Mondrian Hotel in West Hollywood, Calif. Martin, who identified the body of Pimp C, born Chad Butler, wrote in part:

"I was so very proud of Chad and the growth he has shown since his release from prison; as an artist and business man and as a person. As one half of the legendary Texas group UGK, Chad was finally seeing the results of the years of love and labor that he and Bun B have put in over the years, culminating in the tremendous success of their album, Underground Kingz. Chad was set to soar with not only a new solo deal on Jive Records, but a lucrative publishing deal, a new satellite radio show, several group projects and a national cologne endorsement. Chad had everything to live for, making his unexpected passing a travesty."

UGK's Pimp C found dead

UGK feat. OutKast, "International Players Anthem (I Choose You)"

UGK rapper Pimp C was found dead in his bed by police in Los Angeles this morning, according to a spokeswoman for the rapper. No cause of death has been released. Pimp C, whose real name was Chad Butler, was 33.

Manager Rick Martin asked in a statement that everyone please respect his family and those close to him at this time and refrain from rumors and innuendo. A full statement is expected later this afternoon.

The Houston-based UGK, which also features rapper Bun B, was in the midst of a comeback this year. Its double album "UGK" (Jive) debuted at No. 1 in August and the hit "International Players Anthem" was one of the year's standout singles. He was previously best known for appearing on Jay-Z's hit "Big Pimpin'."

Neurosonic fires back

NeurosonicNeurosonic, the Canadian punk band, is defending its anti-Ashlee Simpson song "So Many People," in a press release sent out this morning.

The song generated a bit of press recently when singer Jason Darr claimed during a Manhattan concert that Simpson's boyfriend, Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy, had issued a "cease and desist" order against the band. Wentz denied it on his blog, resulting in even more press.

Now comes this statement from Darr:

"Anyone silly enough to believe I was serious about the comment I made at my [Neurosonic] NYC Knitting Factory performance has no sense of humor. Before we played our song, ‘So Many People’ I joked that Pete Wentz had taken out a cease and desist for the song because my lyrics are all about Ashlee Simpson’s Saturday Night Live debacle as well as celebrity culture. The song is not new… I wrote it 3 years ago…I wrote the music and had the initial lyrics right after the Saturday Night Live debacle in October 2004, and completed the song right after Ashlee was given the billboard award [December 2004]."

He adds:

"The song is tongue-in-cheek and it was mostly meant to blow off steam about a subject that is laughable at best…It is not meant to be malicious. I do mean every word of the song though, so you can take it or leave it. It’s only rock ‘n roll."

Kanye vs. Evel: It's all good

Remember when Evel Knievel sued Kanye West over his video for "Touch The Sky," in which West played a jumpsuited stuntman called "Evel Kanyevel?" The beef was over trademark infringement, with the 69-year-old Robert Craig Knievel taking umbrage at West's "vulgar and offensive" video.

"That video that Kanye West put out is the most worthless piece of crap I've ever seen in my life," Knievel told the Associated Press at the time.

But a statement from West's label today says the two parties have "amicably resolved and dismissed the case." And to prove it, West went to visit Knievel at his home in Tampa, Fla. for a photo that's almost as funny as that famous one of Elvis Presley shaking hands with Richard Nixon.

Check out Knievel throwing a sign:

Hawthorne Heights guitarist dies

Casey CalvertCasey Calvert, the 25-year-old guitarist for the emo-punk group Hawthorne Heights, was found unconscious in his tour bus Saturday afternoon before the band was scheduled to play a show in Washington, D.C. He was pronounced dead after authorities were called to the scene around 2:30 p.m.

The cause of death has not been determined. "At this time, we're not exactly sure what happened," the band members wrote in a posting on their Website. "Just last night he was joking around with everyone before he went to bed."

According to MTV.com, police are still awaiting autopsy results, though there is speculation that Calvert's death might have been related to his acute asthma.
