Things are getting a bit lopsided on “American Idol,” so it’s no wonder producers are looking to make some changes.
For
Neil Diamond Week, like most weeks,
David Cook approached it with the most contemporary and the most artistic arrangements and performances, while
David Archuleta performed in a way that would likely land him the most votes. Which of them will end up winning this season is a matter of a different debate.
The problem for the show is that it’s basically a foregone conclusion that one of them will win, meaning most of America can tune out for the next three weeks.
Brooke, Syesha and
Jason simply don’t seem to have the tools to compete with the Davids, lacking either the smarts or the skills to avoid being outclassed.
In previous years, any one of them could have been serious contenders. Brooke’s “I Am I Said” was touching. Syesha’s “Thank the Lord for the Nighttime” was entertaining. And both were arguably better than Archuleta’s safe performances, but nowhere near as crafty and effective as Cook’s.
