They'll say SLEEEP!

I'll put this upfront: The following post is gonna be pretty disjointed, but bear with me.

So lately I've been going through this phase where after midnight, I think to myself, "Sleep is overrated," but in the morning, I think exactly the opposite. So I had a vague idea to do a blog entry about songs about sleep. But I looked up the following video and got distracted.

Barenaked Ladies, "Who Needs Sleep"

The band has a whole series of videos featuring Ed playing in the bathroom!

I used to love these guys. They're a really fun live show, even if they won't let you throw Kraft Dinner at them anymore. Following in the footsteps of They Might Be Giants, they recently released a kids' album, because they're all old and have kids now. You can here it here.

The other sleepytime songs I thought of were ...

"Golden Slumbers"

(Ben Folds' cover from "I Am Sam." When I originally saw some special on this movie, I thought it was a joke. It helped that it came on in the time slot that had formerly belonged to "Twitch City," a totally bizarre post-KITH Canadian sitcom.)

And ....

The Beatles, "I'm Only Sleeping"

This became one of my favorite Beatles songs ever after I bought the British version of "Revolver." My dad, of course, had the American record, because he lived in America in 1966 (and now). (For those of you who aren't dorks: The track sequencing on a few of the Beatles' American releases differed from that on the British ones because Capitol Records played mix and match with "Help!," "Rubber Soul" and "Revolver" to create "Beatles Yesterday and Today" so they could release 4 albums instead of three. Google "Butcher Cover" if you want to know more.)

So, um, there's that.

Out there

• Kanye's video for "Homecoming" -- the song he did with Coldplay's Chris Martin -- is out. Idolator hates it.

• Over on Gawker, they discuss the ubiquitous reggaeton IO digital cable ads. There's one in Spanish as well. I kind of love these ads ...

Best Week Ever question's Morrissey's habit of releasing a "Best of" album every two years.

• The Onion's Noel Murray continues his record collection examination in his Popless column. I don't know what it is, but I really enjoy his writing. Also, he's dead on about the press kit thing. I don't even read them any more.

• Oh no! Kim Deal and Stephen Malkmus, two of my musical heroes, are in a feud, kinda.

NKOTB reunite. For reals!

Whatever happened to those snakes on that plane?

I heard this song last night while I was out. Remember when we were all excited for "Snakes on a Plane"? Like, no other movies would have to be made — in fact the writers' strike wouldn't even matter — because "SOAP" was gonna be it? And then it totally sucked (and all the old media critics blamed it on the internets)?

And this song (It's "Bring It! (Snakes on a Plane)," by Cobra Starship) kind of sucks, too. But it reminds me of the heady days before "SoaP" was released and we were all thrilling in the anticipation of the most necessary film ever.

Ambivalently, despite multi and various rumors, it appears that there won't be a sequel. Sam Jackson's proclamation at the 2006 MTV Movie Awards ("No movie shall triumph over 'Snakes on a Plane.' Unless I happen to feel like making a movie called 'More Motherfucking Snakes on More Motherfucking Planes'.") is not to be.

So kiss those snakes goodbye.

Kanye's good at Connect 4

kanye.jpg

Kanye West blogs about beating Beyonce at Connect 4. Miss BT is also very good at Connect 4 (it's not a game I previously thought one could be good at, but watching her play, I have to admit that there's some skill involved), so I propose a showdown. I, of course, will be on hand to moderate.

This is for BT

Last night, while running around this fair city of ours, my friends and I broke out into this song. It was magical. We were drunk.

Anyway, another friend of ours expressed her dislike of this song. She's wrong and I just wanted to publicly say so.
