File this under: Wha?
So Jermaine Dupri, through Island Def Jam, has launched a new label with TAG. Yes, the body spray people. Why?
"To provide new artists with a chance of a lifetime" and "to make history in hip-hop," Dupri says in a statement, adding that artists on TAG Records will receive ten times the typical marketing support. Um, OK.
This partnership will help the Procter & Gamble subsidiary break into the urban market and it will give new artists a bigger marketing budget. But if this label was really for serious stars, wouldn't the label happily give them more marketing money knowing it would generate more sales and profits for them without giving the body-spray people a cut?
I guess we'll find out when the label announces its first signing next month.
