Wake up!
This song has been going through my head for a week now. We miss you Soul Coughing.

During my convalescence over the weekend, I bedded down with the Adult Swim cartoon The Venture Bros. The show, presented in 15 minute slices of absurdity, is the story of a wanna-be super-scientist, his two lame-o adventurer sons and his sickly muscled bodyguard (voiced by Patrick Warburton of every cartoon ever. Oh, and "Seinfeld"). Someone on staff is an insane Bowie fan.
Check out the first minute and change of "Ghosts of the Sargasso." (Well, you can watch the whole thing, but the first chunk is all that's relevant here.)
And so, in honor of the Action Man, I give you "Ashes to Ashes"
"Ashes to Ashes/funk to funky" is quite possibly my favorite lyric ever.

After the jump, Bowie takes on Iggy Pop and Klaus Nomi...
I've been in a Bob Mould mood these past few days, and he's perfect rainy-day music, so, "See a Little Light."
I really of enjoy the stripped down sound of solo Bob. There's always a time for the harder-edged sounds of Husker Du and Sugar, but Bob's solo output is like the sonic equivalent of changing out of wet socks and sipping hot cocoa (spiked with rum, of course — I don't want to get too unicorns and kitty cats on you here). It's just the right mix of dreary and comforting, is what I mean.

So I've been hearing this song everywhere (partly because I made it my ring tone). I love it, but what kick-started my Gary Numan revival was a British show called "The Mighty Boosh". Vince Noir, one of the main characters, is obsessed with Numan and anything glam.
Check it: In this clip, zookeepers Vince and Howard debate musical tastes.

Here, have some Pogues:

I was never really a big Dylan fan, but he's popped up a few times in my life this weekend (as a concept, not the man himself). Even this morning, on my way to work, I was reading Nick Hornby's "Housekeeping vs. the Dirt" — a collection of his "Stuff I've Been Reading" columns from The Believer magazine — he mentions Dylan's autobiography, which Hornby makes sound really compelling. I think I'll have to pick it up.
But I think this is my new favorite song:

I've talked about this band before, but they really are one of my secret favorites. Meaning, every few weeks, I discover them and play their album non-stop for a few days, and then forget about them again.
So this weekend I rediscovered them when they came up in rotation on my iPod while I was walking around in Astoria. They are a great band to take a walk to; I like to pretend I'm in a foreign country while I listen.
Anyway, here's their video for "Festival."
Their new album, "Tio Bitar," is due out May 1.

There was no one song that stood out this weekend, but on my way to work this morning, the Beastie Boys' "Fight For Your Right" came up in the shuffle on my iPod, which made me nostalgic for my radio listening days and Malibu Sue's Flashback Lunch.
So here's a little Flashback Snack.
