British Invasion

So the hip kids already know about British songstress Lily Allen, whose debut album "Alright, Still" hits the States Feb. 6. If you've missed the buzz, check out "LDN". Awesome song, awesome video.

Also slated to make the jump across the pond is jazzy soul singer Amy Winehouse. She's already gotten hated on by Pitchfork, but we have to respectfully disagree. She does a spot-on tribute to the R&B-soul greats of the '60s (she even samples "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" on "Tears Dry on Their Own"), but updates the sound with delightfully profane and irreverant lyrics. On "Rehab" — the first single off of her album "Back to Black" (which is rumored to hit the U.S. in March) — she crows, "They try to make me go to rehab/but I said "No, no, no." The song is based on her very public (in the UK) struggles with alcohol.

The Wainrights have a lot of friends

So we haven't had much of a winter, and it's not begining to look a lot like Christmas, but Rufus and Martha Wainwright brought some holiday cheer to their Carnegie Hall concert last Wednesday. They also brought a ton of their super talented family and friends, including Joseph Gordon Levitt, Laurie Anderson, Jimmy Fallon, Antony and Lou Reed.
Highlights after the jump.

Meet Emily Hulme

Emily Hulme loves all music -- with a special fondness for the down and dirty New York sound -- and she wants you to as well. She likes The Strokes, The Shins, and other bands that start with 'S'. Live or recorded, she's sifting through the noise to bring you the very best of what's around. (She's also a recovering DMB fan.)
